Spartak Moscow is the Champion!
- Mar 21, 2006
Tonight
Spartak Moscow was crowded the 2005-2006 EuroCup Women Champion
after the second win against
Pays d'Aix Basket ,
72-66.
Spartak got into the game pretty confident with their big previous win
on the record
80-65, and that made them play a little careless in the first
quarter, finding themselves 11 points behind with 6:39 to go in the
second quarter, but
Linda Frohlich (188-F/C-79) and
Patricia Penicheiro (182-G-74, college:
ODU)
managed a pair of three-pointers pulling Spartak out of the rut and win
the first half by 2 points 39-37.
And that was it for Spartak, they never looked back, and although Pays
d'Aix kept it real and very close, the title was Spartak’s.
Pays D'Aix put up a great fight and with only 3:15 to go in the fourth
quarter, they were only two points behind at 64-62. But Spartak has
Lisa Leslie (196-C-72, college:
USC),
who scored the next four points, helping Spartak increase the distance
to 70-62 lead. In the entire game Lisa contributed with 20 points and 10
rebounds.
"Lisa
Leslie (196-C-72, college:
USC)
is the best player in the world - there is no doubt about that," said Nedelko
Lazich . “But it was the team effort that got them over a though
team as Pays D'Aix” added the same coach.
Frohlich tallied 16 points and nine rebounds, while Penicheiro came up
with 11 assists. While,
Anastasia Kostaki (172-G-78) led the way for Pays D'Aix with 22
points.
A

Interperformances),
Patricia Penicheiro (182-G-74, college:

and
Linda Frohlich (188-F/C-79) led the
Russian team to an 80-65 triumph over the French Pays D’Aix. in
Aix-en-Provence.
The French side was humiliated at home but still has a slim chance of
winning the Cup title, if they score 16 points or more, next Tuesday in
Moscow.
Spartak Moscow took the lead 14 seconds into the game on a three-pointer
from Frohlich and led the rest of the way.
Pays D’Aix got close 22-17 with 2:17 to go in the first quarter, but a
basket from
Lisa Leslie (196-C-72, college:
USC),
followed by a jump shot and then three-pointer from Frohlich gave the
Russian team a 29-19 advantage early in the second quarter, and made it
very difficult for the French to reduce the gap. When Grubin made a
three with 1:21 to play in the first half, Spartak's lead grew to 42-23.
The hosts put up a great fight in the second half, tailing the visitors
closely (13-14) in the third quarter, and even a greater battle in the
fourth quarter (23-24), but couldn’t quiet catch up with the Russians.
The closest they’ve got was a 67-57 with under five minutes on the
clock, after a three-pointer from
Catherine Jones (180-G-82).
