Ligaen Round 18: Svendborg beats Bakken in the most crucial game of the week - Dec 15, 2012

An exciting game between Top Four teams was played in Aarhus. First ranked Svendborg faced second-best Bakken. Guests from Svendborg (14-1) defeated host Bakken (12-3) 79-75. Bakken trailed by 11 points at halftime and as many as 12 after three quarters before a 25-17 last quarter charge cut the deficit to 75-79 at the end of the game. The best player for the winners was U.S. Virgin Islands power forward Gregory Washington (208-84, college: Hofstra) who had a double-double by scoring 22 points and 10 rebounds. The former international guard Adama Darboe (190-86) chipped in 18 points and 7 assists. At the other side the best for losing team was the former international center Chris Christoffersen (218-79, college: Oregon) who recorded a double-double by scoring 18 points, 12 rebounds and 5 assists. Svendborg maintains first position with 14-1 record. Defending champion Bakken keeps the second place with three games lost. Svendborg are looking forward to face SISU (#4) in Copenhagen in the next round. Bakken will play on the road against Aalborg and is hoping to prove to their fans that this time they can win.
Another exciting game was played in Copenhagen between seventh ranked Randers and 4th ranked SISU where Randers (6-10) won against SISU (10-5) on the road 83-76. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of SISU. It was a good game for American forward Bonell Colas (205-82, college: Florida) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 25 points and 16 rebounds. Christian Nielsen contributed with 27 points and 6 rebounds for the winners. American forward Damon Smith (200-88, college: Mary) replied with 27 points for SISU. Randers have a solid three-game winning streak. They moved-up to sixth place. SISU at the other side keeps the fourth position with five games lost. Randers will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. SISU will play on the road against the league's leader Svendborg (#1) and hopes to get back on the winning track.
The game in Naestved was also quite interesting. Third ranked Horsens IC (12-4) played at the court of 5th ranked Naestved (9-7). Horsens IC defeated Naestved 79-67 on Saturday. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Naestved. Darko Jukic had a double-double by scoring 24 points and 13 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners. The best for the losing side was Caleb Walker with a double-double by scoring 11 points and 11 rebounds. Naestved's coach Geoff Kotila rotated eleven players in this game, but that didn't help. Horsens IC have a solid three-game winning streak. They maintain third position with 12-4 record having just one points less than leader Svendborg. Loser Naestved keeps the fifth place with seven games lost. Horsens IC will meet Aarhus BC (#7) on the road in the next round. Naestved will play against Vaerlose and hope to secure a win.
The game with biggest result difference took place in Naestved. Local Naestved (9-7) beat 6th ranked Aarhus BC (5-10) 80-62. Naestved have a solid three-game winning streak. They maintain fifth position with 9-7 record. Aarhus BC lost third consecutive game. They dropped to the seventh place with ten games lost. Naestved's next round opponent will be Vaerlose (#9) at home. Aarhus BC will play against Horsens IC in Horsens.

In the last two games of round 18 Horsholm was defeated by Randers in a road game 85-80. Horsens IC beat Vaerlose at home 89-77.



Randers - Horsholm 85-80

The game between closely ranked teams ended with 8th ranked Horsholm's (4-11) road loss to seventh ranked Randers (6-10) 80-85. The hosts were tied after three quarters but managed to speed up in last quarter eventually winning the game. Randers made 23-of-24 charity shots (95.8 percent) during the game. Randers outrebounded Horsholm 36-24 including 27 on the defensive glass. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 21 assists. 25 personal fouls committed by Horsholm helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. American forward Bonell Colas (205-82, college: Florida) notched a double-double by scoring 25 points and 15 rebounds (on 12-of-14 shooting from the field) to lead the effort and Spanish point guard Miguel Ortega (188-91) supported him with 15 points and 10 assists. Even 19 points by Hungarian forward Attila Kovacs (203-85) did not help to save the game for Horsholm. The former international forward Casper Hesseldal (198-85, college: Dickinson St., agency: Dynamics Global Management) added 10 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Horsholm's coach tried various players' combinations and tested in total eleven players, but that didn't help to avoid defeat in this game. Randers have a solid three-game winning streak. They moved-up to sixth place. Horsholm at the other side keeps the eighth position with 11 games lost. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest.

It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Naestved. The game was mostly controlled by Horsens IC. Naestved managed to win fourth quarter 18-13. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Horsens IC forced 20 Naestved turnovers. International guard Darko Jukic (198-90) had a double-double by scoring 24 points and 13 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners and American guard Skyler Bowlin (190-89, college: Missouri So., agency: Warren Sports International) chipped in 17 points and 6 assists during the contest. The best for the losing side was American guard Caleb Walker (193-89, college: Nebraska) with a double-double by scoring 11 points and 11 rebounds and his fellow American import power forward Joe Benjamin (200-83, college: W.Virginia St.) scored 14 points and 7 rebounds (on 6-of-7 shooting from the field). Five Horsens IC and four Naestved players scored in double figures. Naestved's coach Geoff Kotila rotated eleven players in this game, but that didn't help. No shocking result in a game when third ranked Horsens IC (12-4) defeated at home 9th ranked Vaerlose (3-12) 89-77. The game without a history. Horsens IC led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They dominated down low during the game scoring 64 of its points in the paint compared to Vaerlose's 36. International guard Darko Jukic (198-90) notched a double-double by scoring 23 points, 13 rebounds and 5 assists to lead the effort and American center Keane Thomann (211-89, college: Missouri So.) supported him with 29 points (on 12-of-15 shooting from the field). Even 23 points and 8 rebounds by American forward Justin Baker (203-89, college: Utah Valley) did not help to save the game for Vaerlose. His fellow American import guard Richard Delk (193-86, college: Troy) added 17 points. Horsens IC have a solid three-game winning streak. Horsholm 79ers (Ligaen) strengthened their roster with addition of American guard Kameron Bundy (188-79kg, agency: Duran International). Bundy just graduated from Drury (NCAA2).
