The Regular Season in 1st Division is slowly approaching the end. But there may be still some important changes in the final standings in the last 3 rounds.

Sixth-ranked Porvoon Tarmo (10-13) made lots of trouble for third ranked ToPo (15-8) on Sunday. The visitors from Helsinki managed to secure only three-point victory 71-68. However their fans expected easier game. The guests trailed by 5 points after first quarter, but they rallied back to get the 8-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 71-68. ToPo dominated on the defensive end, holding Porvoon Tarmo to just 6 points in third quarter. The best player for the winners was Gambian power forward Pierre Jallow (203-79, college: William Jewell) who had a double-double by scoring 21 points and 11 rebounds. American swingman Nigel Moore (195-81, college: Alabama A&M) chipped in 16 points. American guard Cameron Clark (190-93, college: Southwestern, KS) produced 21 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists for the hosts. Newly promoted ToPo maintains third position in Division with 15-8 record having four points less than leader TuNMKY. Porvoon Tarmo at the other side keeps the sixth place with 13 games lost. ToPo are looking forward to face league's leader Lahti at home in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. An exciting game between Top Four teams was played in Jyvaskyla. First ranked Lahti faced 4th ranked Jyvaskyla BA. Guests from Lahti (19-4) defeated host Jyvaskyla BA (12-11) 79-66. American guard Rashad Smith (201-93, college: Tulsa, agency: Diamond Sports) orchestrated the victory by scoring 30 points and 8 rebounds. Jerald Fields contributed with 11 points and 8 rebounds for the winners. Lahti's coach Arttu Mannelin allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. Guard Chrysostom Chukwuma (190-96) replied with 18 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists for Jyvaskyla BA. Lahti maintains first position in Division with 19-4 record. Newly promoted Jyvaskyla BA dropped to the fifth place with 11 games lost. Lahti will play against ToPo (#3) in Helsinki in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Jyvaskyla BA will play at home against Porvoon Tarmo and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Leader TuNMKY delivered the nineteenth victory on Sunday night. This time they crushed 7th ranked Raholan Pyrkiva (12-10) 114-73 in Turun. Worth to mention a quality performance of Mikael Sandberg who helped to win the game recording a triple-double by scoring 20 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists. Tommi Rasi responded with 21 points and 6 rebounds. TuNMKY maintains first position in Division with 19-4 record. Loser Raholan Pyrkiva keeps the seventh place with ten games lost. TuNMKY will meet at home Munkkiniemen (#11) in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Raholan Pyrkiva will play against Korikouvot (#4) and hope to secure a win.
We should mention about the upset which took place in Jarvenpaa, where higher ranked Jyvaskyla BA (12-11) lost to ninth ranked Jarvenpaa (8-15) in a road game 63-76. The winners were led by Arsene Towa who had that evening a double-double by scoring 25 points, 23 rebounds and 5 assists. Jarvenpaa moved-up to seventh place in Division. Newly promoted Jyvaskyla BA dropped to the fifth position with 11 games lost. Jarvenpaa's next round opponent will be Pyrinto II (#10) in Tampere. Jyvaskyla BA will play at home against Porvoon Tarmo (#6) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Rest of the games of round 20 were quite predictable and ended without any surprises. Here they are:
In Division FoKoPo was defeated by Oulun NMKY in a road game 90-76. FoKoPo was beaten by Pyrinto II at home 81-96. PeU-Basket lost to HNMKY U23 on the opponent's court 82-99. PuHu Juniorit outscored JyWe in a home game 104-79. Karkkila was rolled over Korikouvot on the road 87-107. HyPo defeated Munkkiniemen on its own court 85-80. Ura Basket beat Namika Lr in Kaarina 86-68.

Forssan Koripojat was better in second period 23-20. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Oulun NMKY players were unselfish on offense dishing 23 assists. The winners were led by American guard Zach Stahl (196, college: Northeastern, agency: Pro Partner Sports Management) who had that evening a double-double by scoring 18 points, 11 rebounds and 9 assists and the other American import forward Demondre Harvey (201-93, college: La-Monroe) supported him with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Even a double-double of 19 points and 12 rebounds by American forward Bruce Reed (202-90, college: Pikeville) did not help to save the game for Forssan Koripojat. Not a big story in a game in Kouvola where 10th ranked Karkkila (6-16) was outplayed by fourth ranked Korikouvot (15-7) 107-87. Korikouvot outrebounded Karkkila 50-28 including a 20-7 advantage in offensive rebounds. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 25 assists. The winners were led by swingman Teemu Knihtinen (195-98) who had that evening a double-double by scoring 24 points, 12 rebounds and 6 assists and guard Valtteri Leino (181-95) supported him with 38 points (!!!). Korikouvot's coach Kari Kurronen used entire bench which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Even a double-double of 26 points, 5 rebounds and 10 assists by point guard Janne Kinnunen (185-87) did not help to save the game for Karkkila. Swingman Hannes Koskinen (198-98) added 25 points and 6 rebounds for the guests. Five Karkkila players scored in double figures. Korikouvot maintains fourth position in Division with 15-7 record. Karkkila at the other side keeps the tenth place with 16 games lost. Korikouvot's next round opponent will be Raholan Pyrkiva (#7) in Tampere. Karkkila will play on the road against Espoo Basket and hope to win that game.

Leader TuNMKY delivered the nineteenth victory on Sunday night. This time they crushed 7th ranked Raholan Pyrkiva (12-10) 114-73 in Turun. The game without a history. TuNMKY led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. TuNMKY outrebounded Raholan Pyrkiva 47-31 including a 18-7 advantage in offensive rebounds. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 32 assists comparing to just 15 passes made by Raholan Pyrkiva's players. Worth to mention a quality performance of center Mikael Sandberg (210-91) who helped to win the game recording a triple-double by scoring 20 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists and swingman Timka Jaakkola (192-94) who added 23 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists during the contest. Guard Tommi Rasi (184-98) responded with 21 points and 6 rebounds and swingman Antti Keski-Koukkari (192-90) scored 10 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists. Both teams had five players each who scored in double figures. TuNMKY maintains first position in Division with 19-4 record. Loser Raholan Pyrkiva keeps the seventh place with ten games lost. TuNMKY will meet at home Munkkiniemen (#11) in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Raholan Pyrkiva will play against Korikouvot (#4) and hope to secure a win.

HyPo - Munkkiniemen 85-80

Everything went according to plan in Hyvinkaa where sixth ranked HyPo (13-9) won against 11th ranked Munkkiniemen (5-17) 85-80. However just five-point win is not that big difference and the fans of host team counted on more convincing victory. The hosts were already 16 points ahead at halftime and as many as 19 after three quarters before a 41-27 last quarter charge of Munkkiniemen cut the lead to 85-80 at the end of the game. HyPo players were unselfish on offense dishing 22 assists. 28 personal fouls committed by Munkkiniemen helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. The winners were led by forward Ilkka Blomqvist (196-84) who had that evening a double-double by scoring 11 points, 13 rebounds and 4 assists and Bashkim Grepi supported him with 13 points and 7 assists. Even 19 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists by guard Miika Heinonen (193-99) did not help to save the game for Munkkiniemen. Center Eetu Lahdetniemi (205-0) added 14 points for the guests. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. HyPo maintains sixth position in Division with 13-9 record. Namika Lr - Ura Basket 68-86

There was no surprise in Lappeenranta where 12th ranked Namika Lr (5-17) was defeated by third ranked Ura Basket (17-5) 86-68. It looked good early as Namika Lr took a 1-point small lead at the end of first quarter. But then Ura Basket had a 24-9 second period charge getting the lead and Namika Lr was not able to take back game control losing it eventually 68-86. They outrebounded Namika Lr 44-32 including 17 on the offensive glass. Ura Basket players were unselfish on offense dishing 22 assists comparing to just 8 passes made by Namika Lr's players. The winners were led by American forward Sean Harris (201, college: Utah St.) who had that evening a double-double by scoring 19 points, 14 rebounds and 4 assists and the other American import guard Jermaine Watson (193-81, college: Boston Coll.) supported him with 17 points and 8 rebounds. Worth to mention Watson played also at Eurobasket Summer League, which helped get the job in pro basketball. Even 32 points and 9 rebounds by American swingman Reginald Bratton (193-86, college: Lenoir-Rhyne, agency: Blacktop Management) did not help to save the game for Namika Lr. Forward Karl Engelvuori (191-95) added 10 points and 5 rebounds for the hosts. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Ura Basket maintains third position in Division with 17-5 record having just three points less than leader TuNMKY. Namika Lr at the other side keeps the twelfth place with 17 games lost. Ura Basket's next round opponent will be league's second-placed PuHu Juniorit in Vantaa and it will be for sure the game of the week. Namika Lr will play at home against HyPo (#6) and hope to win that game.

After 3 rounds played we can already see who rules in the 1st Division and who belongs to weaker ones. There was no lack of interesting games this round. The round ended with favorites losing the games and games ending by tiny margin.
