Interview with Pape-Philippe Amagou, MVP of ProA - Round 20 - Mar 9, 2011

Pape-Philippe
Amagou
We are talking to Pape-Philippe Amagou (185-G-85, agency: Beo Basket) of Chorale Roanne, a player that was just elected MVP of the Round 20 in Pro A with his 30 points, 5 rebounds performance in a road win at Limoges.

Hello Pape Philippe, you are currently enjoying perhaps the best season in your career, putting up big numbers and being ranked in second place of the Pro A with Roanne. You must feel good about it?

Effectively, this season I probably have the best season so far, statistically, but also it goes along with good results of my team, I am very proud and happy about that. I wish to continue to progress and help my team win more games.

You are in the run for the title of French MVP, you lead all French players in scoring actually, is this something that you focus on?

Not really, like I said, my goal is to do well with my team, Roanne. If along that, I am selected as the MVP, I'll be very happy, but as of now, I'm just focused on ways to help my team win games.

After being brought up in Le Mans, along with some other players of your age, such as Alain Koffi and Yanick Bokolo, you also played in Nancy and Kavala (Greece), and now in your second season in Roanne. Tell us about your experience in Greece, and your desires for the rest of your career.

I had an awesome experience in Greece. I discovered a different basketball style than in France. It was also very enriching culturally, and on top of that I created many friendships. I would like to have a very successful end of season with Roanne, and hopefully play Euroleague with them. I would like also to play one day in best leagues in Europe, like Spain or Italy.

Roanne is a team loaded with talent, with Uche Nsonwu, Dylan Page, Ricky Davis, Solo Diabate... Team had a lot of injuries so far (Dylan Page, Alex Gordon). Which road Roanne must take in order to win French title?

It's true, we had a lot of injuries this season. It wasn't easy to bring in new players to our system all year long. We have to fight to maintain our high position in standings, before all of our players get healthy and then attack the playoffs with everybody healthy and available.

Upcoming Friday, you'll play in a big derby at home vs Cholet, currently in first place of Pro A. You beat them in Cholet, in the first part of the season, and an eventual win over Cholet on Friday would put you in first place. The atmosphere in the Halle Vacheresse will be explosive, are you excited about upcoming game?

Of course, I am very excited for this game. I am a big competitor and I love this kind of games, full of intensity and pressure. Despite our injury problems, we have to be solid against a very good team of Cholet, and try to win and obtain first place in front of our crowd. It should be a very hot atmosphere in our gym.

Pape Philippe what are your hobbies? Something to keep your head away from pressure of playing pro basketball?

Besides being a big fan and collector of movies and music, I like spending time in my house with my wife and my newborn baby.

Pape Philippe, thanks for your time, and good luck in the remainder of your season!

Thank you !!
