- Panathinaikos won 2002 Euroleague title - May 6, 2002
Panathinaikos had no mercy for host
Kinder Bologna and beat them in the Euroleague Final 89-83. It's a big
triumph of Greek team, which won 3rd European top clubs competition in
last 7 years. But the game itself was extremely interesting. Just to
mention shortly, Panathinaikos was already 13 points down and managed to
build up thru the game and get the lead.
Yugoslavian Dejan Bodiroga was voted MVP of the game. Panathinaikos Athens - Kinder Bologna 89-83
All-Euroleague 1st Team:
Tyus Edney (Benetton), Marko Jaric (Kinder), Emanuel Ginobili (Kinder),
Dejan Bodiroga (Panathinaikos), Dejan Tomasevic (Tau).
- Panathinaikos will face Kinder in the final - May 3, 2002
Both semifinal games were very close and no
team could be sure a victory to the last minutes. First Panathinaikos
beat strong Maccabi Tel-Aviv, and then Kinder, last year champion, beat
Benetton in a tough game. The final is on Sunday at 8:30 p.m.
Panathinaikos - Maccabi Tel Aviv 83-75
Pao controled the game from the very begining. Alvertis opened the game
with a 3 pointer, and Pao held the lead till the 7th minute. McDonald
with a huge 3 pt shot gave Maccabi their first lead, 14-15, but Pao took
over the game till the buzzer and led by 4 after 10 min. Maccabi kept
running behind Pao, but stayed close. A great finish by Parker helped
Maccabi finish the half with a 44 tie.
Maccabi went up by 2 after 4 min. in the 2nd half, and that was their
biggest lead of the game. Bodiroga took over the game, and started
making big shots. He added 2 HUGE 3 pt shots in the last Q, and Maccabi
couldn't score from the line (60%). Pao advance to the finals, and want
the cup back now.
Panathinaikos (27+23+18+21) - Bodiroga 26 + 9 rbs, center
Alvertis 11, Papadopoulos 9, Kutluay 9, Mulamerovic 6 - 2/10 FG,

McDonald 11, Parker 11 - 4/13 FG, Shelef 8, Besok 5, Curcic 3, Sharp 3,
Kinder - Benetton 90-82
Kinder got a chance to repeat a success of Split, which was the last
team which won two consecutive top European clubs trophies. But that was
not an easy game for Kinder. Benetton challenged champions. They fight
equal and when the score was 63-63, Kinder put a wall in their defense,
and did not allow Benetton to score for next 5 minutes. That was a
decisive point of the game.

Many of the Euroleague teams have complained about the "System", that
is: about the decision that regular season results are not taken into
account in the Top 16 - other than for determining the identity of the
teams in each group; thus, there is no bonus for the team finishing
first (or second), compared to the teams that finished, say, fourth
(unlike previous systems, when a higher ranking led to a home-court
advantage in the knock-out stages).
