135 games have been played in the Danish Basketball Ligaen and the winner of the Regular Season has been found. Svendborg Rabbits with 22 wins in 27 games came up with the best record in the Danish Ligaen and that earns them a home-court advantage in the playoffs.
Last seasons runner-up Svendborg Rabbits have finished either as number 1 or number 2 in the standings since the 3rd place they earned in the 2008-2009 season. Led by Head Coach Craig Pedersen who looks like an early favorite to reclaim the Coach of the Year Award for the 4th time in his career, Svendborg Rabbits can look back at a successful regular season.
It came as a rather big surprise that Svendborg managed to finish 1st in the standings as they lost Chanan Colman (191-G-84, college: Chipola) one of the best Danish basketball players and MVP of Ligaen 2012 to Maccabi Bazan Haifa. But another Danish guard, the 26 year old Adama Darboe (190-G-86), has really stepped up his game averaging 18.7 ppg, 4.3 rpg and 5.9 apg. Another player worthy of a mention on the Svendborg team is the American Forward Donald Rutherford (199-F/C-87, college: Catawba). His 23.1 ppg and 9.5 rpg are 2nd best in the Ligaen. Rutherford converted on 59.5 % of his 2 point attempts and looks like one of the frontrunners in the MVP voting.
In the first round of the playoffs Svendborg will play against Vaerlose BBK. Vaerlose BBK finishes the season with 20 wins and 17 losses which gives them an 8th spot. Vaerlose is a team based on a very strong group of Danish players born in 1994 supported by the American guard Richard Delk (193-G-86, college: Troy) and the American forward Justin Baker (203-F-89, college: Utah Valley) as the go-to guys of the team. If the team is to have a chance against Svendborg in the playoffs they will have to rely not only on Delk and Baker but also on a solid production from young promising players like Peter Moeller (190-PG-94) and Jacob Jensen (211-C-94).
At 2nd place in the standings, Bakken Bears finishes with 21 wins. Many expected Bakken to finish 1st in the standings but a turbulent season with the firing of the rather successful coach Philip Dejworek and the departure of Chad Tomko (180-PG-89, college: NC-Wilmington) and Chris Nielsen (192-G/F-85) made the season more challenging than expected. Bakken is probably the deepest team in the Ligaen and have several Danish players on the bench that could easily be starters on other teams. The team is led by Danish forward Nicolai Iversen (205-F/C-80, college: San Jose City JC) averaging 15.5 ppg, 6.9 rpg and 2.5 apg in only 28 minutes per game. 218 cm tall Danish center Chris Christoffersen (218-C-79, college: Oregon) has also been a big part of Bakkens success. Playing less than 20 minutes per game Chris Christoffersen still manages to put up 10 ppg, 7.3 rpg and 1.1 bpg.
Playing against Bakken Bears in the first round of the playoffs is Horsholm 79ers. Horsholm managed to win 11 games this season which secured them a 7th place. Horsholm has been led by American guard Brenton Butler (190-G-87, college: Fordham) but has also seen a surprisingly strong contribution from Hungarian forward Attila Kovacs (203-F-85) who has shot 43 % from the 3 point line and scored 14.6 ppg. Hoersholm has struggled with injuries throughout the season and many things have to go Hoersholms way if they are to win against Bakken. With young players like Zarko Jukic (200-F-93) Anders Hansen (190-SG-94) and Rasmus Hansen (203-PF-95) the future looks bright though.
Finishing at 3rd place in the Ligaen is Horsens IC. The team has been a big surprise this season winning 19 games. 22-year old Dane Darko Jukic (198-G-90) has been one of the biggest surprises of the year. Last season he averaged 13.5 ppg for 9th ranked Aabyhoj while this season he has been putting up an amazing 21.7 ppg to go along with 9.1 rpg, 3.1 apg, 2.0 spg and 1.2 bpg. Strong play by the American guard Skyler Bowlin (190-G-89, college: Missouri So.) and American Center Keane Thomann (211-C-89, college: Missouri So.) has also been a big help for a team that relies heavily upon the production from the players mentioned.
6th ranked Team FOG Naestved will be the team to play against Horsens IC. Team FOG Naestved has probably been one of the biggest disappointments of the season winning 13 games compared to 17 last season. They won a bronze medal last season but haven't managed to live up to the expectations in the regular season. Expectations were big for Norwegian guard Stian Mjos (182-PG-89) who joined the team in June but he did not manage to live up to the expectations and left during the season. Drew Crowell (205-F-88, college: Wofford) also left the team during the season and it has also just been announced that the Lithuanian forward Nerijus Brasas (200-F-85) has left the team. The American guard Caleb Walker (193-G-89, college: Nebraska) has been the teams best player scoring 19.2 ppg while American forward Quinton Doggett (203-F, college: Southern) has been the teams best rebounder with 8.3 rpg. Team FOG Naestved will also have to hope for a strong contribution from import players Alex Murphy (185-PG-88) and Joseph Benjamin (201-F).
Finishing at 4th place is SISU Copenhagen. SISU Copenhagen has had a strong season with 17 wins which is 5 more than last season. The team has been led by experienced American-Danish guard Mickey Dennis. At the age of 34 he managed to put up 17.9 ppg, 5.3 rpg and 4.2 apg. Danish point guard Mikael Nielsen has also been a big part of the teams success averaging 13.6 ppg and leading the team with 5.3 apg. SISU Copenhagens American players Damon Smith and Zach Mortiz may not have been the best players in league looking at stats alone but have both had solid seasons.
Playing against SISU Copenhagen in the first round of the playoffs is the biggest surprise of the 2012-2013 season: Randers Cimbria. The team won promotion from the Danish 1st division last season. The main reason for the success of Randers has been the very strong play from experienced American forward/center Bonell Colas (205-F-82, college: Florida). The 30 year old former MVP of the Danish Ligaen was the top scorer of the regular season with 26 ppg and best rebounder of the Ligaen with 15.2 rpg! A couple of more wins for the team and Colas would be the absolute favorite in the MVP-voting. Two other notable players on the team are Chris Nielsen and Casper Jorgensen (201-F-92). Chris Nielsen joined the team in November after leaving Bakken Bears due to disciplinary reasons. Chris Nielsen has averaged 17.7 ppg and 4.2 apg. 20 year old forward Casper Jorgensen has been a big surprise this season. The young forward scored 9.4 ppg shooting 44 % from the three point line.
In the relegation series 9th seed vs. 10th seed Aarhus BC will play against Aalborg Vikings. Both teams have had very disappointing seasons and both teams have had major roster changes and have struggled with injuries. The loser of the best of 5 series will move down to the Danish 1st division while the winner stays in the Ligaen.
Aalborg Vikings only managed to win 2 games this season. Luis Guzman (193-G-87, college: Temple), Anthony Jones (208-F-89, college: Baylor) and Milan Bjegovic (211-C-81) joined the team in January but unfortunately for the team their individual success did not manage to give the team enough wins to make the playoffs. Luis Guzman has been struggling with injuries all season being limited to 9 games and 25 mpg but still scoring 12.4 ppg and dishing out 6.0 apg. American forward Anthony Jones has been putting up 17.9 ppg, 9.3 rpg and 1.5 bpg.
Team FOG Naestved (Ligaen) agreed terms with American guard Terrence Moore (188-77kg). Moore just graduated from Emporia State University (NCAA2). He played 25 games in MIAA where he had very impressive stats: 16.3ppg, 3.7rpg, 3.6apg and 2.0spg. A very spectacular season in his career as he was named to All-MIAA 2nd Team and MIAA All-Defensive Team. As mentioned above Moore is just out of the college and it will be his first season as a pro. Horsholm 79ers (Ligaen) strengthened their roster with addition of American guard Kameron Bundy (188-79kg, agency: Duran International). Bundy just graduated from Drury (NCAA2).
