SM-sarja Round 22: HoNsU edges Forssan Alku by two points - Jan 12, 2013

The most exciting game of round 22 in the SM-sarja took place in Forssa. This derby game ended with only two-point home defeat of higher ranked Forssan Alku (12-5) to seventh ranked HoNsU (9-8) 79-77 on Saturday evening. American guard Brandi Davis (183-83, college: Oregon) fired 17 points and 7 assists for the winners. The former international forward Minna Sten (189-87) chipped in 11 points and 13 rebounds. HoNsU's coach Tuomas Oja used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. American forward Secily Ray (180-90, college: Wake Forest) produced a double-double by scoring 14 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists for lost side. HoNsU moved-up to sixth place, which they share with Huima. Forssan Alku at the other side keeps the third position with five games lost. HoNsU is looking forward to face bottom-ranked HyPo (#11) in Hyvinkaa in the next round where they are favorite. Forssan Alku will play on the road against the league's second-placed Peli-Karhut (#2) in Kotka and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
An exciting game between Top Four teams was played in Lappeenranta. First ranked Catz Lappeenranta faced 4th ranked Torpan Pojat. Host Catz Lappeenranta (15-2) smashed guests from Helsinki (11-7) 68-42. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Torpan Pojat. Worth to mention a great performance of American Chandrea Jones (175-87, college: Syracuse, agency: LBM Management) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 18 points and 11 rebounds. Alexandria Anderson contributed with 12 points and 9 rebounds for the winners. The former international power forward Niina Laaksonen (185-85) replied with a double-double by scoring 19 points and 17 rebounds for Torpan Pojat. Catz Lappeenranta have a solid three-game winning streak. Defending champion maintains first position with 15-2 record. Torpan Pojat at the other side keeps the fourth place with seven games lost. Catz Lappeenranta will play against BC Nokia (#10) on the road in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Torpan Pojat will have a break next round.

Loser Kerava Energia Team keeps the eighth place with 11 games lost. HyPo will meet higher ranked HoNsU (#7) in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Kerava Energia Team will play against Aanekosken in Aanekoski and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Peli-Karhut maintains second position with 13-4 record having just two points less than leader Catz. Newly promoted TuRi keeps the ninth place with 13 games lost. Peli-Karhut's next round opponent will be Forssan Alku (#3) at home, which may be the game of the day.

In the last game of round 22 BC Nokia was defeated by Huima in Aanekoski 65-54.
The best stats of 22th round was 18 points and 15 rebounds by Phebe Smith of HyPo.



HyPo - Kerava 72-66

Bottom-ranked HyPo managed to get a second victory, breaking the fourteen-game losing streak on Saturday night. This time newly promoted HyPo won against eighth-ranked Kerava Energia Team in Hyvinkaa 72-66. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Kerava Energia Team. The hosts trailed by 17 points after first quarter, but they rallied back and won the game by 6 points. They outrebounded Kerava Energia Team 57-32 including a 34-19 advantage in defensive rebounds. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when HyPo made 8 blocks. U.S. Virgin Islands-American swingman Natalie Day (182-90, college: Portland) had a double-double by scoring 23 points and 15 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners and American forward Phebe Smith (183, college: Columbus St., agency: Gamble Sports Management) chipped in 18 points and 15 rebounds during the contest. At the losing side American guard Earlysia Marchbanks (180, college: Oregon St., agency: Interperformances) responded with a double-double by scoring 12 points, 12 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 steals and Italian-Ghanian guard Rosetta Adzasu (165-90, college: Washington St.) scored 11 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists and 8 steals. Five Kerava Energia Team players scored in double figures. Newly promoted HyPo maintains eleventh position with 2-15 record. Loser Kerava Energia Team keeps the eighth place with 11 games lost. HyPo will meet higher ranked HoNsU (#7) in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Kerava Energia Team will play against Aanekosken in Aanekoski and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Huima - BC Nokia 65-54

There was no surprise in Aanekoski where 10th ranked BC Nokia (3-15) was defeated by sixth ranked Aanekosken (9-8) 65-54. The game was mostly controlled by Aanekosken. BC Nokia was better in fourth quarter 16-15. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They outrebounded BC Nokia 47-29 including a 37-17 advantage in defensive rebounds. American swingman Jasmin Holliday (182-90, college: Oregon) notched a double-double by scoring 19 points and 16 rebounds to lead the effort and the other American import center Kenya Robinson (182-70, college: New Orleans) supported her with 12 points and 14 rebounds. Even 9 points and 9 rebounds by American forward Alberta Auguste (180-85, college: Tennessee) did not help to save the game for BC Nokia. Forward Nina Hyvarinen (175-80) added 12 points and 6 rebounds for lost side. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Aanekosken maintains sixth position with 9-8 record, which they share with HoNsU. Newly promoted BC Nokia keeps the tenth place with 15 games lost. Aanekosken's next round opponent will be Kerava Energia Team (#8) at home. BC Nokia will play against the league's leader Catz Lappeenranta.

American swingman Korinne Campbell (182-88, college: W.Virginia) notched a double-double by scoring 19 points and 13 rebounds (made all of her seven free throws) to lead the effort and the other American import forward Shenita Landry (188-87, college: Temple) supported her with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Five Peli-Karhut players scored in double figures. Even a double-double of 26 points and 11 rebounds by American forward Callan Taylor (182-90, college: Sacred Heart) did not help to save the game for TuRi.
