Kouvot - Helsinki Seagulls 88-94

Helsinki Seagulls upset Kouvot on the road and iced their semifinal appearance. The guests took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Kouvot won third quarter 26-14. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They outrebounded Kouvot 61-49 including 19 on the offensive glass. 26 personal fouls committed by Kouvot helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. The former international point guard Antto Nikkarinen (185-91, agency: Blacktop Management) fired 23 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists for the winners. American center Devonte Upson (206-93, college: SE Louisiana) chipped in a double-double by scoring 13 points and 13 rebounds. American guard Michael Cuffee (195-83, college: Middle Tenn.St.) produced a double-double by scoring 25 points and 14 rebounds and his fellow American import forward Rakeem Buckles (203-90, college: FIU) added 9 points and 17 rebounds respectively for lost side. Five Helsinki Seagulls and four Kouvot players scored in double figures.

Lapua - Kauhajoki 73-87

Kauhajoki topped Lapua to win the series 3-1. It looked good early as Lapuan Korikobrat took a 4-point small lead at the end of first quarter. But then Kauhajoen Karhu had a 21-8 second period charge getting the lead and Lapuan Korikobrat was not able to take back game control losing it eventually 73-87. Kauhajoen Karhu made 19-of-24 charity shots (79.2 percent) during the game. Kauhajoen Karhu outrebounded Lapuan Korikobrat 38-24 including 25 on the defensive glass. Lapuan Korikobrat was plagued by 27 personal fouls down the stretch. The game was dominated by American players. Worth to mention a great performance of swingman Austin Hollins (195-91, college: Minnesota) who helped to win the game recording 28 points and 5 rebounds. Forward DeVaughn Washington (202-89, college: Ohio, agency: Mansfield and Associates) contributed with a double-double by scoring 17 points and 14 rebounds for the winners. Guard Mario Edwards (191-88, college: Co.Carolina, agency: Mansfield and Associates) replied with 12 points and 5 assists and guard Jamal Jones (203-93, college: Texas A&M) added 11 points in the effort for Lapuan Korikobrat.

Kataja Basket outgunned BC Nokia on the road and advanced into the semifinal stage. The guests took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But BC Nokia won third quarter 20-13. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Joensuun Kataja made 22-of-27 free shots (81.5 percent) during the game. Worth to mention a great performance of American Rion Brown (198-91, college: Miami, FL) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 15 points and 15 rebounds and the former international point guard Teemu Rannikko (189-80) who added 13 points during the contest. Four Joensuun Kataja players scored in double figures. At the losing side forward Eldar Skamo (198-86) responded with 19 points and 9 rebounds and American guard Isaiah Wilkerson (191-90, college: NJIT) scored 14 points and 7 rebounds.

Karhu Kauhajoki (Korisliiga) agreed terms with American guard Marcus Allen (191-86kg). Allen just graduated from Stanford (NCAA). He has played there for the last four years. In 35 games he had 7.5ppg, 2.1rpg, 1.7apg and 1.2spg last season. Quite impressive year as he was named to All-Pac-12 All-Academic Honorable Mention and Pac-12 All-Defensive Team. Karhu Kauhajoki (Korisliiga) inked 27-year old American forward Flenard Whitfield (200-100kg-90, college: W.Michigan). He played most recently at KW Titans in Canadian NBL. In 21 NBL Canada games he was fifth best scorer with impressive 19.0ppg and recorded 8.5rpg, 1.8apg and 1.0bpg last season. Montakit Fuenlabrada (Liga Endesa) added to their roster 22-year old Finn power forward Emir Sulejmanovic (204-100kg-95). He is a dual citizen owning also Bosnia and Herzegovina passport. Sulejmanovic played last season at Cibona in Croatian A1 league, but left the team in Apr.'17. He managed to play in four leagues last year (!!!). In 20 A1 games he recorded 5.7ppg and 4.2rpg.
