It's a long way from New Zealand to Magdeburg. But Benny Charles 'BJ' Anthony (198-F-88) was willing to accept the extensive journey, when Dimitris Polychroniadis offered him a spot on his roster. The head coach of the BBC Solarto Eagles Magdeburg was looking to add some strength to his frontcourt to provide a boost for the title race in the 1. Regionalliga North, while Anthony needed a fresh start. "I've been out with injuries the past year and thought this was the right step to take for moving forward. Loving Magdeburg so far and the teammates are great", he told Eurobasket.com.
The 24-year-old power forward from Auckland, New Zealand, who also holds a British passport, jumped out to an impeccable start with the Eagles, propelling his new team to a 98-93 road win at VfL Stade in his first game after signing. He paced the Eagles with 33 points and eight rebounds in a clash of RLN heavyweights. Magdeburg handed Stade only its second loss this season and gave the Magdeburg fans new hope as far as winning the RLN title is concerned: "I definitely think we can [finish the season in first place]", Anthony said, "but for now we have to focus on winning games, as long as we do our best anything can happen. Stade is a solid squad and it's hard to see them dropping anymore games, but anything can happen in any given day, so we are focusing on our progression as a team right now."
After holding off ASC 46 Goettingen 85-60 last week, the Eagles were in for a tough battle, when taking on SSV Lok Bernau on Saturday. Bernau built its biggest lead of 14 points in the first half, but Magdeburg gradually chipped into the deficit and notched a close 70-69 win. Anthony led all scorers with 20 points to go along with 12 rebounds. "It obviously says we want to win", he commented on the question of what this victory told him about his team and added: "Keeping things competitive in practice goes a long way." With Anthony, Canadian highflyer Yannick Anzuluni (206-G/F-87, college: Houghton) and second new recruit Martin Volf (200-F-80) - an Uruguayan big man with a Czech passport - Coach Polychroniadis has strong options to choose from at the wing and in the paint. Especially Anthony and Anzuluni are forming an impressive duo despite having played only three games alongside eachother so far: "I really enjoy playing with Yannick. We see eye to eye out there and we both really want to win. On the pick an roll it creates tough match ups for the opposition and it puts us both in scoring positions", Anthony said.
The Eagles return to action on Saturday against the Bodfeld Baskets, before playing at SG Wolfenbuettel a week later. It's going to be a well known place for Anthony who spent his first Germany stint playing in Wolfenbuettel in the 2008-09 and half of the 2009-10 season.

After 20 years as a professional under his belt and 15 seasons in Germany amassing 457 BBL games, the basketball dino from Serbia Aleksandar Nadjfeji (203-F-76) has finally decided to hang up his sneakers. Nadjfeji is 39 year old 203 cm forward that played three seasons for the Telekom Baskets Bonn, two and half years with the Koeln 99ers (Germany-1.Bundesliga), one and half years with Alba Berlin, three years with FC Bayern Munich and four seasons with the Walter Tigers Tuebingen. He won a BBL league title and cup with Cologne as well as the same with Alba Berlin. He finished his four year career with the Walter Tigers Tuebingen scoring 985 points, hauling down 288 rebounds and dishing out 178 assists.
Nadjfeji now will step behind the bench and assist head coach Tyrone Mccoy as an assistant coach. The main duty for the ex power forward will be to aid in the individual work with the players. This is something that isn't new to him as he had helped the last three years with the TIgers big men. Guys like Augustine Rubit and Bogdan Radosavljevic really profited from his know how. "Tuebingen was my first and best option for me and my family. After a 20 year career, I am looking forward to being a coach. I will give my whole know how and effort for the organization, team and coach Mccoy", stressed Aleksandar Nadjfeji. "We estimate the person Aleksandar Nadjfeji very much. His basketball know how is undisputed. We are convinced that he will be able to take that first step to becoming a good coach with us", stressed Walter TIgers Tuebingen manager Robert Wintermantel.
