Head coach of the Spanish National Team, Sergio Scariolo announced 12 players for the EuroBasket 2009 in Poland. At the same time, Scariolo added three more players to start training with the team, in case they have to replace somebody. As Eurobasket announced almost 2 weeks ago, Pau Gasol (214-F/C-80) of Los Angeles Lakers (USA) will once again be with the Team Spain this summer. Ten players who won the Olympic Silver are again with the team. Jose Manuel Calderon (190-G-81) of Toronto Raptors (USA) wants to take a rest this summer and Carlos Jimenez (203-F-76) of Unicaja Malaga retired from NT. Instead of them, Carlos Cabezas (186-G-80) and Victor Claver joined Spain.

Team Spain is placed to Group B on EuroBasket 2009. Together with the Spaniards are Serbia, Great Britain and Slovenia. In the first meeting Spain ill meet Serbia, September 7. In Game 2, which is scheduled for the next day, Pau Gasol and his teammates will take on Great Britain and after that on Slovenia. The best three teams from four groups at the Preliminary Round will advance. In Qualifying Round we will have 2 groups with 6 teams and 4 best squads from each pool will reach the Quarterfinals. The Final Game of the EuroBasket 2009 is scheduled for September 20. Of course, the Spaniards hope to reach the Gold, which they were close to grab in the Final of EuroBasket 2007 against Russia, 60-59.

NBA guard Goran Dragic(190-PG-86) has confirmed he is retiring from the Slovenia team that won the European basketball championship. Dragic says on Tuesday, "I achieved what I wanted, the gold medal, and this is the right time to bid farewell."
