2013 EuroBasket Draw takes place in Paris - Sep 21, 2012

2013 EuroBasket took place at the UNESCO building in Paris, France. 16 teams have been drawn into four groups with four teams in each. Top three teams from each group will make it into the Second Stage of the tournament. The event is slated to take place from 15 to 30 June 2013 in France.

First Round Groups:
Group A: Montenegro, Ukraine, Turkey and Slovak Republic
Group B: Sweden, Spain, Russia and Italy
Group C: Serbia, Latvia, France, Great Britain
Group D: Lithuania, Belarus, Czech Republic and Croatia.


EuroBasket Women Seedings Announced - Sep 18, 2012

FIBA Europe has announced the seedings for the EuroBasket Women 2103 draw which will take place in Paris on Friday.

Reigning European champions Russia are the highest-ranked team and in the top group of seeds alongside EuroBasket Women 2011 silver medallists Turkey, bronze medallists France and fourth-placed Czech Republic.

Croatia, who had taken fifth place at EuroBasket Women 2011, are in the second pot of seeds alongside Olympic Games hosts Great Britain and the two teams that finished with the best record in the Qualification Round last July, Italy and the Slovak Republic.

The third and fourth groups of seeds are made up of the remaining eight teams that also earned a ticket to next summer's EuroBasket Women through the Qualification Round, according to their win/loss record and goal average.

The draw will be made at Maison de l' UNESCO in the French capital on Friday afternoon and will be broadcast live on FIBAEurope.com from 4pm.

2013 EuroBasket Qualifications are over (Round 10) - Jul 14, 2012

Group A
Ukraine - Hungary 73-66
Ukraine booked a spot for the 2013 EuroBasket in France. They outplayed Hungary in do-or-die game today 73-66 joining them with 5-3 record in Group A. Ukraine finished as the second ranked team in this pool thanks to Round 5 victory in Hungary. Today, visitors had much better start (14-22), but Ukraine took control on them after that to register this crucial win. Quarters: 14-22, 21-16, 22-13, 16-15. Alina Iagupova (186-G-92, agency: LBM Management) led the hosts in scoring with 23 points and she grabbed 8 rebounds as well. Olexandra Kurasova (186-F-86) had monster double-double of 16 points and 19 rebounds (valuation 29, MVP), while Ganna Zarytska (182-F-86, agency: Data Plus Group) helped with 12 points. In defeat, Katalin Honti (175-G-87) collected 21 points and 5 rebs. Allie Quigley (180-G-86, college: De Paul) and Dora Horti (195-C-87, agency: Laszlo Vinko Group) stopped to 11 pts apiece. Their Hungary failed to reach the final tournament.

Israel - Portugal 58-47
Israel outplayed Portugal in the last round of 2013 EuroBasket Qualifications. It was a 58-47 victory for the home squad, who finished with 4-4 record in Group A (No.4). Portugal is the last ranked team in this pool with 0-8. Third period was the crucial one in this meeting and it belonged to Israel 18-7. Quarters: 14-12, 16-16, 18-7, 10-12. Katia Levitsky (190-PF-85, agency: Data Plus Group, college: Villanova) stepped up for the hosts with 14 points and 8 rebounds. Shay Doron (175-SG-85, college: Maryland) had 12 points and 5 rebs, while Liron Cohen (173-G-82) netted 11 points. Visitors got 11 points and 12 boards from Sofia Silva (187-C-90). Ana Oliveira (176-F-83, college: UTSA) also scored 11 pts and Maria Correia (174-G/F-91) added four less. Both teams failed to reach the final tournament in France. Belarus and Ukraine are two countries which advanced from this group.

Group B
Estonia - Serbia 58-97
Serbia had no troubles to beat Estonia today with almost 40 points difference, 58-97. It was the crucial game for Serbia and after this victory they booked a spot for 2013 EuroBasket in France. Serbia is the second ranked team of Group B with 6-2 record. Top ranked Montenegro and No.3 Poland finished with the same numbers. Estonia should forget these qualifications as soon as possible because they ended with poor 0-8 score. Serbia dominated from the beginning and Estonia simply was not able to reply. Quarters: 16-30, 14-18, 13-18, 15-31. Jelena Maksimovic (192-C-82) (9 rebs) and Milica Dabovic (175-PG-82) (5 as) led the winners with 21 points each. Maksimovic spent just 17 minutes on the court. Sara Krnjic (193-C-91) was third scorer in victory with 18 points (7 rebs). The hosts got 17 pts from Mirjam Nikolai (177-G-86) and 14 pts, plus 7 boards from Mailis Pokk (185-F/C-92).

Poland - Switzerland 64-51
Poland was better than Switzerland 64-51, but it didn't help them to book a ticket for 2013 EuroBasket in France. Serbia celebrated in Estonia today and grabbed the second place in Group B. Poland is No.3 with 6-2 record and failed to advance. Switzerland finished 2-6 record in this pool taking position No.4. Poland made 8-point lead in the first ten minutes of the game and jumped to plus 13 until the halftime. The hosts managed to keep that lead for rest of the way. Agnieszka Majewska (195-C-82) (6 rebs) and Martyna Koc (186-C-83, agency: Promotex) (5 rebs) scored 11 points each for the winners. Agnieszka Skobel (179-F-89) and Magdalena Losi (173-F-80, agency: Promotex) added 10 points and 6 boards apiece. Visitors got 20 points from Karen Twehues (182-G-83, college: Cincinnati) and Marielle Giroud (180-F-87) shined with 16 pts, plus 15 boards. Their third scorer was Lara Thalmann (172-G-88) with only 5 pts (5 rebs).

Group C
Belgium - Holland 72-61
Belgium registered its first win in 2013 EuroBasket Qualifications. They handed 72-61 loss to Holland for 1-7 record in Group C. This win didn't help Belgium to avoid the last place in this pool. Holland ended as No.4 with 2-6 and both teams failed to reach the final tournament in France. Laurence Van Malderen (190-C-81, agency: LBM Management) (7 rebs) and Noemie Mayombo (170-PG-91, agency: LBM Management) led the winners with 13 points each. Emma Meesseman (192-C-93, agency: LBM Management) added 12 points and 7 rebs. In defeat, Naomi Halman (191-F/C-86, agency: Regeneracom Sports, college: Cal-Irvine) was better than the others with 16 points and 5 boards. Their second scorer was Tanya Broering (178-G-84) with 13 pts (6 rebs). Belgium exploded in the last ten minutes to take the victory tonight. Quarters: 15-13, 16-26, 22-13, 19-9.

Slovakia - Slovenia 93-54
Slovakia is the winner of Group C with almost perfect 7-1 record. They handed 93-54 loss to Slovenia today and will compete next year at the EuroBasket in France. Slovenia finished qualifications with 4-4 record and failed to reach the final tournament. They had big problems with injuries. Slovakia took control on its rival from the beginning and never looked back. Quarters: 20-13, 22-13, 18-13, 33-15. Timea Sujova (173-G-84) scored 16 points in victory and Katarina Tetemondova (188-F/C-88) added 15 points, plus 5 boards. Ivana Jalcova (182-G-83) netted 13 pts to help her country. In defeat, Tina Trebec (189-F-90, agency: Kotnik Sports Agency) was better than the others with 15 points and 5 rebounds. Sandra Pirsic (195-C-84) and Martina Osterman (188-F-88) stopped to 11 pts each.

Group D
Germany - Sweden 62-73
Sweden closed 2013 EuroBasket Qualifications in style. They handed 62-73 home loss to Germany for almost perfect 7-1 record in Group D. Sweden is the winner of this pool and of course booked a ticket for the final tournament in France next year. Germany finished as third ranked team with 3-5 record. Sweden was up by 5 at the halftime and jumped to 11-point lead with ten minutes to go. Germany was not able to reply and visitors celebrated comfortable win. Louice Halvarsson (189-C-89, agency: Josep and Nicolas) paced Sweden with 20 points and 6 rebounds. Frida Eldebrink (174-G-88, agency: Josep and Nicolas) had 16 points and 6 rebs, while Elin Eldebrink (174-G-88, agency: Josep and Nicolas) added 10 points and 12 boards. The hosts got 17 points from Sarah Austmann (179-G/F-85). Katharina Fikiel (193-F/C-87) had 15 pts and 8 rebs.

Romania - Bulgaria 75-68 OT
Romania closed 2013 EuroBasket qualifications with victory. They celebrated 75-68 OT win against Bulgaria today for 3-5 record in Group D (5th place). At the other side, Bulgaria ended as the last ranked team in this pool with 1-7. Both teams failed to reach the final tournament in France. Romania made 13-6 in extra five minutes to take the victory today. Quarters: 23-15, 8-13, 19-18, 12-16, 13-6. Gabriela Marginean (182-F-87, college: Drexel) was a key player for the winners with 26 points. Elisabeth Pavel (192-C-90) had double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Ancuta Stoenescu (169-G-80, agency: Data Plus Group) collected 8 pts, 6 rebs and 5 assists. In Bulgaria, Radoslava Bachvarova (183-F-87, agency: LBM Management, college: VCU) was better than the others with 18 points and 7 rebounds. Vera Perostiyska (196-C-82, college: FIU) (10 rebs) and Daniela Georgieva (184-G/F-86) (5 rebs) posted 15 and 13 pts respectively.

Group E
Finland - Italy 62-82
Italy ended 2013 EuroBasket qualifications in style. They cruised past Finland on the road 62-82 for almost perfect 7-1 record in Group E. Italy won this pool and of course advanced to the final tournament in France. Finland finished as No.4 with 3-5 and failed to advance. Italy exploded in the second half to take the victory today. Quarters: 21-22, 17-21, 16-24, 8-15. Ilaria Zanoni (180-G-86) shined with 21 points for 19 minutes on the court. Raffaella Masciadri (185-F-80) (5 rebs) and Giulia Gatti (172-G-89, agency: LBM Management) (5 rebs) netted 10 and 9 points respectively. Taru Tuukkanen (190-C-77, agency: Regeneracom Sports, college: Xavier) shined in defeat with 24 points and 13 rebounds. She was the MVP of this meeting with valuation 31. Heta Korpivaara (186-G/F-84, agency: Regeneracom Sports, college: Seton Hall) (6 rebs) and Dionne Pounds (174-F-84, agency: Regeneracom Sports, college: Lamar) scored 8 points each.

Greece - Luxembourg 70-62
Greece celebrated 70-62 victory against Luxembourg in the last day of 2013 EuroBasket Qualifications. Greece finished as third ranked team of Group E with 5-3 record, but it was not enough for them to advance. Latvia, who also has 5-3, reached the final tournament due to better numbers in two games against Greece. Latvia outplayed Greece 63-46 in Round 3, but Greece celebrated 14-point home win in Round 8 and failed to advance for just 3 pts. Fedra Skiadopoulou (191-C-90) led the winners today with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Zoi Dimitrakou (188-F-87, agency: Josep and Nicolas) scored 14 points and Lolita Lymoura (180-G-85, agency: LBM Management) had 8. In defeat, Cathy Schmit (170-G-90) collected 15 points and 6 assists, while Lena Hetto (184-F-93) added 14 pts and 6 rebs. Nadia Mossong (182-F-86, college: E.Kentucky) followed with 13 points and 11 boards. Quarters: 18-7, 20-18, 17-19, 15-18. Lithuania ended as the last ranked team in Group E with 0-8.


Qualifications, Round 9 review: Two more spots left for 2013 EuroBasket in France - Jul 12, 2012

Group A
Belarus - Ukraine 68-60
Belarus booked a ticket for 2013 EuroBasket in France. They outplayed Ukraine 68-60 for 6-2 record in Group A. Belarus is the winner of this pool and already played all of its eight games. Ukraine dropped to 4-3, but still has a nice chance to take the second place. They will have to beat Hungary on Saturday in do-or-die game. Anastasiya Veremeenko (194-C-87) led Belarus with double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds. Natalia Anufryienka (174-G-85, agency: LBM Management) had 16 points and 5 rebs, and Alexandra Tarasava (170-PG-88) posted 12 pts. In Ukraine, Alina Iagupova (186-G-92, agency: LBM Management) was better than the others with 16 points and 8 rebs. Olexandra Kurasova (186-F-86) (5 as) and Viktoria Mircheva (190-C-87) posted 11 and 10 pts respectively. Quarters: 19-12, 21-11, 9-16, 19-21. Ukraine will be the host on Saturday.

Hungary - Israel 73-66
Hungary was better than Israel 73-66 in Round Nine of the 2013 EuroBasket Qualifications. Thanks to this victory Hungary improved to 5-2 record in Group A, while at the other side Israel dropped to 3-4. Hungary will meet Ukraine in the last round and it will be decisive game for the second place in this pool. Ukraine celebrated in Hungary in Round Five 73-78, so Hungary will have to win with at least 6 pts on Saturday. Israel failed to reach the EuroBasket. Allie Quigley (180-G-86, college: De Paul) stepped up for the winners with 20 points and 8 rebounds. Katalin Honti (175-G-87) (5 as) scored 13 pts, while Nora Nagy (185-F-85, agency: Laszlo Vinko Group) helped with 12 points and 9 rebs. Group B
Serbia - Poland 67-62
Serbia handed 67-62 loss to Poland in Round Nine of the 2013 EuroBasket Qualifications. Most likely it was the crucial game for the second place in Group B. Thanks to this victory Serbia joined Poland with 5-2 record and also Serbia holds a tiebreaker as Poland won in Round 4 with only 2 pts. If Serbia beats last ranked Estonia on Saturday they will advance to EuroBasket. Estonia will be the host. Poland can only hope that Estonia can surprise Serbia and also Poland has to beat Switzerland at home. Ana Dabovic (183-G/F-89) scored 20 points for Serbia tonight and Tamara Radocaj (170-PG-87) added 13 pts. Jelena Maksimovic (192-C-82) followed them with 8 points and 9 rebounds. Poland got 13 points from Agnieszka Skobel (179-F-89) and Agnieszka Szott (185-F-82, agency: Data Plus Group). Martyna Koc (186-C-83, agency: Promotex) stopped to 11 pts.
Skobel made a triple for Poland with 8 seconds remaining cutting the margin to 63-62. However, Dabovic was sent to the line after that and she made both free throws. Poland had six seconds for the last possession, but Marina Mandic made a steal and Jovanovic made it at the buzzer for the final 67-62 victory. Quarters: 19-12, 16-20, 10-14, 22-16. Saturday is the last day of qualification.

Montenegro - Estonia 81-61
Expected win for Montenegro, who finished 2013 EuroBasket Qualifications with 6-2 record. That will be enough for the first place in Group B and of course for the EuroBasket ticket. Montenegro entered to qualifications with big ambitions and they managed to meet all expectations. At the other side, Estonia faced with seventh loss in this pool. Iva Perovanovic (189-C/F-83) top-scored in Montenegro with 23 points and she also pulled down 6 rebounds. Jelena Skerovic (176-G-80, agency: Josep and Nicolas) almost registered triple-double in this game with 19 pts, 11 as and 8 rebs, while Snezana Aleksic (172-G-89) netted 14 pts (5 rebs). In Estonia, Merike Anderson (180-F/G-81, agency: LBM Management) delivered 22 points. Valeria Kast (201-C-87, agency: Josep and Nicolas, college: N.Mexico) scored 12 pts and grabbed 7 rebs. Montenegro exploded in the first half making 25-point lead. Quarters: 23-14, 29-13, 16-17, 13-17. Estonia will host Serbia on Saturday to close the qualifications.
Group C
Holland - Slovakia 51-66
Slovakia booked a ticket for 2013 EuroBasket in France. They handed 51-66 home loss to Holland on Wednesday night for almost perfect 6-1 record in Group C. Slovakia will have a chance to win this pool if they beat Slovenia in the last round of qualifications. That game is scheduled for Saturday. At the other side, Holland fell to 2-5 and their last rival will be Belgium. Slovakia had impressive first half of the game making 18-point lead. They had no troubles to keep it for rest of the way. Quarters: 18-24, 9-21, 13-11, 11-10. Lucia Kupcikova (184-F-84) shined with 20 points and 5 rebounds for the guests and Anna Jurcenkova (195-C-85) added 12 pts, plus 11 boards. Ivana Jalcova (182-G-83) collected 9 points and 5 rebs. For the hosts, Marianne Van der Hoek (180-F-90) delivered 15 points and Naomi Halman (191-F/C-86, agency: Regeneracom Sports, college: Cal-Irvine) had one less, plus 9 rebounds. Tanya Broering (178-G-84) was limited to 7 pts and 5 rebs.

Lithuania - Belgium 61-53
Lithuania was better than Belgium 61-53 in Round 9 of 2013 EuroBasket Qualifications. The hosts finished qualifications with 6-2 record in Group C and secured a spot for EuroBasket. If Slovakia fails in the last round, Lithuania will be the winner of this group. If not, Lithuania will finish as No.2, but that is just the formality as both teams already booked a ticket for France. Belgium faced with seventh loss (0-7) and closes the standings in this pool. Lithuania had to work hard until the end to grab this victory. Quarters: 17-14, 13-16, 16-14, 15-9. Their key player was Gintare Petronyte (196-C-89) with double-double of 19 points and 19 rebounds (valuation 31). Inesa Visgaudaite (172-PG-91) scored 9 points and Giedre Paugaite (192-C-90) added 8 pts, plus 6 boards. Anne-Sophie Strubbe (182-SF-90) answered with 15 points and 6 rebounds in defeat. Emma Meesseman (192-C-93, agency: LBM Management) almost had double-double 11 pts and 9 rebs, while Laurence Van Malderen (190-C-81, agency: LBM Management) posted 8 pts and 6 boards.
Group D
Spain - Romania 68-54
Spain finished 2013 EuroBasket Qualifications with 68-54 home win against Romania. The hosts registered 6-2 record in Group D and booked a ticket for EuroBasket in France. Spain will be the winner of this pool if Sweden fails against Germany in the last round. If not, Spain will end as No.2. At the other side, Romania fell to 2-5 and will meet Bulgaria in the last round. Spain shined in first and third period to take the victory on Wednesday night. Quarters: 25-13, 13-14, 17-8, 13-19. Cristina Ouvina (174-G-90) had 11 points and 5 rebs for the winners, and Marta Xargay Casademont (180-G-90, agency: Josep and Nicolas) scored 10 pts. Anna Cruz (173-PG-86, agency: Josep and Nicolas) and Elisa Aguilar (177-G-76, agency: Josep and Nicolas, college: G.Washington) posted 9 points each. Bulgaria - Germany 67-60
Bulgaria finally registered its first win in 2013 EuroBasket Qualifications. They outplayed Germany 67-60 for 1-6 score in Group D. At the other side, Germany dropped to 3-4 record. Both teams failed to reach the EuroBasket in France, despite there is one more round to go in qualifications. Greece faced with third loss and will not be able to reach the second place, even if they beat Luxembourg on Saturday. Giorgia Sottana (177-G-88) stepped up for the hosts with 18 points and 6 assists, and Raffaella Masciadri (185-F-80) followed her with 14 points and 7 boards. Everything is still open in this pool, but not for Portugal who dropped to 0-7. Hungary smashed its host in the second period and later had no troubles to keep the comfortable lead. Quarters: 11-18, 9-20, 13-16, 20-19. Allie Quigley (180-G-86, college: De Paul) stepped up for the guests with 23 points and 8 rebounds (valuation 33, MVP). It was a real thriller and Israel celebrated thanks to Liron Cohen's (173-G-82) lay-up, plus two free throws. Trafimava committed a turnover for Belarus (bad pass) with 16 seconds to go and Tatyana Troina (188-F-81, college: S.Carolina) made unsportsmanlike foul after that. As mentioned above, Cohen made one of two free throws and banked a jump shot with foul in the next possession. She made that extra FT and Belarus had 6 seconds at the other side, but Troina committed a turnover (ball handling). Quarters: 16-11, 17-25, 12-14, 15-8. At the same time, Montenegro dropped to the second place with 5-2 score. Poland had impressive start making 15-point lead in the first ten minutes, but visitors replied in Q2 closing the gap to 32-28 until the halftime. Montenegro intensified defense after the breather limiting Poland to just 4 points in Q3, while they drained 18 at the other side and it seemed that Montenegro will take the victory in this game. However, Poland didn't give up and made impressive 14-1 run at the beginning of Q4. At the other side, Slovenia dropped to 4-3 and their chance to reach the final tournament drastically decreased. Despite a good start (10-15), visitors faced with minus 5 at the halftime (33-28). Slovakia made a huge step toward 2013 EuroBasket in France. They grabbed 60-58 home win against Lithuania for 5-1 record in Group C. It means that Slovakia is now alone on top of the standings, while Lithuania slipped to the second place with 5-2. Slovakia made 15-7 lead at the beginning and later jumped to 44-27 at the halftime. Lithuania held Slovakia to just eight points in the last period to produce an unlikely comeback led by Ginatre Petronyte who was too hot to handle under the hoop at times and found herself on the line an eye-popping 17 times. It was 52-41 for the hosts with 10:00 remaining. After lay-up by Paugaite visitors came to 59-58 with 2:11 to go and teams went to thrilling finish. Lithuania demonstrated its power against Holland last night. Visitors cruised to 42-63 victory in Almere for 4-1 record in Group C of the 2013 EuroBasket Qualifications. Lithuania shares the first place in this pool with Slovenia. At the other side, Holland says No.4 with just one win. The hosts made 13-8 lead in the first ten minutes, but Lithuania answered with 9-16 in Q2 and later jumped to 14-point lead with 10 minutes remaining in the game. Holland was not able to reply and Lithuania marched to the final 42-63 victory. Jelena Dubljevic (191-C-87) scored 19 points, grabbed 11 boards and issued 4 assists to lead the visitors. Estonia fell at 0-3 record after the loss. Montenegro dominated from start to finish. They unloaded 27 points in the opening quarter to take a 10-point lead. Montenegro kept the hosts at bay throughout the second quarter. Estonia faced a 17-point deficit at halftime 26:43. Montenegro continue to mount the lead in the second half. They entered the fourth frame up by as many as 27 points and never looked back en route to the win. Poland - Serbia 76-74
The Polish squad pip Serbia in Krosno at the EuroBasket Women Qualification Round. In one of the top games of Round 4 the hosts won over Serbia 76:74. It was an offensive start in the game and both teams managed to show quick successful baskets in the opening period. Serbia grabbed 28:20 lead and led 13 points in the first half. Jovanovic and Jelena Maksimovic sent the teams to the lockers at 49:40. Later on Poland dominated the court and caught up with the opponents. The created a run as Martyna Koc (186-C-83, agency: Promotex), Weronika Idczak (177-G-89) and Agnieszka Szott each scored to knot the contest at 55:55. Losi scored for 64:63 and Weronika Idczak nailed three for 64:59. Jelena Maksimovic tied the game at 74:74, but Martyna Koc brought an important victory for the hosts. Lithuania scored the first 5 points in the game, but could not keep the lead at the end of the frame. Raman and Emma Meesseman (192-C-93, agency: LBM Management) brought 19:18 and Van Malderen scored for 26:24 early in the second. Due to 17-13 in the second period, Lithuania however grabbed 35:32 halftime advantage. Later on the guests continued their run and reached 48:40 midway through the third period. Slovak Republic improved to 2-1 record in Group C, while the Dutch side fell at 0-3. The hosts scored the first 4 points in the game and never looked behind after. They reached 16:6 at the end of the period as Jurcenkova closed the frame with a lay-up. They maintained the lead throughout the opening quarter posting a 25:18 advantage after ten minutes. Spain stayed in front throughout the second quarter. They ensured a 37:32 halftime lead. It was a key game in the group and brought so much interest in the Lithuanian city. The guests took 18:17 lead after the first ten minutes and then Vynuchalova sent the teams to the lockers at 35:34. Marina Solopova (180-G/F-90) later tied the game at 41:41 and then Paugaite brought 46:45 for the hosts. Gintare Petronyte (196-C-89) and Nacickaite closed the third period at 54:51. No matter how hard the Slovakian side tried to catch up with Lithuania, they could not win the game. Marina Solopova and Linkeviciene were perfect from the free throw line and then Paugaite brought the final points for the winners. Linkeviciene chipped in with 21 points for the winners and Marina Solopova added 19. Gintare Petronyte posted 17, while Paugaite had 10. Vynuchalova ended up with 13 points for the guests and Kupcikova scored 11.

Slovenia - Holland 68-52
Slovenia recorded the third straight win at the start of 2013 EuroBasket Qualifying Round. They outscored Netherlands at home court to take 3-0 record on top of Group C. Nika Baric accounted for 18 points to pace the winners. Slovenia ensured a quick start. They held Netherlands to 7 points in the first quarter to pile up a 12-point lead. Slovenia increased the tempo in the second frame. They cleared off to accumulate a massive 28-point advantage. Netherlands however did not say die. The Dutch team went on a 25:15 run in the third frame to cut the deficit. They managed to narrow the distance even further in the fourth period but came up short of victory at the end. Maja Erkic (183-G/F-85) netted 12 points, while Sandra Pirsic (195-C-84) delivered 10 points for the winners. Spain demolish Germany in Avila at the EuroBasket Women Qualification Round. After a loud upset from Swede, Spain bounced back with 66:39 win over the German side. Spain went on an early lead and Ouvina brought 16:12. Elisa Aguilar (177-G-76, agency: Josep and Nicolas, college: G.Washington) closed a 6-0 run early in the second, while she later nailed three for 29:14. Mankertz managed to send the teams to the lockers at 35:21 at the halftime. In the second half Spain played even better in defense. Both teams nailed 11 points each in the third quarter, while Spain limited the opponents to just 7 points in the last stanza. Spain won the last period 20-7 and celebrated the second win in Group D. Elisa Aguilar led the way with 12 points and Valdemoro netted 11. Ouvina and Palau followed them with 8 apiece. Bar finished the night with 13 points in defeat and Breitreiner scored 7.

Bulgaria - Sweden 60-80
Sweden continue their winning streak at the EuroBasket Women Qualification Round. The Scandinavian side overcame Bulgaria 80:60 in the start of Day 3. Sweden produced an offensive start and took 29:24 after the first 10 minutes. Stanoeva however gave the hosts 34:33 lead and Georgieva kept the advantage at 40:39. On top 41-40 at half, Sweden poured in the first six points of the second half and ended up outscoring the Bulgarians 21-9 in the frame to take command for good. Halvarsson and Frida Eldebrink (174-G-88, agency: Josep and Nicolas) scored for 71:53 and Andersson brought 73:55. Sweden added 18-11 in the second frame for the final success. Italy posted the initial win at the 2013 EuroBaket Qualifying Round. They hosted Luxembourg and gained a convincing victory. Italy are now at 1-1 record, while Luxembourg slipped at 1-2 in Group E. Ilaria Zanoni (180-G-86) scored 16 points to lead well-balanced effort from the Azzurri. Italy cleared off in the opening quarter. The hosts outscored Luxembourg for a 22:8 lead. Italy boosted the margin in the second frame. They ensured a 48:23 halftime advantage. Italy dominated in the third term. Krastina and Tamane later closed the half at 37:22. In the third period the tempo had slowed down as both teams nailed 8 points. It gave Latvia 45:30 advantage after three quarters. Krastina and Eibele scored for 56:34 and Karklina nailed three later for 61:44. Papamichail and Karklina brought the last points for their teams as the board showed 63:46 at the end of the game. Tamane top-scored for the winners with 18 points and Liene Jansone added 13. Krastina notched 12, while Karklina had 8. Romania started to play better and after 25-18 in the frame trailed only 36:32 at the halftime. They tried really hard but could not come closer to the hosts. Sarah Austmann (179-G/F-85) brought 55;48 after three quarters and then Menz scored for 63:49. Fikiel and Ancuta Stoenescu (169-G-80, agency: Data Plus Group) were the last players to score for their teams. Bar top-scored for the winners with 16 points and Fikiel netted 13. Breitreiner scored 9, while Richter and Sarah Austmann added 8 apiece. Pavel collected 18 points and 18 rebounds in the losing effort. Ancuta Stoenescu also scored 18 and Marginean notched 16.

Sweden - Spain 78-69
Sweden shock Spain in Sodertalje in Day 2 of the 2013 EuroBasket Qualifications. The Scandinavian team celebrated a surprising 78:69 win for 1-1 records. Sweden scored the first 5 points in the game and Eldebrink brought 17:9. Palau and Elisa Aguilar (177-G-76, agency: Josep and Nicolas, college: G.Washington) managed to reduce to 20:18 and Amaya Valdemoro (184-F-76, agency: Josep and Nicolas) nailed three for 22:21 early in the second. No matter how hard the guests tried to recover, they could not catch up with the hosts. Eldebrink and Andersson closed the half at 43:35 and then Halvarsson brought 48:37. Nordstrom shock the opponents for 60:42 and Hamilton nailed two for 66:46. Sweden did not mind 10-22 in the last stanza and won the game. Eldebrink top-scored for the winners with 24 points and Halvarsson netted 17. Aili nailed 9, while Andersson posted 8. Amaya Valdemoro replied with 13 points in the losing effort, whilst Cruz and Ble had 11 each.

Group E
Luxembourg - Latvia 60-95
Latvia takes 2-0 record in Group E of the EuroBasket Women Qualification. The Baltic side overcame Luxembourg 95:60 for the top position. Luxembourg suffered their second loss in the group. Hetting and Nadia Mossong (182-F-86, college: E.Kentucky) gave the first lead for the hosts, but it was their last one. Tamane later scored for 15:6 and Eibele brought 20:8. It became clear about the winner later in the frame when Steinberga closed it at 29:11. Jansone and Karklina scored for 35:18, while Putnina delivered two for 42:22. Tamane sent the teams to the lockers at 53:27. Latvia also added 24-13 in the third period and did not mind 18-20 in the last stanza. Jansone top-scored for the winners with 18 points, while Krastina posted 15. Tamane delivered 11, whilst Horelika and Putnina notched 10 apiece. Nadia Mossong ended up with 16 points in the losing case and Lynn Kauffmann (174-PG-94) added 10.

Greece - Finland 72-49
Finland is upset in Maroussi in the second game of the EuroBasket Women Qualification. The Finnish side lost to Greece 49:72 and fell at 1-1 record. Taru Tuukkanen (190-C-77, agency: Regeneracom Sports, college: Xavier) gave the guests their first lead but as it became clear after it was their last one. Greece responded with a 15-0 run and Skiadopoulou later scored for 20:5. Kalentzou nailed three for 30:9 and Dimitrakou made two free throws for 38:16. Katerina Sotiriou (187-F-84, agency: FCM) and Papamichail scored for 50:18 early in the third, while Taru Tuukkanen and Sten reduced to 54:29. Wilson scored for 61:36 and Leino brought 69:44. Lehtoranta was the last to score in defeat as the teams finished the game in Maroussi. Dimitrakou poured in 15 points in the losing effort and Katerina Sotiriou scored 11. Chatzinikolaou and Afroditi Kosma (187-F/C-83) delivered 10 points each in a win. Taru Tuukkanen collected 15 points and 13 rebounds in defeat and Sten nailed 14.


Round One of 2013 EuroBasket Qualifications - Jun 14, 2012

Group A
Belarus - Hungary 51-47
Belarus and Hungary met last night in Round One of the 2013 EuroBasket Qualifications. The hosts celebrated 51-47 victory and now they have 1-0 record in Group A. Anastasiya Veremeenko (194-C-87) stepped up for the winners with 12 points and 9 rebounds. Katerina Snytsina (188-F-85) had 10 points and was the last one with double digits in scoring for Belarus. At the other side, Krisztina Raksanyi (180-G-91) collected 10 points and 5 rebounds. Anna Vadja (191-F/C-84, agency: Josep and Nicolas) stopped to 8 points and 10 boards in this meeting. Teams were tied at 47-47 with something more then 4 minutes remaining in the game. Belarus managed to keep its rival winless for rest of the way, while Anastasiya Veremeenko made two lay-ups on the other side to secure the victory for the hosts. Quarters: 13-12, 20-16, 9-12, 9-7. In Round Two, Belarus will meet Portugal. Hungary will take a rest and will continue in Round 3.

Ukraine - Portugal 92-38
Ukraine demonstrated wonderful performance in the first round of the 2013 EuroBasket Qualifications. They destroyed Portugal 92-38 for 1-0 score in Group A. Participants of this pool are also Belarus, Israel and Hungary. First two teams at the end of qualifications will advance to EuroBasket in France. Olexandra Kurasova (186-F-86) led Ukraine last night with 15 points and 5 rebounds. Viktoria Mircheva (190-C-87) (6 rebs) and Iryna Tsekova (177-G/F-78, agency: Promotex) followed her with 13 points each. At the other side, Portugal did not have anyone with double digits in scoring. Their best players were Sofia Silva (187-C-90) and Carla Freitas (170-G-80) with 8 points each. Ukraine took control on Portugal from the very beginning and never looked back. Quarters: 22-10, 24-6, 26-12, 20-10. In Round Two, Ukraine will meet Israel, while Portugal will play against Israel.

Group B
Estonia - Switzerland 58-62
Great win for Switzerland at the start of 2013 EuroBasket Qualifications. They handed 58-62 home loss to Estonia improving to 1-0 record in Group B. Montenegro, Serbia and Poland also participate in this pool and all of them fight for the first two places, which lead to EuroBasket in France. Switzerland shined in the last quarter of the game to secure this very valuable victory. Estonia was 54-50 up with 8 minutes to go, but then visitors created 4-12 run for rest of the way. Karen Twehues (182-G-83, college: Cincinnati) top-scored in victory with 18 points and Sarah Kershaw (180-SF-85) followed her with 16. Alexia Rol (175-F-82) netted 9 pts in this meeting. For the hosts, Merike Anderson (180-F/G-81, agency: LBM Management) was better than the others with 23 points. Kerttu Jallai (180-F-90, agency: Regeneracom Sports) (8 rebs) and Viive-Kai Rebane (182-F-89) stopped to 11 and 10 pts respectively. Quarters: 19-18, 17-15, 12-11, 10-18. Switzerland will host Montenegro on Saturday, while Estonia goes to Poland.

Montenegro - Serbia 85-68
Two teams from ex Yugoslavia met last night in Round One of the 2013 EuroBasket Qualifications. Montenegro celebrated comfortable 85-68 victory for 1-0 score in Group B. Participants of this pool are also Switzerland, Poland and Estonia. All of them fight for one of the first two places which lead to EuroBasket in France. Montenegro had great beginning of the game and they shined after the breather as well to secure the victory. Eshaya Murphy (182-G/F-85, college: USC) exploded with 26 points and 15 rebounds in 34 minutes on the court. She reached valuation 37 and was the MVP of this game. Iva Perovanovic (189-C/F-83) also was great adding 20 points and 14 rebs, while Jelena Dubljevic (191-C-87) helped her team with 18 pts, 14 rebs and 7 assists. At the other side, Serbia got 21 points and 8 rebs from Milica Dabovic (175-PG-82). Ana Dabovic (183-G/F-89) and Tamara Radocaj (170-PG-87) (6 rebs) stopped to 15 and 12 points respectively. Quarters: 28-16, 12-15, 24-13, 21-24. Montenegro will meet Poland on Saturday. Serbia will take a rest in Round 2.

Group C
Belgium - Slovenia 59-63
Slovenia grabbed very valuable victory against Belgium in Round One of the 2013 EuroBasket Qualifications. They celebrated in Brussels 59-63 in very exciting meeting. Belgium had an early four-point lead but Slovenia asserted themselves in the second quarter and went on top, 22-30. With 3 minutes remaining in the first half visitors had plus 13, but Emma Meesseman cut the margin to 35-28 after two quarters. Slovenia stayed comfortably ahead in the third quarter but Belgium made a run in the fourth that almost saw them steal the victory. The hosts came to 54-47 and later, thanks to Messeman and Anne-Sophie Strubbe (182-SF-90), they came even closer to 60-58 with 70 seconds to go. Teams did not use their next possessions and Tina Trebec (189-F-90, agency: Kotnik Sports Agency) was sent to the line making two FTs for her team. Slovenia fouled Emmanuella Mayombo and she made only one of two with 10 seconds remaining in the game. With two successful free throws Maja Erkic (183-G/F-85) sealed the victory for Slovenia after that.
Maja Erkic led the winners in scoring with 19 points. Tina Trebec had 13 points and 6 rebounds, and Sandra Pirsic (195-C-84) added 12 pts. Belgium got double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds from Emma Meesseman (192-C-93, agency: LBM Management). Anne-Sophie Strubbe and Sara Leemans (178-G/F-88) scored 11 points each. Quarters: 16-21, 12-14, 17-17, 14-11. Slovenia will host Lithuania on Sunday, while Belgium goes to Slovakia.

Lithuania - Holland 88-47
It was a great game by Lithuania in Round One of the 2013 EuroBasket Qualifications. The home squad handed 88-47 loss to Holland and now has 1-0 score in Group C. Lithuania exploded in the second and last quarter to register this 41-point win. Gintare Petronyte (196-C-89) shined for the hosts with double-double of 14 points and 13 rebounds. Giedre Paugaite (192-C-90) (5 rebs) and Sandra Linkeviciene (176-G-82) delivered 13 and 12 pts. In Holland, Laura Kooij (184-F/C-82) collected 15 points and 6 rebs. Their second scorer was Naomi Halman (191-F/C-86, agency: Regeneracom Sports, college: Cal-Irvine) with 8 points (7 rebs) and Anouk Biesters (182-G/F-86) followed with one less. Quarters: 17-14, 32-8, 19-21, 20-4. On Saturday, Lithuania will meet Slovenia as a guest. Holland will take a rest this weekend.

Group D
Spain - Bulgaria 64-48
Spain and Bulgaria met last night in Round One of the 2013 EuroBasket Qualifications. Spain celebrated 64-48 victory getting 10 points from Cristina Ouvina (174-G-90) and Elisa Aguilar (177-G-76, agency: Josep and Nicolas, college: G.Washington). Anna Cruz (173-PG-86, agency: Josep and Nicolas) had 8 points and 6 rebounds. Eleven of twelve players in Spain managed to score yesterday, while all of them got a chance to play. In Bulgaria, Jaklin Zlatanova (190-F-88) shined with 12 points and 8 rebounds. Radoslava Bachvarova (183-F-87, agency: LBM Management, college: VCU) and Vera Perostiyska (196-C-82, college: FIU) posted 10 points each. Spain made plus 5 in the first ten minutes of the game and jumped to 30-16 until the halftime. Bulgaria answered after the breather cutting the margin below ten, but they were not able to resist in the last ten minutes (19-11) and Spain celebrated comfortable 64-48 win. Round Two of the qualifications is scheduled for Saturday. Spain will meet Sweden, while Bulgaria will take a rest. Romania and Germany are also participants of Group D. First two teams at the end of qualifications will advance to EuroBasket in France.

Romania - Sweden 66-59
Romania started the 2013 EuroBasket Qualifications with victory. They outplayed Sweden 66-59 on Wednesday improving to 1-0 score in Group D. Spain, Germany and Bulgaria also participate in this pool and they all fight for the first two places. First two teams will book a spot for the EuroBasket in France. Romania shined in the second half to win this game. They drained 33 points in 20 minutes, at the same time limiting Sweden to 22 pts. Annemarie Parau (175-G-84), Gabriela Marginean (182-F-87, college: Drexel) and Anca Sipos, stepped up for their team in the finish. Marginean had 26 points and 6 rebounds in this game. Parau scored 14 points and Anita Meszaros (190-C-88) netted five less. Visitors got 22 points from Frida Eldebrink (174-G-88, agency: Josep and Nicolas). Louice Halvarsson (189-C-89, agency: Josep and Nicolas) followed with double-double of 10 points and 11 rebs, while Elin Eldebrink (174-G-88, agency: Josep and Nicolas) stopped to 7 pts and 7 rebs. Quarters: 20-20, 13-17, 16-10, 17-12. Romania will play in Germany on Saturday, while Sweden waits Spain.

Group E
Finland - Luxembourg 114-54
Finland registered 60-point win in the first game of the 2013 EuroBasket Qualifications. They outplayed Luxembourg 114-54 in Vantaa on Wednesday improving to 1-0 score in Group E. Taru Tuukkanen (190-C-77, agency: Regeneracom Sports, college: Xavier) was the MVP of this meeting with valuation 38. She had 27 points and 12 rebounds for 29 minutes on the court. Tiina Sten (189-G/F-85, agency: Regeneracom Sports, college: St.John's) collected 20 points and 5 rebs, while Heta Korpivaara (186-G/F-84, agency: Regeneracom Sports, college: Seton Hall) scored 12 points. For the guests, Jill Bausch (176-G-87) scored 13 points and Nadia Mossong (182-F-86, college: E.Kentucky) added 10 pts, plus 5 boards. Finland dominated in all basketball elements and won each period of this game with at least 13-pts. Quarters: 28-14, 34-16, 26-13, 26-11. Finland will play in Greece next Saturday, while Luxembourg will host Latvia. Participant of this pool is also Italy.

Latvia - Italy 71-52
Latvia started the 2013 EuroBasket Qualifications in style. They blasted Italy 71-52 in the opener for 1-0 record in Group E. Latvia exploded in the last ten minutes to secure this comfortable victory. Italy was 2-points ahead after 20 minutes, but the home squad totally took control on them after the breather. Latvia made 16-11 in Q3 and closed the game with impressive 26-10 in the last ten minutes of play. Liene Jansone (191-F/C-81, college: Siena) was the leading player in victory with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Kristine Karklina (175-G-83, agency: Regeneracom Sports) (5 rebs) and Ieva Krastina (175-G/F-90, agency: LBM Management) netted 14 points each, while Anete Horelika (177-F-87, agency: Regeneracom Sports) followed them with 13 pts. In the loosing squad, Giorgia Sottana (177-G-88) delivered 18 points. Raffaella Masciadri (185-F-80) was their second scorer with just 7 pts (6 rebs). In the next game, Lavtia will meet Luxembourg on the road. Italy will skip Round 2 and will continue on June 20, when they will host Luxembourg as a part of Round 3.


2013 EuroBasket Qualifications begin tomorrow - Jun 11, 2012

Everything is set for the beginning of 2013 EuroBasket Qualifications. 25 teams will fight for 10 spots. There are five groups with five teams in each pool. Two best teams from each group will advance to EuroBasket Final Tournament in France. Croatia, Czech Republic, Great Britain, Russia, Turkey and France directly qualified for the final tournament.
Qualifications begin tomorrow. In the opening game Latvia will host Italy at 19:30h. Nine more games will be played on Wednesday. After that, teams will play again June 16 and June 20. Last round (10) of the Qualifications is scheduled for July 14.
