Led by sharp-shooting David Logan (24), Maccabi Tel-Aviv clinched its third consecutive preseason Israeli cup title with a rough 75-65 (40-39) battle against last year's Israeli league Cinderella Maccabi Ashdod.

Maccabi's recent high-flying signee Malcolm Thomas suited up but didn't partake in the contest and is expected to debut on Thursday against Spanish Unicaja Malaga in the teams' Euroleague opening game.

Behind rookie guard Chris Allen, forward Kenny Gabriel and big man Diamon Simpson, Ashdod took a surprising 13-2 lead and 17-13 first quarter advantage. Logan, the tournaments Most Valuable Player along with Israeli point guard Moran Roth (9) began to rally back completing a 40-39 halftime comeback and 55-53 lead entering the final period.

In the final frame, Logan (the only Tel Aviv player to score in double-digits) and Allen continued their shootout but it was the Euroleague guard with six treys on the night and eight points down the stretch, who closed the curtain on the Southern Israeli team.

Forwards Lior Eliyahu (Agency: Z.A.G. - Law Offices) (9) and Niklas Caner-Medley (Agency: Beo Basket) (8) combined for 14 rebounds while Guy Pnini (4) took on the distributing roll with five dimes for Tel Aviv.

Simpson, a 6-foot-7 mobile power forward out of St.Mary's University toyed with Tel Aviv's big man collecting 20 points and 12 rebounds en route to impressive tournament averages of 20.6 points and 13.3 rebounds.

Iowa State alumnus guard Allen (20) showcased both his shooting range and passing skills finishing with a game high six dimes, while versatile swingman Kenny Gabriel (10) exploded above the rim. Ashdod's ex-VCU Ram Jamie Skeen failed to impress with two points in 22 minutes of action.
