Geddes Robinson the main man in Rhoendorf's upswing - Jan 5, 2013

Geddes
Robinson
Basketball is a team sport? True. But nonetheless the talent and skill of an individual can take a team to new heights without a doubt. There's no championship winning team without at least one standout player, somebody has to be the leading scorer after all. Geddes Robinson (195-PF-87, agency: SDJ Sports, college: Utah Valley) is just that for current 2. Bundesliga Pro B South leader Dragons Rhoendorf. The 25-year-old power forward is the statistical leader of a club that looks like a championship candidate this season. The Dragons are 11-1. Though a 77-81 loss to Noerdlingen in mid-December ruined the clean sheet, a lot is working well for the Rhoendorf team. "The things that have been working so far is playing as a team and being able to trust each other. My teammates are so unselfish, I just try my best to be the same", Robinson said.

The 2012 graduate of Utah Valley University, who left school with a degree in behavioral science with an emphasis in psychology, is amongst the league's most productive players, averaging 19.1 points, 12.2 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.6 steals per contest. While being best known for his rebounding at UVU - Robinson finished his college career with all-time leading rebounder honors under his belt - he emerged as a very capable scorer in Rhoendorf, a rather unheralded part of his game up to this point. "I felt like I could always score the ball, but I have come to understand on every team I play for my role can change. I just have to accept it, because at the end of the night winning is what matters. You cant brag about scoring 30 if you lost", he added. While in Germany Robinson has been able to accomplish both, winning and scoring. He produced 16 points or more in each of his twelve appearances this season and recorded eight double-doubles.

An undersized power forward, standing 6'5'' tall, he just outworks and outmaneuvers taller opponents and is currently ranked second in the league in rebounds per contest: "I like that rebounding can give a person the feeling of dominating the game. With less second chance shots the opposing team will feel powerless", Robinson said, and commenting on the expression that the team which controls the boards usually wins the game, he added: "I believe that statement to be true, because the more my team has the ball, the more opportunities we have to score." And to win. And to add to their record, which could eventually result in pushing for a championship. "My team will handle the pressure just fine", Robinson said about playing with a bull's eye on his back, "we handled being unbeaten for such a long time and did good with that. This is just another challenge we have to prove we can do."

After several months playing and living in Germany, another task appears to be a no-brainer for Robinson. As a first year player he had to deal with a cultural shock, which turned out to be much more of a joy than a hassle for him: "Its a big difference in a positive way, because Im in a town where people accept me even before I played a game. It's like Im family to them and Im thankful for it, because thats a blessing in itself. Playing in small gyms to me is basketball regardless. I love to compete whether we're outside playing, inside big gyms or small. Im from New York, we just need a ball and a rim."
