Athinaikos wins the EuroCup title!
- Apr 8, 2010 Athinaikos - Nadezhda O.
Athinaikos is the EuroCup winner for season 2009/10! The Greek outfit
lost tonight, but they celebrated 57-65 victory in Game One finishing
this Final with 118-114 in total.
Irena Vizbariene (196-F/C-77) scored 14 points for Athinaikos
Candice Wiggins (180-G-87, college:
Stanford) followed with 10.
Monique Currie (183-G/F-83, college:
Duke) came up with 18 points and 5 rebounds in victory, but that was
not enough for her team. Nadezhda opened the game better taking quick
Irena Vizbariene and her teammates replied with 8-4 run for rest of
the first quarter (11-11). At the beginning of Q2, actually basket by
Vizbariene in 23rd minute, the hosts grabbed 3-point lead, but the
Russian squad had an answer for that. They created 0-6 run and later
finished first half with 22-25. Athinaikos tied the score few times in
third period, but thanks to
Anastasiya Veremeenko (192-C-87) visitors were up by 2 at the end of
it (38-40). Everything was open, especially when Nadezhda grabbed 47-51
with 1:52 to go.
Monique Currie made a basket after that and Nadezhda jumped to plus
6. The hosts did not panic, despite they had a good reason that.
Candice Wiggins drained a crucial triple and later Riley and
Kalentzou helped Athinaikos to keep its lead from Game 1 and to win the
EuroCup title! As a reminder, last season it was Galatasaray.
