Sami Syrjala
31-year old forward Sami Syrjala (197-F-81) had a great game in the last round for league's best team KaU Koris and receives a Eurobasket.com 1st Division Player of the Week award for round 14.
He had a double-double of 19 points and 16 rebounds, while his team outclassed Kerava ET (#3, 9-5) with 26-point margin 92-66. It allowed KaU Koris to consolidate first place in the Finnish 1st Division. They would have been even better if they hadn't lost a few games earlier this season. KaU Koris has a very solid 11-5 record, but they cannot be too comfortable about keeping top position. It's Syrjala's second year at KaU Koris and it's hard to imagine this team without him. Syrjala has impressive league stats. He is in league's top in rebounds (4th best: 12.1rpg) and averages solid 61.5% FGP.

Second best performed player last round was Nafis Ricks (188-G) of BC Jyvaskyla. He is American guard in his first season at BC Jyvaskyla. In the last game Ricks recorded impressive double-double of 27 points and 13 rebounds. It was enough for BC Jyvaskyla to edge slightly lower-ranked Espoo Basket (#8, 3-11) by 3 points 88-85. This victory allowed BC Jyvaskyla to move up to 6th position in group B. His team is not often considered as one of the league's best with a mere 6-10 record. Ricks is a newcomer at BC Jyvaskyla and quickly became one of team's most reliable players. He belongs to the best scorers in the league with 22.8ppg (#3). His other stats are also decent: 9.3rpg and 4.8apg.

Third place about best performers goes to Kraidon Woods (205-C/F-88) of BC Nokia (#4). Woods scored 18 points and grabbed eleven rebounds (!!!). He was a key player of BC Nokia, leading his team to a 90-71 easy win against slightly lower-ranked Tapiolan Honka (#5, 7-6). BC Nokia needs these victories very badly if they think about getting closer to top teams in group A. Their record at this point is 7 victories and 5 lost games. Woods has a very solid season. In 11 games in Finland he scored 13.5ppg. He also has 8.1rpg, 1.8bpg and FGP: 69.7%.

Other top performing players last week:
4. Tomi Sakala (203-C-80) of KaU Koris - 28 points and 13 rebounds
5. Sami Syrjala (197-F-81) of KaU Koris - 20 points, 12 rebounds and 4 assists
6. Visa Tarjanne (193-F-93) of Jarvenpaa - 40 points, 8 rebounds and 2 assists
7. Joonas Suotamo (209-F/C-86) of Espoo Basket - 23 points, 14 rebounds and 3 assists
8. Antonio Hester (198-F) of TuNMKY - 13 points, 18 rebounds and 5 assists
9. Mika Nuolivirta (210-C-94) of HBA-Marsky - 24 points and 6 rebounds
10. Vernon Taylor (190-G-87) of Porvoon Tarmo - 25 points and 5 rebounds

The Player of the week is choosen based on efficiency calculation, but also including game result, importance of the game, if played recorded double-double/triple-double, etc.
The efficiency formula is a combination of various formulas used by different basketball organizations/leagues. We got involved many basketball scouts and journalists to assure it's accuracy.
The formula: 1.5*PTS + 3*(REB+AST+ST+BL-TO) - 2*BSAG - 4*PF + 3*PFRV + 4*(2FGPM+3FGPM) + 1.5*FTM - 3*(2FGPA-2FGPM) - 3*(3FGPA-3FGPM) - (FTA-FTM)

Petteri Koponen selected the top Finn playing abroad in last week's games - 3 days ago
Traditionally, every week we bring you a list of the top performances of Finns who are currently playing abroad. This week's number one is an international point guard Petteri Koponen (194-88). He could not help FC Barcelona (7-10) in their last game. Despite Koponen's very good performance the 12th-placed FC Barcelona (7-10) was edged 69-67 at home by the much higher-ranked (#3) Olympiacos in the group A of Euroleague.    [read more]

Antwan Scott (ex Dukes UDB) agreed terms with KTP Basket - 3 days ago
KTP Basket Kotka (Korisliiga) strengthened their roster with addition of 25-year old American guard Antwan Scott (188-81kg-92, college: Colorado State). He played recently at Dukes Unlimited Den Bosch in Dutch Eredivisie, but left the team earlier this month.
