Myles Hesson
It is one of the greatest success stories in the 2. Bundesliga Pro B this season. The Weissenhorn Youngstars have established themselves in the upper echelon of the standings, keeping hold on second place in the standings and impressing with a blend of youth and experience.
Behind a 34-point, 19-rebound effort by Myles Hesson (195-F-90, agency: Two Points), the Youngstars captured a 90-81 victory on the road over the Dresden Titans on Sunday: "We went there with seven guys but still had every intension of winning the game", Hesson told Eurobasket.com. "We knew that if we played smart defence and stayed out of foul trouble that we would give ourselves a good chance. Offensivley we really shared the ball and got out and run on the break as often as possible to use our youth and energy to our advantage. We also dominated on the glass which gave us some extra possesions and easy points."

Setting personal Pro B career highs in scoring and rebounding against the Titans, the British forward powered the Youngstars to their seventh win in the past ten games. Thus, Hesson continued his stellar all-star-like performances he has been showing since resuming the season following the christmas break - not to mention that he has been the Youngstars' go-to-guy ever since joining the team in September 2012. Hesson has averaged 24.2 points and 12.2 rebounds in five games played in 2013 and looks like a surefire candidate for winning Pro B Player of the Month honors: "I haven't really shot the ball well at all this season so I have made a more concerted effort to get to the basket and it worked out better for me so far [in 2013]."

Truth to be told, the current success has been enabled by a total makeover. Weissenhorn basketball has changed its face significantly and reorganized its structure and personnel. It started following a devastating 2011-12 season which saw the Weissenhorn Panthers spending most of the time at the bottom of the Pro B South standings. They saved the Pro B spot though, holding off Wolfenbuettel in the play-out series, but nonetheless, the organization was on the edge of giving up. That's when BBL team ratiopharm Ulm came in. Fresh off an appearance in the BBL finals, the organization took over Weissenhorn basketball, installed a new name, a new look and a new intention. The team should help to nurture talent and develop young players in order to prepare them for one day joining the BBL ranks. The Weissenhorn Panthers had turned into the Weissenhorn Youngstars aka the ratiopharm Ulm feeder team.
And the decision makers were able to entice some of the most promising German hopefuls to come to Weissenhorn, including Daniel Theis (203-PF-92), Till-Joscha Joenke (190-PG-92) and Kay Gausa (199-F-92) who received "double licenses" to primarily work out with the BBL team, while gaining playing time with the Weissenhorn side. Juggling the demands of two teams can be challenging for these young guns at times, but they are handling it well, Hesson said: "They work extremely hard and make as many practices with us as they can, they rarely miss any. I also try to practice with them [Ulm's BBL team] when I can. Playing against players of that level is only going to make you better and makes it a bit eaiser when it comes to playing our games."

With Maksym Shtein (206-C-80, agency: Limelight Hoops) and Christian Grosse (180-G-84) being the sole veterans on the Youngstars' roster, the team is stuffed with talent which turns out to be a handful for most of the opposing teams: "Being such a young team helps us against other teams in this league because we play with that extra bit of energy and enthusiasm which u may not find in an older team, we try to exploit this wen we fast break, most teams can't keep up with us once we get going", Hesson said.

When looking for some help from abroad in pre-season the Weissenhorn Youngstars stuck to their criteria and signed Hesson, a young British forward who despite being just 22 years of age would provide experience and leadership. The 22-year-old forward had worked with Weissenhorn Tim Lewis before and didn't think twice, when being presented with the opportunity: "He [Lewis] was the main factor in me signing for Weissenhorn", Hesson said. "I reached out to him before the start of the season as I hadn't found a job in Europe and really wanted to make the move from the British 1st league. He pulled some strings and made it possible for me to play two preseason games for them, so I flew out the next day with just a small bag and I signed a few days later."

Only a couple of weeks prior to making his way to Germany, Hesson had attended the Olympic training camp of Team Great Britain in Houston, Texas. "Being in Houston with the national team was a dream come true. Training was intense and going up against NBA level players twice a day was brilliant for my development. Trying to guard Luol [Deng] in practice was a difficult task but was great for me, I learned a lot."

And he is showing it, which bodes well for the team's continued success this season. The Youngstars might be in the mix for a deep play off run.
"I think if we all remain healthy and keep improving game to game we will have a good run in the playoffs and hopefully make it to the finals", Hesson said. "I haven't seen what the competition in the north is like yet, so I'm looking forward to that."
