Superleague Round 17: Olimpi beat Mgzavrebi in a derby game - Feb 19, 2017

The Regular Season in Superleague is slowly approaching the end. But there may be still some important changes in the final standings in the last 4 rounds.

The most exciting game was a derby match between two local teams from Tbilisi: Olimpi (#7) and Mgzavrebi (#8). Mgzavrebi was defeated at home 73-79 and even the advantage of their own court did not help. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Mgzavrebi. The guests trailed by 1 point at the halftime before their 26-12 charge in the third quarter, which allowed them to win the game. Olimpi forced 27 Mgzavrebi turnovers. The best player for the winners was American guard Nick Schlitzer (198-92, college: Philadelphia) who scored 20 points and 6 rebounds. The former international guard Revaz Rogava (191-93) chipped in 21 points and 4 steals. Olimpi's coach Leonid Ivatin used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. American point guard Corey Allen (185-92, college: S.Florida) produced 25 points for the hosts. Olimpi maintains seventh place with 5-11 record. Mgzavrebi at the other side stay at the bottom position with 14 games lost. Olimpi are looking forward to face league's second-placed Kutaisi on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Mgzavrebi's supporters also look forward to another derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Tbilisi Dinamo Tbilisi.
Another exciting game was again a derby between two teams from Tbilisi: Dinamo Tbilisi (#1) and Sokhumi (#4). Sokhumi was crushed at home by 18 points 86-104 and even the fact of playing on their own court did not help. The former international Mikheil Berishvili (204-87) orchestrated the victory by scoring 16 points, 8 rebounds and 9 assists. Nikola Maravic contributed with 18 points and 11 rebounds for the winners. American guard Dwayne Lathan (190-89, college: Indiana St.) answered with 20 points and 5 assists for Sokhumi. Both coaches used bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Undefeated Dinamo Tbilisi (17-0) have an impressive series of seventeen victories in a row. They maintain first place with a perfect record of 17 victories in a row. Sokhumi at the other side keeps the fourth position with ten games lost. They share it with Cactus Tbilisi. Dinamo Tbilisi's supporters look forward to another derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Tbilisi to the arena Mgzavrebi.
An exciting game between Top Four teams was played in Rustavi. Third ranked Energy Invest faced second-ranked Kutaisi. Host Energy Invest (10-7) defeated guests from Kutaisi (12-4) 75-63. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Kutaisi. Sergo Atuashvili stepped up with a double-double by scoring 15 points and 11 rebounds for the winners. Akaki Lomouri responded with 10 points and 8 rebounds. Kutaisi's coach Kote Tugushi rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Energy Invest maintains third place with 10-7 record having seven points less than leader Dinamo Tbilisi. Defending champion Kutaisi keeps the second position with four games lost. Energy Invest will meet at home Batumi (#6) in the next round. Kutaisi will play against Olimpi (#7) and hope to secure a win.

Cactus Tbilisi did not have too big problems and got a relatively easy victory 85-68. Beqa Chikviladze nailed 21 points and 6 rebounds for the winning side. Cactus Tbilisi moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Sokhumi. Batumi lost their sixth game in a row. They dropped to the sixth position with 11 games lost. Cactus Tbilisi's supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Tbilisi to the arena Sokhumi.

Sokhumi - Dinamo Tbilisi 86-104

Another exciting game was again a derby between two teams from Tbilisi: Dinamo Tbilisi (#1) and Sokhumi (#4). Sokhumi was crushed at home by 18 points 86-104 and even the fact of playing on their own court did not help. The game was mostly controlled by Dinamo Tbilisi. Sokhumi was better in fourth quarter 33-25. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They outrebounded Sokhumi 43-28 including a 33-20 advantage in defensive rebounds. Dinamo Tbilisi players were unselfish on offense dishing 33 assists comparing to just 19 passes made by Sokhumi's players. The former international Mikheil Berishvili (204-87) orchestrated the victory by scoring 16 points, 8 rebounds and 9 assists. Serbian center Nikola Maravic (212-89, agency: BeoBasket) contributed with a double-double by scoring 18 points and 11 rebounds for the winners. Five Dinamo Tbilisi players scored in double figures.
