BBL Round 17: Bayern Muenchen beats ratiopharm Ulm by two after a very close game - Jan 6, 2013

BBL is at the halfway of the Regular Season and there are still another 17 rounds left.

The most exciting game of round 17 in the BBL took place in Muenchen. This derby game ended with only two-point defeat on the road of 3rd placed ratiopharm Ulm (11-6) to sixth ranked Bayern Muenchen (11-6) 80-78 in the game for the fourth place. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of ratiopharm Ulm. The hosts trailed by 3 points after three quarters before their 21-16 charge, which allowed them to win the game. American-Bulgarian center Jared Homan (206-83, college: Iowa St.) orchestrated the victory by scoring 20 points and 8 rebounds. International Robin Benzing (209-89) contributed with 14 points and 13 rebounds for the winners. American guard Allan Ray (188-84, college: Villanova) answered with 17 points for ratiopharm Ulm. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Bayern Muenchen have an impressive series of six victories in a row. They moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Ratiopharm. Bayern Muenchen is looking forward to face New Yorker Phantoms (#16) in Braunschweig in the next round which should be an easy win for them. ratiopharm Ulm will play at home against LTi 46ers (#18) in Giessen and is hoping to win this game.
BBL top team - Brose Bask. (14-2) managed to deliver another win. This time they beat twelfth ranked BBC Bayreuth (7-10) in Bamberg 85-74. American swingman Casey Jacobsen (198-81, college: Stanford) stepped up and scored 18 points for the winners and Maik Zirbes chipped in 11 points and 7 rebounds. American-Puerto Rican guard Kevin Hamilton (193-84, college: Holy Cross) responded with 13 points and 5 assists. Both coaches tested many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. The victory was the fourth consecutive win for Brose Bask.. Defending champion maintains first place with 14-2 record. BBC Bayreuth at the other side dropped to the thirteenth position with ten games lost. They share it with MBC. Brose Bask. will play against Eisbaeren Bremerhaven (#10) on the road in the next round and are hoping to win another game. BBC Bayreuth will play against Telekom Baskets in Bonn and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Worth to mention about the upset in a game between TBB Trier (9-8) and Telekom Baskets (7-9), which took place in Bonn. Higher ranked TBB Trier lost to fourteenth ranked Telekom Baskets in a road game 76-90 on Sunday. Benas Veikalas nailed 22 points (on 9-of-11 shooting from the field) for the winning side. Nate Linhart came up with a double-double by scoring 16 points and 10 rebounds for TBB Trier in the defeat. TBB Trier's coach Henrik Roedl rotated ten players and allowed the starting five to rest. Telekom Baskets moved-up to eleventh place, which they share with s.Oliver Baskets. Loser TBB Trier keeps the seventh position with eight games lost. Telekom Baskets will meet BBC Bayreuth (#13) on the road in the next round. TBB Trier will play against EnBW Ludwigsburg (#17) and hope to secure a win.
Another upset was a game between s Oliver Baskets (7-9) and Mitteldeutscher BC (7-10), which took place in Weissenfels. 11th ranked s Oliver Baskets lost to fourteenth ranked Mitteldeutscher BC in a road game 66-80. American players dominated the game. The best player for the winners was Devin Uskoski who scored 22 points and 8 rebounds (perfect from the field making all eight shots !!!). Mitteldeutscher BC's coach Silvano Poropat allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. Mitteldeutscher BC moved-up to thirteenth place, which they share with Bayreuth. s Oliver Baskets at the other side keep the eleventh position with nine games lost. Mitteldeutscher BC's next round opponent will be again higher ranked s Oliver Baskets (#11) in Wuerzburg and it will be quite challenging to get another victory.
Another upset was a game between Artland Dragons (10-7) and Phoenix Hagen (8-9), which took place in Quakenbrueck. Higher ranked Artland Dragons lost at home to eleventh ranked Phoenix Hagen 93-104 on Saturday. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Artland Dragons. Davin White orchestrated the victory by scoring 22 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists. Artland Dragons' coach let to play ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Phoenix Hagen moved-up to eighth place, which they share with Walter Tigers and Bremerhaven. Loser Artland Dragons keep the sixth position with seven games lost. Phoenix Hagen will face league's second-placed EWE Baskets in Oldenburg in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory.

There were no big surprises in other games of round 17: NY Phantoms were smashed by ALBA on the road 80-58. Bottom-ranked LTi 46ers were destroyed by Fraport SKY on its own court 59-79. Walter Tigers managed to outperform Neckar L'burg in Tuebingen 78-73.



Telekom Baskets - TBB Trier 90-76

Worth to mention about the upset in a game between TBB Trier (9-8) and Telekom Baskets (7-9), which took place in Bonn. Higher ranked TBB Trier lost to fourteenth ranked Telekom Baskets in a road game 76-90 on Sunday. The game was mostly controlled by Telekom Baskets. TBB Trier managed to win third quarter 25-23. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Telekom Baskets looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists comparing to just 8 passes made by TBB Trier's players. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Telekom Baskets made 7 blocks. Lithuanian guard Benas Veikalas (192-83, college: Metro St.) nailed 22 points (on 9-of-11 shooting from the field) for the winning side and American point guard Jared Jordan (188-84, college: Marist) accounted for 0 points and 16 assists. ALBA Berlin outrebounded New Yorker Phantoms 32-21 including 24 on the defensive glass. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of ratiopharm Ulm. The hosts trailed by 3 points after three quarters before their 21-16 charge, which allowed them to win the game.
