UNICS beat Maroussi in thriller.. “Today was our day and our game,” (UNICS Kazan Coach,
Stanislav Eremine) game quote from fibaeurope.com
In a thrilling game, Unics won their first ever European Trophy with a
powerful yet graceful display against Greek side Maroussi.
UNICS came at Maroussi early on, and netted 6/8 early 3pt attempts.
Those kinds of powerful 1st quarter displays is what has given
them the edge against a lot of teams this season. Maroussi proved to be
another victim of UNICS devestating gameplan.
Maroussi kept up pace with UNICS, and refused to get steamrolled by
Muursepp and Stombergas.
However, UNICS stepped up a gear and ended the 1st period with a 12:0
run and a 14-point lead, UNICS leading 30-16.
Maroussi tried to establish their inside game in the second period
through center Ivan Grgat. He scored 2 opening baskets, but UNICS’
interior defense was making it difficult for them to go inside.
Müürsepp had a dunk and then hit consecutive 3-pointers and his energy
kept UNICS firing on all cylinders.
There was, however, some hope for Maroussi. George Karagoutis made a
quick lay-up at the buzzer and they trailed 46-34 at half-time.
The 2nd half proved to be really no different from the first. Kazan
maintained a double-digit lead throughout and Maroussi never threatened
to stage a comeback rally. Maroussi fought hard, but just couldn't catch
a title hungry UNICS side.
Martin Muursepp fouled out in the 4th, but by then the result was on the
cards, and Maroussi just had to accept that UNICS played better on the
day. In a good game by both sides, UNICS proved they are the best team
in the FEL this season, and throughly earned their victory.
