LFB Round 19: Bourges beat Lyon in the most crucial game of the week - Feb 10, 2013

Very exciting round. It does not happen too often that five games need overtime in just one round.

An exciting game between Top Four teams was played in Bourges. Second ranked Bourges faced 4th placed Lyon. Host Bourges (14-4) defeated guests from Lyon (11-8) 62-50. The hosts trailed by 1 point after first quarter, but they stormed back to get the 8-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 62-50. International Nwal-Endene Miyem (188-88) fired 19 points and 6 rebounds for the winners. Greek forward Styliani Kaltsidou (188-83, agency: Josep and Nicolas) chipped in 9 points and 4 assists. American center Mistie Mims (191-83, college: Duke) produced a double-double by scoring 12 points and 12 rebounds for lost side. Lyon's coach Laurent Buffard rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Bourges have an impressive series of five victories in a row. Defending champion maintains second place with 14-4 record having just three points less than leader Lattes Montp. Lyon at the other side keeps the fourth position with eight games lost. They share it with Landes and Tarbes. Bourges are looking forward to face Perpignan (#3) on the road in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Lyon will play against Basket Landes in Mont de Marsan and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Bottom-ranked Union Hainaut managed to get a fifth victory, breaking the series of two consecutive loses. This time they won against thirteenth-ranked Arras in Saint-Amand 72-64. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Arras. Worth to mention a great performance of Nigerian-American Ify Ibekwe (187-89, college: Arizona, agency: LBM Management) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 17 points and 14 rebounds. Amanda Jackson contributed with 16 points and 4 assists for the winners. Power forward Aurelie Carmona (185-87) answered with 17 points and 5 rebounds (perfect from the field making all seven shots !!!) for Arras. Union Hainaut (5-14) moved-up to thirteenth place, which they share with defeated Arras. Union Hainaut will play against higher ranked Charleville-Mezieres (#10) on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Arras will have a break next round.
Leader Lattes Montpellier delivered the sixteenth victory on Saturday night. This time they beat 10th ranked Charleville-Mezieres (7-12) 80-64. It was a great evening for Geraldine Robert who led her team to a victory scoring 22 points and 9 rebounds. At the losing side Amel Bouderra responded with 14 points and 5 assists. Lattes Montpellier maintains first place with 16-3 record. Loser Charleville-Mezieres keeps the tenth position with 12 games lost. They share it with Villeneuve and Aix-en-Provence. Lattes Montpellier will meet Nantes Reze (#7) on the road in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Charleville-Mezieres will play against Union Hainaut in Saint-Amand and hope to secure a win.
The game in Toulouse supposed to be also worth to mention about. Sixth ranked Tarbes (11-8) played at the court of 8th ranked Toulouse (8-11). Tarbes smashed Toulouse 70-49. The victory was the fourth consecutive win for Tarbes. They moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Landes and Lyon. Newly promoted Toulouse keeps the eighth position with 11 games lost. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest.

Newly promoted Perpignan maintains third place with 13-5 record having four points less than leader Lattes Montp. Loser Aix-en-Provence dropped to the tenth position with 12 games lost. Perpignan will face league's second-placed Bourges at home in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week.

In the last two games of round 19 Villeneuve was defeated by Landes in Mont de Marsan 66-64. Mondeville beat Nantes at home 68-66.



Union Hainaut - Arras 72-64

Bottom-ranked Union Hainaut managed to get a fifth victory, breaking the series of two consecutive loses. This time they won against thirteenth-ranked Arras in Saint-Amand 72-64. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Arras. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning the initial quarter 13-10. But Arras won second period 20-18. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Union Hainaut brought some defensive toughness making 7 blocks. Worth to mention a great performance of Nigerian-American Ify Ibekwe (187-89, college: Arizona, agency: LBM Management) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 17 points and 14 rebounds. American swingman Amanda Jackson (178-85, college: Miami, OH) contributed with 16 points and 4 assists for the winners. Four Union Hainaut players scored in double figures. Power forward Aurelie Carmona (185-87) answered with 17 points and 5 rebounds (perfect from the field making all seven shots !!!) and American point guard Dawn Evans (170-89, college: JMU, agency: LBM Management) added 18 points and 5 rebounds in the effort for Arras. Union Hainaut (5-14) moved-up to thirteenth place, which they share with defeated Arras. Union Hainaut will play against higher ranked Charleville-Mezieres (#10) on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Arras will have a break next round.

Australian center Abby Bishop (189-88) chipped in 13 points and 9 rebounds. Perpignan's coach Francois Gomez used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. Canadian forward Lizanne Murphy (185-84, college: Hofstra) produced 20 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists and Australian center Marianna Tolo (196-89) added 20 points (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field) respectively for lost side. Four Aix-en-Provence players scored in double figures. Newly promoted Perpignan maintains third place with 13-5 record having four points less than leader Lattes Montp. There was no surprise in Mont de Marsan where 11th ranked Villeneuve D'Ascq (7-12) was edged by sixth ranked Basket Landes (11-8) 66-64 on Saturday. However just two-point win is not that big difference and the fans of host team counted on more convincing victory. The hosts trailed by 2 points after first quarter, but they rallied back to get the 1-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 66-64. Anais Le Gluher (175-82) fired 17 points and 5 rebounds for the winners. Forward Valeriane Ayayi (185-94) chipped in 14 points and 5 rebounds. point guard Bintou Dieme (164-84) produced 13 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists and Nigerian center Olayinka Sanni (188-86, college: W.Virginia, agency: Josep and Nicolas) added 16 points and 7 rebounds respectively for lost side.
