• 1919 First appearance of basketball in Thessaloniki.
• 1928 Iraklis wins the first championship.
• 1936 25/6: National team plays and loses the international first game against Turkey (49-12) in Instambul.
• 1949 National team wins bronze metal in European championship.
• 1963-64 AEK wins the first national championship.
• 1968 AEK wins the European Cup Winners Cup (first Hellenic club to win a European trophy).
• 1970 Foundation of the Hellenic Basketball Federation.
• 1983 Regular TV broadcasting of at least on game per week.
• 1986 National team first participation in Mundobasket (ranked 10^th).
• 1987 Reforming of the championship, A1-A2 divisions created.
• 1987 National team wins gold metal in European championship
• 1988 Aris takes the 4^th place in the first European Championship final-four.
• 1988 Foreign players allowed in A1.

 There are 4 national divisions: A1, A2 (fully professional), B and C (semi-professional). Furthermore there are several regional amateur divisions.
