Title belongs to Spartak....again
Spartak Moscow Region is the best
team of the European world for the second time in a row. In a Final game in Brno
the defending champions beat hosts Gambrinus 75:60. It was another hot night of
Australian
Lauren Jackson (196-F/C-81) who shined with 18 points and 12 rebounds.
Sue
Bird (175-G-80, college:
Connecticut)
posted 14 points and made 7 rebounds,
Diana Taurasi (182-G-82, college:
Connecticut)
scored 14 and
Tina
Thompson (188-F-75, agency:
Merit Sports, college:
USC)
collected 12 points and 8 rebounds.
Zuzana Zirkova (175-F/G-80) top-scored for the hosts with 16 points.
Spartak Moscow Region was stronger than Gambrinus Brno in two previous games
between the teams this season. So, there was nothing surprising when
Tina
Thompson opened the scoring list and Spartak Moscow Region started to
increase.
Lauren Jackson nailed a three for 12:2 lead int he opening tip of the game.
Machova and Kulichova brought Brno back to the game, but
Diana Taurasi made it 24:12. Shchegoleva gave the defending champions plus
15 in the second quarter for 31:16.
Tina
Thompson made it plus 18, but
Zuzana Zirkova set up the first half at 43:27.
Maiga tried hard in the beginning of the third quarter and her lay-up saw 50:31.
Diana Taurasi's jump shot in the end of the third probably answered all the
questions in the game.
Jana
Vesela (194-F-83) closed the period from the arc for 60:42. From the start
of the last quarter Gambrinus Brno was on the way to create a miracle. With 11-3
run the Czechs reduced to 63:55 with 6 minutes to play. Beres kept Brno closer
at 67:60, but there were last points for the hosts in the last three minutes of
the game. Spartak Moscow Region used a 8-0 run to close the game at 75:60.
