Korisliiga Round 27: Salon Vilpas defeat Joensuun Kataja in the closest game of the week - Feb 2, 2017

The most exciting game of round 27 in the Korisliiga took place in Joensuu. This derby game ended with only three-point home defeat of 3rd placed Joensuun Kataja (14-8) to second ranked Salon Vilpas (18-6) 68-65 on Wednesday evening. Joensuun Kataja was tied after three quarters but could not keep up in the last quarter eventually losing the game. It was a great evening for American point guard Juwan Staten (185-92, college: W.Virginia) who led his team to a victory scoring 15 points and 5 rebounds. His fellow American import forward Brandon Edwards (198-91, college: Texas Arlington) helped adding 13 points and 7 rebounds. The best for the losing side was Canadian guard Daniel Mullings (188-91, college: N.Mexico St.) with a double-double by scoring 15 points and 11 rebounds. Salon Vilpas maintains second place with 18-6 record having just one point less than leader Helsinki Seagulls. Joensuun Kataja at the other side dropped to the fourth position with eight games lost. Salon Vilpas will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Joensuun Kataja will play on the road against the league's leader Helsinki Seagulls (#1) and is hoping to prove to their supporters that this time they can win.

It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Kouvot. It was an exceptional evening for Senegalese forward Papa Dia (208-87, college: SMU) who led the winners with a double-double by scoring 22 points and 12 rebounds. Sefton Barrett accounted for 18 points and 6 rebounds. American guard Steven Pledger (193-90, college: Oklahoma) came up with 19 points for Kouvot in the defeat. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. BC Nokia maintains seventh place with 10-15 record. Defending champion Kouvot keeps the sixth position with 13 games lost. BC Nokia will play against Tampereen Pyrinto (#9) on the road in the next round. Kouvot will play against Kauhajoen Karhu and hopes to get back on the winning track.

Americans were the main players on the court. The best player for the winners was Austin Hollins who scored 19 points and 4 assists. At the other side the best for losing team was Gary Johnson who recorded 15 points (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field). The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Kauhajoen Karhu have a solid series of three victories in a row. They moved-up to third place. UU-Korihait lost twelfth consecutive game. Newly promoted team stay dead last with 20 lost games. Kauhajoen Karhu will meet Kouvot (#6) in the next round. UU-Korihait will have a break next round.

In the last game of round 27 Pyrinto was destroyed by KTP Basket on the opponent's court 92-72.

KTP Basket - Pyrinto 92-72

We cannot really consider it an upset in the game between close teams in Kotka where 8th ranked Tampereen Pyrinto (9-16) was crushed by ninth ranked KTP-Basket (9-16) 92-72 on Wednesday. The game without a history. KTP-Basket led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists. The best player for the winners was American Monyea Pratt (196-85, college: Stillman, agency: Court Side) who scored 29 points and 9 assists. His fellow American import guard Daniel Bailey (196-90, college: Queens, NC) chipped in 20 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Four KTP-Basket players scored in double figures. At the other side the best for losing team was the former international Petri Heinonen (207-88) who recorded 14 points and 5 rebounds and American forward J'Nathan Bullock (196-87, college: Cleveland St.) added 7 points and 12 rebounds respectively. KTP-Basket moved-up to eighth place, which they share with Pyrinto. KTP-Basket will meet higher ranked Lapuan Korikobrat (#5) on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Tampereen Pyrinto will play against BC Nokia and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Important game to mention about took place in Nokia. Seventh ranked BC Nokia (10-15) saved a 2-point victory at home edging 6th ranked Kouvot (10-13) 78-76 on Wednesday evening. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Kouvot. It looked good early as Kouvot took a 11-point lead at the end of first quarter. But then BC Nokia took control winning two of next three quarters and eventually winning the game that evening by 2 points. They made 20-of-22 charity shots (90.9 percent) during the game. It was an exceptional evening for Senegalese forward Papa Dia (208-87, college: SMU) who led the winners with a double-double by scoring 22 points and 12 rebounds. Canadian Sefton Barrett (196-83, college: Cent.Michigan, agency: Blacktop Management) accounted for 18 points and 6 rebounds for the winning side.
