American Melissa Jeltema (175-G-88) had a very impressive game in the last round for Honka and that's her to receive a Player of the Week award for round 25.
The 24-year old guard had the game-high 42 points adding seven rebounds for Honka in her team's victory, helping them to crush HyPo (#11, 2-18) with 18-point margin 99-81. Honka maintains the 4th position in Finnish SM-sarja. They would have been even better if they hadn't lost a few games earlier this season. Honka will need more victories to improve their 13-7 record. In the team's last game Jeltema had a remarkable 58.8% from 2-point range and got six three-pointers out of 9 attempts. She turned to be Honka's top player in her first season with the team. Oakland University graduate has very impressive stats this year. Jeltema is league's best scorer averaging so far 27.7ppg. Jeltema is in league's top in and averages solid 1.2bpg,2.8spg and 44.6% from behind 3-point line.

The second most remarkable performance in last round's games was -year old American forward Phebe Smith (183-F, agency: Gamble Sports Management) of HyPo. Smith impressed basketball fans with a double-double of 24 points and 27 rebounds. Bad luck as HyPo lost that game 81-99 to the higher-ranked Honka (#4, 13-7). HyPo are still at the very bottom. 18 lost games are too many comparing to just two victories HyPo managed to get this year. Smith is a newcomer at HyPo and it seems she did not have too much trouble to become one of team's leaders.

The third best performed player last round was former international forward Niina Laaksonen (185-F/C-85) of ToPo (#5). Laaksonen scored 26 points and grabbed twelve rebounds (!!!). She was a key player of ToPo, leading her team to a 86-82 win against the lower-ranked Kerava (#8, 6-14). ToPo needs these victories very badly if they think about getting closer to top teams. Their record at this point is 13 victories and 7 lost games. Laaksonen has a great season in Finland. After 20 games, she made it on the list of the league's leaders in points with 22.1ppg (2nd best) and rebounds with 14.9rpg (#1 in league).

Other top performing players last week:
4. Earlysia Marchbanks (180-G) of Kerava - 22 points, 20 rebounds and 4 assists
5. Secily Ray (180-F-90) of FoA - 17 points, 12 rebounds and 3 assists
6. Shenita Landry (188-F-87) of PeKa - 17 points and 8 rebounds
7. Minna Sten (189-F-87) of HoNsU - 12 points and 11 rebounds
8. Jordan Murphree (183-G-87) of Honka - 20 points, 11 rebounds and 6 assists
9. Chandrea Jones (175-SF-87) of Catz - 6 points, 11 rebounds and 7 assists
10. Kenya McBee (192-C-83) of ToPo - 24 points and 7 rebounds

The Player of the week is choosen based on efficiency calculation, but also including game result, importance of the game, if played recorded double-double/triple-double, etc.
The efficiency formula is a combination of various formulas used by different basketball organizations/leagues. We got involved many basketball scouts and journalists to assure it's accuracy.
The formula: 1.5*PTS + 3*(REB+AST+ST+BL-TO) - 2*BSAG - 4*PF + 3*PFRV + 4*(2FGPM+3FGPM) + 1.5*FTM - 3*(2FGPA-2FGPM) - 3*(3FGPA-3FGPM) - (FTA-FTM)

SM-sarja Round 4 of Regular Season - 7 days ago

After 4 rounds played we can already see who rules in the SM-sarja and who belongs to weaker ones. The most shocking disappointment of round 4 was a home defeat of 3rd ranked ViVe (2-2) to fourth ranked HyPo (3-1) 86-82. It ended the two-game winning streak of ViVe. It was a key game for the second position in the league. The guests took control from the first minutes by winning the initial quarter 22-18. But ViVe won second period 15-14. However it was not enough to take a lead and get...   [read more]
