The game had a very big importance for third-ranked Hungarian Alba as it allowed them to take a leadership position in Group A. Alba smashed their biggest opponent Portuguese Benfica in Szekesfehervar 90-71. It was a key game for the top position in Group A. The game was mostly controlled by Alba. Benfica was better in second period 19-18. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. The winners were led by Canadian guard Justin Edwards (190-92, college: Kansas St.) who scored that evening 21 points, 5 rebounds and 8 assists and American forward Winston Shepard (203-93, college: San Diego St.) supported him with 18 points and 5 rebounds. Alba's coach allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. Even a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds by Cape Verdean-Portuguese forward Carlos Andrade (197-78, college: Queens, NC) did not help to save the game for Benfica. Angola-Portuguese guard Carlos Morais (200-85, agency: Duran International) added 8 points, 11 rebounds and 6 assists for lost side. As mentioned above they are at the top of the standings, which they share with Chalon. Benfica at the other side dropped to the third place with two games lost. Benfica will play next round against strong Chalon/Saor trying to get back on the winning streak. Alba will try to continue on its current victory against fourth ranked Basic-Fit Brussels on the road.
