Panathinaikos Athens (A1) are trying to land 25-year old former Greek international point guard Nick Calathes (197-97kg-89, college: Florida) who played last time at Memphis Grizzlies in NBA. In 71 NBA games he averaged 4.9ppg, 1.9rpg and 2.9apg previous season.
The previous (12-13) season he played at Lokomotiv (VTB) in Russian league. The team played in three different competitions (!!!) that year, and Calathes was exposed to basketball on different levels. In 14 VTB games he had 12.6ppg, 5.3rpg, 4.2apg and 1.5spg. It was a very successful season in his career as he was selected to Eurobasket.com All-Russian PBL 2nd Team. Calathes also played 17 games in Eurocup where he had 12.9ppg, 5.9rpg, 6.7apg (top 3) and 1.4spg. He also played 30 games in VTB United League where he had 13.9ppg, 4.3rpg, 6.1apg and 1.6spg. He helped them to make it to the final.
In 2011-12 season Calathes played at Panathinaikos. In 35 games he had 8.0ppg, 2.3rpg, 3.0apg and 1.6spg. He contributed to his team winning the cup and make to league final. Calathes also played 23 games in Euroleague where he had 7.6ppg, 2.8rpg, 2.4apg and 1.2spg (in top 5). He contributed to his team making it to the Euroleague Final Four.
In 2009 Calathes was drafted by Minnesota Timberwolves (NBA) in second round (45th overall). He attended University of Florida and it is his sixth season in pro basketball.
Among other achievements Calathes won EuroCup championship title in 2013. He received also Eurobasket.com All-EuroCup European Player of the Year award in 2013.
Calathes was also a member of Greek international program for some years. He played for Greek Senior National Team between 2009 and 2013 and previously for U20 National Team in 2008. Calathes represented Greece at the Olympic Games Additional Qualifying Round in Caracas (Venezuela) two years ago. His stats at that event were 3 games: 7.3ppg, 2.0rpg, 3.0apg, FGP: 27.3%, FT: 77.8%.
Let's have closer look into Calathes' outlook: (by Joshua Motenko for NBADraft.net in 2009)
He is an exceptional passer, always putting the ball in the right place for easy baskets, and often sending passes to where his teammates should be on the floor, in a sense coaching them with each pass. He has a great shooting stroke and can hit consistently from three. He is very shifty and can get into the paint when he needs to. He plays a very composed game, and visibly pushes himself more when he makes mistakes.
His foot speed is solid but his athleticism is a concern. Defensively, he needs to work on staying in front of his man in one on one situations
