EuroChallenge, Last 16, Group I: CS Gaz Metan Medias, # 8 in Top League in Romania right now, was ahead by 13 points (49-62) vs Kataja (Finland) at Joensuu, when the 4th quarter got started, but Kataja never gave up. 17-0 run in six minutes for Kataja and digits 54-64 were changed into 71-64! Kataja had to win by three or more and 79-75 victory was a sweet one for the hosts. Metan Medias was leading during the half time 26-39. Quarters: 17-22, 9-17, 23-23, 30-13.
Kataja made the Romanian Pro Team seem during the last quarter like a bunch of nervous beginners on the basketball court. Turnovers after turnovers and even time outs didn't help much. Kataja was leading already 72-66 (time 37:28) and 76-72 (39:26), but the visitors made the contest a 2-point-game 76-74 with 10 seconds on the clock. Metan Medias had won over Kataja by two at home, but obviously a two-point loss was not enough and Metan Medias made still some fouls. Kataja enlarged the victory then into four points from the charity stripe.
Johnell Smith (180-PG-80, college: New Orleans) scored nine points for Kataja already during the opening quarter. Later Jonte Flowers (196-F/G-85, agency: Warren Sports International, college: Winona St.), Antti Kanervo (193-SG-89), Daniel Coleman (206-F-85, college: Minnesota) and Sami Lehtoranta (205-PF-79) were Kataja's key players, who arranged the important win for the hosts.
CS Gaz Metan Medias had 20 turnovers, American G Kyle Shiloh (191-PG-85, college: Nevada) scored only three points in 28:25 minutes, Serbian Aleksandar Mladenovic (207-F/C-84, agency: BeoExcell) played only 23:36 minutes and sharpshooter Ivan Lilov (196-SG-88) from Bulgaria was in foul troubles at the end. Very important victory for Kataja and now the door is still open to the Final 8.
Kataja - Metan Medias 79-75 (26-39). (Jonte Flowers 16, Dan Coleman 14/11, Antti Kanervo 14, Sami Lehtoranta 11. 1 - 68,4% (13/19), 2 - 50,0% (21/42), 3 - 42,1% (8/19). R: 24+8=32. TO: 16. - Ivan Lilov 18, Aleksandar Mladenovic 12, Slobodan Dundjerski 11. 1 - 54,5% (6/11), 2 - 73,0% (27/37), 3 - 22,7% (5/22). R: 25+6=31. TO: 20).

19.2.: Pinar Karsiyaka - BK Ventspils 84-75 (51-34). (PK: Abdul Aminu 16, Robert Dixon 15 - V: Donald Sims 16, Arturs Berzins 12).
1) Pinar Karsiyaka (Turkey) 4-1, 2) BK Ventspils (Latvia) 2-3, 3) Kataja (Finland) 2-3, 4) CS Gaz Metan Medias (Romania) 2-3. The last games (26.2.): Kataja - Pinar Karsiyaka and Metan Medias - BK Ventspils.
