SM-sarja Round 23: Peli-Karhut defeats Forssan Alku in the game between Top 4 teams - Jan 13, 2013

An interesting game for Peli-Karhut (14-4) which hosted in Kotka 3rd placed Forssan Alku (12-6). Second ranked Peli-Karhut had an easy win 94-47. The game without a history. Peli-Karhut led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They dominated down low during the game scoring 54 of its points in the paint compared to Forssan Alku's 30. Peli-Karhut forced 24 Forssan Alku turnovers and outrebounded Forssan Alku 47-34 including 17 on the offensive glass. American players dominated the game. Swingman Korinne Campbell (182-88, college: W.Virginia) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 20 points and 11 rebounds. Forward Shenita Landry (188-87, college: Temple) contributed with 15 points and 15 rebounds for the winners. Peli-Karhut's coach Seppo Kurki felt very confident using 10 players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Forward Secily Ray (180-90, college: Wake Forest) answered with a double-double by scoring 11 points and 12 rebounds for Forssan Alku. Peli-Karhut have a solid series of three victories in a row. They maintain second place with 14-4 record having just two points less than leader Catz. Forssan Alku lost third consecutive game. Forssan Alku at the other side keeps the third position with six games lost. Peli-Karhut are looking forward to face bottom-ranked HyPo (#11) in Hyvinkaa in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Forssan Alku will play at home against Honka (#5) in Espoo and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
SM-sarja top team - Catz Lappeenranta (16-2) had no problems winning another game. This time they crushed tenth ranked BC Nokia (3-16) 85-66. It was a great evening for American Chandrea Jones (175-87, college: Syracuse, agency: LBM Management) who led her team to a victory scoring 26 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals. Jelena Reshetko helped adding 23 points and 9 rebounds (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field). American forward Alberta Auguste (180-85, college: Tennessee) responded with 12 points and 9 rebounds. Catz Lappeenranta have a solid series of four victories in a row. Defending champion maintains first place with 16-2 record. Newly promoted BC Nokia keeps the tenth position with 16 games lost. Catz Lappeenranta will play against Kerava Energia Team (#8) at home in the next round and are hoping to win another game. BC Nokia will play against Torpan Pojat in Helsinki and hopes to get back on the winning track.

In the last two games of round 23 Kerava was beaten by Huima on the road 70-63. HoNsU won against HyPo on its own court 60-44.
The most impressive performance of 23th round was 26 points, 16 rebounds and 5 blocks by Minna Sten of HoNsU.


Huima - Kerava 70-63

No shocking result in a game when sixth ranked Aanekosken (10-8) beat 8th ranked Kerava Energia Team (6-12) in Aanekoski 70-63. It looked good early as Kerava Energia Team took an 16-point lead at the end of first quarter. But then Aanekosken took control and eventually winning the game that evening by 7 points. They made 22-of-23 charity shots (95.7 percent) during the game. Aanekosken forced 27 Kerava Energia Team turnovers and outrebounded them 44-33 including 17 on the offensive glass. It was a great evening for American center Kenya Robinson (182-70, college: New Orleans) who led her team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 20 points, 12 rebounds and 6 assists (was perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line). Guard Salla Viitanen (167-87) helped adding 18 points and 5 rebounds. Italian-Ghanian guard Rosetta Adzasu (165-90, college: Washington St.) responded with a double-double by scoring 19 points, 11 rebounds, 7 assists and 9 steals and American guard Earlysia Marchbanks (180, college: Oregon St., agency: Interperformances) scored 19 points and 8 rebounds. Aanekosken maintains sixth place with 10-8 record, which they share with HoNsU. Kerava Energia Team at the other side keeps the eighth position with 12 games lost. Aanekosken will play against HoNsU (#7) in Jyvaskyla in the next round. Kerava Energia Team will play on the road against the league's leader Catz Lappeenranta and hopes to get back on the winning track.

Very expected game when 11th ranked HyPo (2-16) lost to seventh ranked HoNsU (10-8) in Jyvaskyla 44-60. The game without a history. HoNsU led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They held HyPo to an opponent 23.6 percent shooting from the field compared to 33.8 percent accuracy of the winners. HoNsU forced 19 HyPo turnovers. They brought some defensive toughness making 8 blocks. It was a great evening for the former international forward Minna Sten (189-87) who led her team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 26 points, 16 rebounds and 5 blocks. American guard Brandi Davis (183-83, college: Oregon) helped adding 16 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. American forward Phebe Smith (183, college: Columbus St., agency: Gamble Sports Management) responded with a double-double by scoring 19 points and 24 rebounds and the other American import forward Kathlyn Varno (185-88, college: Wofford) produced a double-double by scoring 10 points and 15 rebounds.
