Coach Levell Sanders: I prefer to focus more on the process of being a champion - Sep 25, 2017

Last season, BK JIP Pardubice was one the most fun to watch teams in Europe due their mixture of young guys and older players with experience. The kind of basketball that they showed in Czech Republic League and in the Fiba Europe Cup helped coach Levell Sanders to be named All-Czech Rep. League Coach of the Year 2017.

1.- How has Parduvice been so far?

I have been in BK JIP Pardubice for a few years now as a player and now as a coach and I like the city. I have adjusted well. It has that metropolitan feel to it. It's not such a big city but it feels like it. It has a mall here which reminds me of being in the states and I like that. It's close to Prague which I like. The team is ok we had a lot of injuries during the preseason but we finally have our team together. I'm looking forward to the practice so we can get a chance to know each and start to build something.

2.- As a coach.Who's been the biggest influence?

It's an interesting question because I haven't coached under anyone to really get a style from another coach. As a player I didn't really pay much attention to how coaches where conducting practices and that type of thing. Of course I was aware but I didn't take notes or anything like that. As I got older I noticed more once I realized I wanted to coach. My coaching style is basically how I feel the game and what I think my team can do to be successful. When I started to coach I wanted my teams to be aggressive on defense. Try to create turnovers so we can go in transition and get easy baskets. I want to limit teams to one contested shot and rebound the ball and again go in transition. I am a big believer in rebounding because for me it determines the out come of a lot of games. Offensively I want to play fast and score a lot of points. I want to play attractive basketball they people like to see and players like to play. But I think the most important is to make sure you have the type of players that fit your style. You will have to adjust your style from time to time depending on the type of players you have. I speak to Tommy Amaker a lot. He coached me my last year at Seton Hall University. He was the first person I called and spoke to when I was offered this job. So he has a big influence on my but not just as a coach but also as a human. There are a lot of coaches I like from a far. For example Chris Mack from Xavier University. I like his style being that he is a big believer in rebounding. Also the greats like Tom Izzo, Mike Krzyzewski or European Coaches like Zeljko Obradovic and Andrea Trinchieri

3.- What is your goal for the season?

I don't have a lot of the 'I want to win the championship' type of goals. I prefer to focus more on the process of being a champion! And to me it means coming everyday with a commitment to getting better, working hard, working smart, competing, taking care and doing your job every single day! So I rather focus on that. I still have the same mentality I had as a player. I always thought that if I did my best and the other guy did his best I would still come out on top. So I feel the same as a coach. If we prepare properly then I believe if we play our best it's good enough for whoever we are playing against.

4.-Your team is young but you are always in the top positions. What is the key?

BK JIP Pardubice is well known for their youth teams. They are able to get kids from all over the Czech Republic so it's the advantage they have. I think it's great to be able to work with these young guys. It's also good that since Dusan Bouhanicky started coaching the A-Team a few years ago he started to give these young kids a chance. It's important because giving these young guys a chance well help them and also the quality of the league. We have a mixture of young and older guys. I think having the older guys cause help the younger players know what it means to be professional. Having some of the foreigners on the team also can help these guys. I know on our team some younger guys go to the gym for extra work with the foreigners. So it's good we have the mixture. And I don't mind working with young players. I think I have a lot of information I can give them about the game and life.

5.- What can you tell us about your experience in the FIBA Europe Cup?

The experience in the Fiba Europe Cup last season was a good one. It was the first time in I think 5 years that the team competed in a international tournament. I hope the way we played and competed we represented Czech Basketball in a good light. We went 4-2 in the first stage to advance to the 2nd round. Then we went 2-4 but had a bunch of close games that could have gone either way. So again a really good experience for our team and club. I'm looking forward to this year even though it's a little different system. We have to go through 2 rounds of qualification which will be tough but hey it is what it is.
