Sometimes even when there seems to be a positive trend in the play with a player, it doesnt necessarily mean that everything is blooming like a beautiful moon flower blooming in moonlight, because FC Bayern Munich fans must of had a uneasy feeling when Beko BBL rookie Ben Hansbrough (190-G-87, college: Notre Dame) wasnt in the lineup last night in Wurzburg. The 24 year old Hansbrough asked the team to terminate his contract and the club granted his wish. Hansbrough who wasnt drafted in the NBA last summer, but was on the radar of many teams came to Munich with some what expectations, but not until recently wasnt able to have a steady spot in the rotation of Dirk Bauermann. In his first five games, his minutes decreased each game. Only recently, did Bauermann give him more trust as he scored 10 points against Giessen and 13 points against the Eisbaeren Bremerhaven. However, the ride in Munich was never easy for the American who had a stellar four year career with the fighting Irish at Notre Dame as in his senior year, he played 34 games: 18.4ppg, 3.9rpg, 4.3apg, 1.2spg, FGP: 47.9%, 3PT: 43.5%, FT: 81.5% as there were some factors going against him. It is no secret that players dont always have a cake walk adjusting to the European game as guys like Damian Saunders (BG Goettingen) and Gilbert Brown (s.Oliver Baskets Wurzburg left Germany early and it seemed like Hansbrough was also one of these players. It is always essential that a coach shows some kind of trust in a player, but Dirk Bauermann stated already very early in the season negativity to the American in a SPOX article. 'I was a big fan of Bens when he was playing for Notre Dame. But you know how it often is in life: Its not until you see him in practice every day that you realize how far behind he is in the areas he was able to camouflage in college.Ben is excellent with the ball. The problem is: As a playmaker in college, he had a lot of options from the pick-and-roll that are simply not available in European basketball. And one thing he wasnt taught in college at all is how to move without the ball. European basketball, however, revolves around playing off the ball. If he were playing for a different team, he might already be one of the most noticeable players in the league, because he would have the ball in his hands more often. But when it comes to more complex things, theres a lot he still needs to learn.I assumed that because of his toughness and his quick feet, Ben would be a good man-to-man defender, even though Notre Dame played a lot of zone. But he has a hard time understanding and implementing defensive concepts. Thats why a lot of things are still rudimentary and at an early stage', stressed Dirk Bauermann. In 10 Beko BBL games, Hansbrough averaged 5,5ppg, 1,6rpg and 2,7apg in 13,4 minutes per game. In 3 Eurocup games, he averaged 8,0ppg, 2,0rpg and 1,3apg in 21,7minutes per game while shooting 44,4% from outside. Hansbrough is a very talented player and should find a new team quickly.
