Gerald Lee selected the top Finn playing abroad in last week's games - Dec 5, 2012

  follow us on Facebook Twitter

We bring you last week's top performances from Finns who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.

Gerald Lee
Gerald Lee
#1. This week's number one is an international center Gerald Lee (208-87, college: ODU, currently plays in Eurocup). He was the major contributor in Buducnost's victory against the closely-ranked Spirou Charleroi (0-5) 59-55 in the Eurocup in Wednesday night's game. Lee recorded 12 points and grabbed 8 rebounds in 27 minutes on the court. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. KK Buducnost Voli Podgorica (3-1) is placed second in the Eurocup. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. There are only two games left until the end of the Eurocup Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. It's Lee's first season with the team. He has relatively good stats this year: 10.8ppg, 5.5rpg and FT: 68.4% in the four games he played so far. Lee is a naturalized American. He is currently a member of the Finnish senior national team. Strangely Lee has never played in Finland.

Ville Kaunisto
Ville Kaunisto
#2. Second place goes to an international forward Ville Kaunisto (205-82, currently plays in France). He led Blois to a victory over the closely-ranked Cognac (8-3) 96-80 in the French NM1 (third division) last Tuesday. Kaunisto was MVP of the game. He recorded a double-double by scoring 33 points and getting 17 rebounds. ADA Blois Basket (7-3) is placed fifth in the NM1. They ended the series of three consecutive loses. But this is still an early stage of the season and everything may happen. Kaunisto is currently second on the league's list of top scorers and also on the list of best rebounders (first place). He has individually a very good season with high stats. Kaunisto averages: 17.9ppg, 11.2rpg, 1.9apg, 2FGP: 59.6%(62-104), 3FGP: 22.6% and FT: 59.6%. He is in the roster of the Finnish senior national team.

Sasu Salin
Sasu Salin
#3. The Finnish player who performed third best last week abroad was an international guard Sasu Salin (192-91, currently plays in Adriatic League). Salin contributed to Un.Olimpija's victory against the closely-ranked Cibona (4-7) 87-82 in the Adriatic League on Sunday night. He scored 8 points in 22 minutes. Union Olimpija Ljubljana (5-6) is placed ninth in the Adriatic League. Salin is currently second on the league's list of most steals with 1.9spg. This year his other stats are: 6.8ppg, 3.2rpg, 2FGP: 44.4%, 3FGP: 31.1% and FT: 71.4% in the 10 games. Salin is also a member of the Finnish senior national team.

Teemu Rannikko
Teemu Rannikko
#4. Point guard Teemu Rannikko (189-80, currently plays in Euroleague) is a teammate of previously mentioned Sasu Salin. But that was another game of his team in Euroleague which we would like to mention. Rannikko, who plays in Slovenia could not help Un.Olimpija (2-6) to beat Panathinaikos (5-3). He scored 5 points. The fifth-placed Un.Olimpija was defeated 80-72 on the road by the higher-ranked Panathinaikos (#3) in the group A of Euroleague. Rannikko's overall stats this season are: 2.9ppg and 2.5apg. He is also Finnish national team player.

Roope Ahonen
Roope Ahonen
#5. International guard Roope Ahonen (186-90, agency: FCM, currently plays in Sweden), who plays in the Swedish Basketligan was not able to help Solna Vikings (8-7) in their last game. Despite Ahonen's very good performance Solna Vikings lost 76-91 in Norrkoping to the higher-ranked (#4) Dolphins. He was the second best scorer with 15 points in 31 minutes. This year Ahonen has relatively solid stats: 10.5ppg, 1.9rpg and 3.7apg in the 15 games. He plays currently for the Finnish national team.

Alex Murphy
Alex Murphy
#6. Forward Alex Murphy (203-93, currently plays college basketball in the States) contributed to an easy victory against the University of Delaware crushing them 88-50 in the NCAA on Saturday night. Murphy scored 10 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. The Duke University has conference record this season. Murphy has reliable stats this year: 10.5ppg, 1.9rpg and 3.7apg. He is a naturalized American. Murphy is U20 international player who is currently on the Finnish National Team roster. Apparently he has never played in Finland.

Shawn Huff
Shawn Huff
#7. International small forward Shawn Huff (198-84, college: Valparaiso, currently plays in Italy) managed to help Vanoli Cremona in a victory against the closely-ranked Umana Venezia (3-7) 92-88 in the Italian SerieA in Sunday night's game. Huff recorded only 2 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in 18 minutes. Vanoli Cremona (3-7) is placed 11th in the SerieA. It was his team's first victory after four consecutive loses. But the season just started, so everything may happen. This year Huff's overall stats are: 4.9ppg and 4.1rpg in the 10 games. He is also Finnish national team player.

Joonas Caven
Joonas Caven
#8. Power forward Joonas Caven (211-93, currently plays in Spain) contributed to a Prat Juventud's victory against the closely-ranked Aurteneche Maquinaria Euskadi (4-3) 84-72 in the Spanish LEB Silver (third division) last Saturday. Caven scored 8 points. CB Prat Juventud (4-4) is placed seventh in the LEB Silver. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. Caven's total stats this season are: 7.3ppg and 2.7rpg. He plays currently for the Finnish U20 national team.

Kilian Cato
Kilian Cato
#9. U20 international forward Kilian Cato (201-92, currently studies in the States) helped Maine win their game against the Northeastern University 76-73 in the NCAA on Wednesday night. Cato scored only 2 points in 13 minutes. The University of Maine has conference record this season. This year Cato's total stats are: 7.3ppg and 2.7rpg in the seven games. He is also in the roster of the Finnish U20 national team.

Lauri Toivonen
Lauri Toivonen
#10. Forward Lauri Toivonen (201-91, is currently at the American university) was not able to secure a victory for the UTPA in their game against the University of Texas at Arlington (0-0) in the NCAA. Toivonen cannot count Monday's game as one of the best ones. He recorded only 2 points. The UTPA was defeated 60-51 at home by the University of Texas at Arlington. Toivonen has averaged so far 7.3ppg and 2.7rpg. He is university international player as one years ago he still played for the Finnish national team.
