The 25th Summer Universiade is taking place in Belgrade, Serbia (1.-12.7.2009). In basketball Finland defeated today South Korea 90-75 (47-33). Finland had six players in double figures. Vesa Makalainen (200-F-86) was the leading scorer and rebounder (15/13). Vesa's older brother Ville Makalainen (194-F-85, agency: Pro Partner Sports Management) added 15 pts and grabbed nine rbs. American G-F Chris Hester (192-G-79, college: E.Washington) will continue his basketball career in Finland. Hester and Pyrinto (Tampere) have re-signed for the coming 2009-2010 season and that means Hester will start and play his fourth season in Finland. Last season Hester averaged 17,5 ppg and 5,4 rpg in 46 games. Pasi Pekkola (195-F-81) (6,3 ppg) has re-signed with YMCA Lahti as well as Olli Kaunomaki (195-G/F-86) (1,1 ppg). Universiade team defeat U20 selection in Helsinki - Jun 27, 2009 (by Eurobasket News)

Finnish Universiade selection edged U20 National Team at the Baltic Cup in Helsinki. Juho Nenonen (202-F-87) scored 17 points and collected 8 rebounds to lead Finland to a 90:62 victory.
