Corey Fisher selected the top Georgian playing abroad in last week's games - Dec 5, 2012

  follow us on Facebook Twitter

We bring you last week's top performances from Georgians who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.

Corey Fisher
Corey Fisher
#1. This week's number one is an international point guard Corey Fisher (186-88, college: Villanova, currently plays in Spain). He led FIATC Joventut to a victory over the closely-ranked CB Canarias (2-8) 92-81 in the Spanish ACB last Sunday. Fisher was MVP of the game. He recorded 29 points (!!!) and added 5 passes; quite an impressive performance considering it's only Fisher's second season in pro basketball. FIATC Joventut Badalona (5-5) is placed 12th in the ACB. It was his team's first victory after three consecutive loses. But this is still an early stage of the season and everything may happen. It's Fisher's first year with the team. Fisher is ranked seventh on the list of the top scorers in the league. He has very reliable stats this season: 14.7ppg, 2.9rpg, 2.7apg, 2FGP: 42.4%, 3FGP: 33.3% and FT: 77.8%. Fisher is a naturalized American. Despite he played previously for the USA university national team, Fisher is currently a member of the Georgian senior national team. Strangely he has never played in Georgia.

Viktor Sanikidze
Viktor Sanikidze
#2. Second place goes to an international small forward Viktor Sanikidze (203-86, currently plays in Euroleague). Sanikidze contributed to an easy victory against the closely-ranked Unicaja Malaga (6-2) 91-72 in the Euroleague on Friday night. He scored 10 points, grabbed 6 rebounds and dished 4 assists in 18 minutes. Montepaschi Siena (5-3) is placed third in group B. It was his team's fifth consecutive victory in a row. There are only two games left until the end of the Euroleague Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. It's Sanikidze's first season with the team. This year Sanikidze averages: 4.6ppg, 5.3rpg, 2FGP: 38.5% and FT: 73.3% in the eight games he played so far. He is in the roster of the Georgian senior national team.

Manuchar Markoishvili
Manuchar Markoishvili
#3. The Georgian player who performed third best last week abroad was an international small forward Manuchar Markoishvili (196-86, currently plays in Euroleague), who plays in Italy. Markoishvili could not help Cantu (2-6) in their last game. Despite his very good performance the sixth-placed Cantu was crushed 77-53 on the road by the second-ranked Khimky in the group A of Euroleague. Markoishvili was the top scorer with 16 points. He also added 4 rebounds in 30 minutes. It was Cantu's third consecutive loss in a row. There are only two games left until the end of the Euroleague Regular Season. So now every game is very crucial. Markoishvili is one of the most experienced players in a team as it's his fourth year in Cantu's roster. Markoishvili has relatively good stats this season: 10.4ppg, 2.0rpg, 1.6apg, 1.4spg, 2FGP: 33.3%, 3FGP: 37.9% and FT: 88.9% in the eight games. He is also a member of the Georgian senior national team.

Jacob Pullen
Jacob Pullen
#4. Point guard Jacob Pullen (185-89, college: Kansas St., currently plays in Eurocup), who plays in Israel was not able to help one of league's weakest teams Hapoel J-M (2-3) in their last game on Wednesday. Despite Pullen's very good performance Hapoel J-M was defeated 84-77 in Kyiv by the second-ranked Budivelnyk. He was the top scorer with 22 points. Pullen also added 3 assists and 4 steals. His team will play only one more game in the Eurocup Regular Season. This season Pullen has relatively solid stats: 13.8ppg, 2.2rpg, 2.6apg and 2.2spg. He is a naturalized American. Pullen is also Georgian national team player. Apparently he has never played in Georgia.

Georgi Tsintsadze
Georgi Tsintsadze
#5. International point guard Georgi Tsintsadze (192-86, currently plays in Eurocup) faced previously mentioned Jacob Pullen in the Eurocup last game. Tsintsadze contributed to Budivelnyk's victory against the closely-ranked Hapoel J-M (2-3) 84-77. He recorded 12 points and added 5 passes (made all of his five free throws) in 29 minutes. Tsintsadze's team will play only one more game in the Eurocup Regular Season. Tsintsadze has reliable stats this year: 11.0ppg, 3.0rpg, 3.2apg and 1.6spg in the five games. He plays currently for the Georgian national team.

Zaza Pachulia
Zaza Pachulia
#6. Center Zaza Pachulia (210-84, currently plays in NBA) contributed to a 3-point Atlanta Hawks' victory against the Charlotte Bobcats (7-9) 94-91 in the NBA last Wednesday. Pachulia scored 6 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. The Atlanta Hawks have a solid 9-5 record this season. It was his team's sixth consecutive victory in a row. But the season just started, so everything may happen. Pachulia's overall stats this year are: 6.9ppg, 7.1rpg and 1.6apg. He is an international player who is currently on the senior Georgian National Team roster.

Giorgi Shermadini
Giorgi Shermadini
#7. International center Giorgi Shermadini (216-89, currently plays in Euroleague) managed to help Maccabi Electra Tel-Aviv in a victory against the fifth-ranked Chalon/Saor (2-6) 78-73 in the Euroleague on Thursday night. Shermadini scored only 4 points in 5 minutes on the court. Maccabi Electra Tel-Aviv (6-2) is placed first in group B. There are only two games left until the end of the Euroleague Regular Season. This year Shermadini's overall stats are: 5.3ppg and 2.5rpg in the eight games. He is also Georgian national team player.

Davit Maisuradze
Davit Maisuradze
#8. Power forward Davit Maisuradze (205-90, currently plays in Ukraine) was not able to secure a victory for Kirovograd (5-7) in their game against Koksokh-Stal (4-8) in the Ukrainian Higher League (second division). He recorded 8 points, 5 rebounds and 2 blocks in 28 minutes. Kirovograd lost 59-67 in Alchevsk to the lower-ranked (#7) Koksokh-Stal. But there are still lots of games to play and it's a long way to go. This year Maisuradze's total stats are: 8.2ppg, 4.4rpg and 1.5apg in the 12 games. He used to play for the Georgian U16 national team back in 2006.

The list of other players, who all have Georgian passport but never been selected to any of Georgian national teams:

#1. Will Thomas (203-PF-86, currently plays in EuroChallenge), who plays in Turkey could not help Karsiyaka (4-1) in their last game. Despite his very good performance the first-placed Karsiyaka lost 74-80 on the road to the lower-ranked (#3) Krka in the group A of EuroChallenge. Thomas was the top scorer with 24 points. He also added 7 rebounds in 34 minutes. It was Karsiyaka's first loss after four consecutive victories. Thomas' team will play only one more game in the EuroChallenge Regular Season. And that game will be critical. Thomas has relatively good stats this year: 11.0ppg, 5.2rpg and 1.8apg in the five games he played so far. He is a naturalized American. Thomas used to play for Army Sport Klub Tbilisi in Georgian league.

#2. Quinton Hosley (201-F/G-84, college: Fresno St., currently plays in Eurocup) was the major contributor in a Stelmet ZG's victory against the league leader Unics Kazan (4-1) 91-76 in the Eurocup in Wednesday night's game. Hosley scored 19 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Stelmet Zielona Gora (3-2) is placed second in the Eurocup. His team will play only one more game in the Eurocup Regular Season. And now that game is very crucial. Hosley is currently fourth on the list of most steals. This season he has very good stats: 13.2ppg, 6.2rpg, 3.2apg and 2.4spg. Hosley is a naturalized American. Apparently he has never played in Georgia.

#3. Melvin Sanders (196-F/G-81, college: Oklahoma St., currently plays in Italy) was not able to help Sigma Barcellona (6-3) in their game against AcegasAps TR (5-4) in the Italian Lega2 (second division). Sanders scored 5 points, had 4 rebounds and dished 4 assists. Sigma Barcellona was defeated 76-61 in Trieste by the lower-ranked AcegasAps TR (#8). It was Sigma Barcellona's first loss after four consecutive victories. But the season is still in it's first stage and everything can happen. Sanders' stats this season are: 10.3ppg, 6.3rpg and 2.0apg. He is a naturalized American. Interesting that Sanders has never played in Georgia.

Scafati adds Metreveli to their roster - 7 hours ago
Givova Scafati Basket (Serie A2) added to their roster 26-year old Georgian power forward Nika Metreveli (211-105kg-91). He played recently at JuveCaserta in the Serie A, but left the team earlier this month. Serie A was a little too high level for him, where in 10 games he recorded just 0.6ppg and 1.0rpg this season. Serie A2 will be definitely a better match and he can see more playing time. The list of the past achievements is quite long as among others Metreveli won Georgian League ch...   [read more]
