Traditionally at the end of each year Eurobasket
announces the European awards for last year. The
ranking was based on network of almost 300
Eurobasket journalists, who are experts in
basketball coverage from their countries. We have
the policy of not involving the fans as it may
influence the final ranking and instead of that we
rely on the opinions of experts.
The votes were made in two categories: All-Europe
and All-Europeans. All-Europe applies to the
players, who played in European leagues in last and
this season, so it may apply also to non-European
players, who played as imports in Europe.
All-Europeans category applies only to Europeans,
but also these, who played overseas (mostly in NBA).
All-Europe awards were dominated by the top players
from Euroleague and the Player of the Year Award
went similarly like last year to Greek player. But
this time it was
Dimitris Diamantidis (196-G-80) of Panathinaikos
Athens (GRE).
Last year Diamantidis was already voted to top 10
Europe players making 2nd team. But he had extremely
successful last season when he won both Euroleague
and Greek League championship and received multiple
Eurobasket.com top awards like for example Player of
the Year in Greece and Defensive Player of the Year
in both Euroleague and Greek League.
All-Europeans awards were traditionally dominated by
Europeans playing in the NBA, with just only
Diamantidis making it to 1st team.
Here the top spot was again taken by German
Dirk Nowitzki (211-F-78) from Dallas Mavericks,
then French
Tony Parker (183-G-80) of San Antonio Spurs, and
Russian
Andrei Kirilenko (205-F-81) of Utah Jazz.
Nowitzki is at the top of his career. He was the
best scorer of last edition of European
Championships and was also voted All-NBA MVP. Parker
won almost everything in the NBA, when his team won
Final Series where Parker was voted the MVP.
Kirilenko had a very successful season in NBA
leading his team to the play-offs. All 3 players
were dominant players of European Championships in
Spain and were voted to all-Eurobasket.com 1st Team
for that event.
The Eurobasket.com All-European Coach of the Year
Award for the first time is split between two
coaches.
Zeljko Obradovic and
David Blatt . Obradovic lead Panathinaikos to
Euroleague championship, while Blatt lead Russia to
European Championships title. Obradovic will try to
repeat that success with PAO and Blatt moved to
coach this season Turkish Efes Pilsen.
