DaShaun Wood (185-PG-85, college: Wright St.) is a 27 year old 185cm point guard from Detroit, Michigan that is playing his third season in Germany and second for Alba Berlin. He is a young point guard with natural leadership abilities, who directs teammates on the floor and takes the ball in clutch moments. Loves to go inside to score, challenging the big guys, but has also shooting range from behind the 3pts arch. Despite lack of size, he can be effective even at the defensive side. He played at Wright state from 2003-2007. In his senior year, he played 33 games averaging 19.6ppg, 5.1rpg, 4.0apg, 1.9spg, FGP: 43.5%, 3Pts: 37.3%, FT: 88.3%. He spoke to eurobasket about basketball.
This is your second season away from the Fraport Skyliners.Do you still feel at home when you play there?
I guess I do since I hit most of my shots in the loss this season. 24 points was the most I made this season. I just felt real confident on that day and had much confidence. I felt very relaxed and that arena is my home away from home.
Does your teammate Deon Thompson have a chance at the MVP award?
I think he has a good chance to win it. If you look at what he has done in the Euroleague. He has been very important in that competition and in the Beko BBL, he has carried us. You have to give him credit in that he has dominated both competitions.
Can you leave the floor with a smile when you can keep Jared Jordan to four assists? Jordan is one of the best point guards in Europe and no matter where I have gone against him in an NBA predraft camp or in Europe, you have to be at the top of your game. By getting only four assists, he wasnt able to make his teammates better and that was one of the reasons why we won.
Robert Vaden can shoot out the lights. To what deadly shooter would you compare his game to?
I would compare his game to JR Smith. Vaden is the type of player that can change a game at a heart beat. It doesnt matter if he has an open shot, guarded by two guys or getting that tough shot, he is always able to hit them and fill up the stat sheet.
How happy have you been with the season of Alba Berlin after starting 2-2, then having an 8 game winning streak and since winning five of eight games?
We could be doing a bit better I think. We have lost some games that we could of won. We really want to be in the top four in the standings at the end of the season. Even if we have had some tight loses in the Euroleague, we know that the experience that we have gained will help us in games in the playoffs.
Alba Berlin has beat the Brose Baskets Bamberg twice this season. Why do they seem easier to beat this season then the last years? I dont think that they are easier to beat, but we just took care of the home court advantage. We still have to play them two more times in Bamberg. We hope to be able to steal one. The season doesnt start until the playoffs and that is when you have to be able to win on the road.
You beat FC Bayern Munich this season. How dangerous will they be in playoffs? They will be very dangerous. They have a good rhythm, momentum and have been playing very well together. They have had some big wins against Bamberg and us. They will go to the cup with a lot of confidence. I do think that any of the top 6 teams in the Beko BBL can win the title this season.
How much of a challenge was it playing against Milos Teodosic? It was a great experience playing against him. Many say that he is the best point guard in Europe. Tobe able to go on his home court and be able to compete against him and put up good stats made me happy. We also had a good effort as a team against one of the best teams in Europe.
What has been your impression of French man Ali Traore?
He is very experienced, athletic, plays good defense and just knows the game. He now just has to continue to get into game shape and then he can be one of the best big men in the league.
Who wins a flight to the basket Quantez Robertson or Derrick Byars? That is tough, but Byars isnt in his prime, but three years ago I would have flipped a coin. I have seen Tez do some amazing things as I have Byars. I guess the best thing would be to get Magic Johnson to put up a million to see who can fly better.
You were on the same page with head coach Sasa Obradovic early. You want to win titles, but you are a different player than two seasons ago in Frankfurt. Who is DaShaun Wood the player this season? We have a great game plan this season. We really want to win titles. Each player has made that sacrifice to do what is best for the team. I just try to do the things that will make the team better like playing good defense, showing leadership and things in practice. I do what coach tells me to do.
I call Davin White mini Wood, because he is dominating the Beko BBL like you were two seasons ago. Do you miss being able to play like that? I do miss being able to play like that. We had a great team with Frankfurt that finished in second place. Playing at this level and at this stage of my career it is not so much trying to be like an Allen Iverson and just score, but trying to win titles and competiting at the Euroleague level. If you look at Real Madrid, they have so many talented players, but no one averages 20 points. They are trying to get their team to the promised like I am and not worrying about scoring.
When you look back at your season with Frankfurt what memory comes to mind first?
The fans and the organization and how much support they gave me. That is the main reason why were so successful because of the support.
What play on the court do you remember most?
I had three or four game winners and the two I had against Braunschweig were almost the exact same with a pick and role and lay up to win the game.
I remember Tez starting from the baseline and getting your back door pass for easy dunks.
I think that Tez doesnt have those spectacular dunks like two years ago. He really should call me and thank me for all those back door passes that I gave him.
Who is more unlucky your Detroit Lions for not winning the Superbowl or Jimmy Mckinney with his injury woes?
The Lions keep destroying themselves each season. They just cant seem to do anything right. Mckinney has had a great career and was having a good season until he injured himself. I think that the Lions have far worse luck than Jimmy.
Can Derk Fischer make Russell Westbrook into an even better point guard? I would have to say no. Both are very much different type of point guards, Westbrook is still young and always getting better.
What was the last DVD movie that you saw? Hit men.

He started his basketball career at Centenary (NCAA) in 2006 where he played three seasons and a total of 89 NCAA games. As a senior he moved to Pittsburgh (NCAA). He turned professional in 2011 and played briefly in the ABA and in the UBL before making Germany his home as he played for teams like Dortmund, Bochum, and Science City Jena. He spoke to eurobasket after the tough loss to Trier.
Chase thanks for talking to eurobasket.com. 2017 is here and are you the type of guy that goes into a new year with new years resolutions or more a guy that doesn't bother with that? It's certainly important to reflect on the first half of the season at this point and evaluate what needs improvement. A new mentality is always a helpful way to regain focus and set new goals.
The Uni Baskets Paderborn suffered a tough 69-66 loss to Trier. They had the 37-26 lead at halftime. It took you a while as a team to get going scoring 24 points in the third quarter to get back into the game. What adjustments did you make? We were sluggish and emotionless, so coach wanted us to turn up the pressure and play more lively. Communication and strong rotations were the emphasis.
Paderborn had the 66-63 lead with 2.54 minutes to play and were controlling the last 4-5 minutes keeping the lead, but then lost control allowing Trier to close out the game with a 6-0 run. How bitter was this outcome losing like this? Is that worse then getting beat by a buzzer beater?
Losing period is hurtful, especially with a team that we will potentially be fighting against for a playoff spot. We must collectively play better in those defining moments.
What was key in the last few minutes that allowed Trier to get the momentum and win the game?
Besides handing them free throws, it was the bad offensive possessions where we didn't get a good shot up.
Do you feel like there would have been a different outcome at the end had you not fouled out at 1.10 minutes to play?
Absolutely. These are the moments that I've been working hard to be prepared for and I was more than ready to perform. Unfortunately it didn't go as planned and it really hurt to have to watch.
Do you feel also had the team contained American Brandon Spearman better and limited his trips to the free throw line that you would have been able to preserve the win? We expected him to attack and lucky for him he got the calls. It was a smart effort on his behalf, but we should have executed better on offense.
A big problem of the Uni Baskets Paderborn in their current 5 game losing streak has been the inability to close out games. Has this trend turned into an unwanted type of disease?
I wouldn't call it a disease, if anything it's showing that we have heart and even though we are down at the moment, we aren't a door mat you can walk over. We can go toe to toe with any team and any game versus Paderborn will be a battle.
After the wild 130-125 double OT win against the Drsden Titans in October, you said that this will be a season to remember. Do you still feel this now at 7-11 and out of the playoff spots?
I stand by my statement whole heartedly. I won't give up until the season is completely over. At the end if we don't make it then we don't make it, but as long as we lace up and we throw on that jersey We are planning to win them all.
The Uni Baskets Paderborn played Kirchheim and Crailsheim very tight. What do you believe is missing for you to be able to beat these caliber type teams?
Defensive discipline in the last seconds of the shot clock and simply offensive execution when the game is on the line. Completing those possessions with a stop and not giving them second chances or easy looks. Offensively getting highly efficient shot attempts. These two factors have decided these close losses.
Before the loss to Trier, Paderborn was allowing 80 points per game. The team defended a lot better against Trier. Do you feel that Paderborn could hold more Pro A teams to around 70 points which would put you in a lot better position to win?
If we put our mind to it we can do anything. Everything else is in order, so the next step is take more pride in defense and to stick to our principles. The effort needs to stay at a high level for 40minutes.
Currently your third in tea s coring, first in assists and steals and second in rebounding. How happy have you been with your first half performance?
Not Satisfied one bit. It's just not enough in my book. To get over the hump I must turn it up a couple notches.
You continue to be a great defender leading the team with 2,6spg. How does a top notch defender like you continue to excel at this trade? What do you do in practices that has you always ready in games?
Defense is built on toughness, determination to stop your assignment and to give your all for the team. You just show up with that mentality everyday in practice so it's natural in game. Another key factor is paying attention to scouting. Taking time to study players habits and teams plays
Klay Thompson recently hit 60 points in 29 minutes touching the ball for only 90 seconds. Where does this performance rank with you?
This year. That's a top 5 performance.
One always talks about Lebron and Curry, but one has to mention Russell Westbrook. He is averaging triple double stats at the moment. Is he stat wise the best player in the world right now?
Without a doubt. Nobody has a motor like him.
Russell Westbrook obviously has gotten a lot of attention with his constant triple doubles, but James Harden is doing the same thing with the Houston Rockets. Where do you see him head to head against Westbrook as best point guard at the moment in the NBA?
All though Westbrooks stat lines are out of this world, Hardens team has the better record so maybe Harden gets the nod for best PG.
Which 2 clubs will make the Superbowl and who will win it all?
