ALBA - Valencia BC
44-67
Valencia is the EuroCup winner for season 2009/10! They were great
defensively tonight stopping ALBA on just 44 points for the game.
Kosta Perovic (217-C-85) nailed 17 points for the Spanish squad,
Thomas Kelati
(195-G/F-82, college:
Washington St.) had 13 pts and 5 boards, while
Marko Marinovic
(183-G-83) added 12 points in this victory. ALBA didn't have anyone in
double-digits. Their leading scorers were
Derrick Byars (202-G/F-84, agency:
Priority Sports, college:
Vanderbilt) and
Steffen Hamann
(194-G-81) with 9 points each. Both teams showed their nerves at the
beginning, but it was Valencia who grabbed quick 0-4 lead. ALBA later
tied the score to 8-8 and Hamann brought them plus two with a lay up.
Nando De Colo replied with a triple to put Valencia back ahead, 10-11,
at the end of the first quarter.
Marko Marinovic opened the next period with a bomb and
Thomas Kelati joined with another one. Alba had been scoreless for
more than six minutes, what Valencia exploited to complete 0-11 run for
10-19 lead. Lishchuk dominated inside and all the above mention players
were still hot helping Valencia to score 17 more points for rest of the
first half. On the other side, ALBA was stopped to 12 pts in Q2 and
faced with 22-36 deficit. The team from Berlin slightly improved after
the breather, but they needed a way more. It was 27-38 when
Kosta Perovic took control on ALBA's big guys and together with his
teammates made 2-8 run for plus 17. Teams exchanged baskets after that
and a layup by Hamann got Alba within 33-48 at the end of the third
quarter. ALBA still struggled offensively and Valencia had plus 18 with
eight minutes to go. When the orange team reached 35-57 it was clear who
the EuroCup winner will be. There was six minutes left and rest of the
game was just the formality.

Matt Nielsen of Power Electronics Valencia, MVP
- Apr 18, 2010 The
media at the Eurocup title game voted
Matt Nielsen (208-F/C-78) of new champion Power Electronics Valencia
the MVP for his inspiration leadership all weekend. He had 7 points, 6
rebounds and 2 assists Sunday, leading his team's record defense!
'It's a great feeling, obviously. I want to congratulate Alba for
getting to the final. They did great, so credit to them. I just want to
say what a great experience it has been to play with this team. Right
from the beginning, it's been a tight-knit team, more than any I've been
around in a long time. Teams don't get much closer than this one. It's
been such an enjoyable experience. We deserved it and the fans deserved
it for helping us all the way. I'm happy it's all gone this way.'
'To be MVP is a nice honor, but I really just enjoy this team and
consider it a team award. I think we showed yesterday and today that we
are a good group with a lot of players doing different things. I think
there are eight guys who could have taken the award.'
