Thomas
Scrubb
Thomas Scrubb (198-F-91) is a 25 year old 198cm forward from Vancouver, Canada that will play his second professional season in Germany with the Giessen 46ers and recently completed his rookie season with Joensuun Kataja Basket (Finland-Korisliiga) playing 40 games and averaging 14.1ppg, 7.5rpg, 1.9apg, 1.3spg, FGP-1 (62.8%), 3PT-1 (44.4%), FT: 79.0%; FIBA Europe Cup: 12 games: 12.3ppg, 8.1rpg, 2.2apg, 1.3spg, FGP: 65.4%, 3PT: 37.5%, FT: 86.4%. He played at Carleton University (CIS) from 2010-2015 with his brother and combined they won 16 titles with 10 CIS titles and 6 OUA titles. As a senior at Carleton he played 24 games averaging 17.5ppg, 8.5rpg, 3.5apg, FGP: 53.9%, 3PT: 49.0%, FT: 76.4%. He spoke to eurobasket after the 69-52 win at home against the Fraport Skyliners

Thomas congrats on the big 69-52 win against the Fraport Skyliners. The last time Giessen beat Frankfurt at home, you were 11years old. How does that make you feel knowing you had a big part in the win with 21 points?

Thanks. It definitely felt good to win. I am not too familiar with the Giessen Frankfurt rivalry but I could tell how much it meant to the fans so I am happy we were able to give them a win.

How disappointed were you that your brother Philip Scrubb couldn't play. How difficult has it been waiting to finally compete against him as a professional?

Its been tough for Phil. I just want him to be back on the court as soon as possible. It would have been fun to play him since we've never had that opportunity but it just wasn't meant to be.

How much of a difference would the appearance of Philip Scrubb made in this game? Is that sharp shooter coupled with that all around stellar play that your brother has missing for Frankfurt?

He definitely would have made a difference. They have a lot of new players so him being there last year and playing with some of those guys in that system would make their offence a bit more fluent.

Do you feel like the disappointment of the bitter 79-77 loss against Bamberg coupled with the intense rivalry of the Hessen derby gave the team an extra push to perform above standards?

We were really motivated after the loss against Bamberg. Even after our tough loss against Munich we realized we could compete with everyone in this league at home so we just wanted to play our game and get a win. In the Munich, Bamberg, and Frankfurt games you could tell how much it meant to the fans so after a couple really close losses it was good to finally win.

Giessen kept the Fraport Skyliners to 23 points in the first half. What was key on the defensive end to stifling the opponent?

We just wanted to pressure them and get them out of their sets. Everyone did a good just being active on the ball and making them take tough shots.

In the third quarter the Giessen 46ers totally broke open the game powering home 24 points. What adjustments did you make on the offensive end finally cracking the tough Frankfurt defense that also didn't defend badly?

We just started to focus more on offence and make sure we executed well. Since we were playing good defense we were able to get out in transition and get easier baskets.

I remember last season you saw your brother play in Frankfurt. What is wrong with the Fraport Skyliners? They have the talent, but from you standpoint and what you saw on the court what is missing from this team for success?

A lot is different with the team from last year. The head coach hasnt been there and maybe 5 or 6 guys who played major minutes left the team. Their German players are all really young with not much BBL experience too so I think they are still getting used to playing with each other.

How much of a factor is that vocal leader and team chemistry with the Fraport Skyliners?

I am not really too sure since I am not with the team. Chemistry and leadership are important to any team though so I a sure they are still working on coming together.

You had a great a game with 21 points, five rebounds, four assists and five steals. Do you feel like this was your best game of the season?

Yeah it was probably my best game. I just wanted to come out with confidence after not having shot too well the past month.

The Giessen 46ers are 5-5 and have been up and down. Does the fact that you played Bamberg, Munich and Ulm very tight and tough keep the self-confidence of the team high?

Even though we are 5-5 I 'hink we have been up and down in terms of our level of play. Our only really bad games were against Tubigen and Bayreuth. Our other losses were tough ones and in 2 of them we could have easily won had we gotten stops near the end. We feel we can compete with anybody at the point so we just need to make sure we bring energy and focus to every game.

The Giessen 46ers don't have the most talent in the league or experience and need constant support from Cameron Wells, Justin Sears, Skyler Bowlin and you. What has been the biggest strength of head coach Denis Wucherer that once again has formed a very good team out of not the most potent resources?

I think he really puts an emphasis on team play. We try and play a lot of guys so during the week everyone has to practice hard to fight for minutes. I also think he lets guys play their game and be comfortable trying to make plays for the team.

What have you learned to appreciate the most from the games of Wells, Sears and Bowlin this season on the court?

Cam is always very composed on the court. He always seems to be going at his own pace and getting the shot that he wants. Justin may have an unorthodox game but he's very tough to stop on the offensive glass and is very mobile for a big guy. I appreciate how Skyler competes every day. He i a guy who has won championships in other leagues so you can tell that he has a winners mentality.

You are having a very solid season and have had no adjustment period in the BBL. How vital has your basketball IQ and overall versatility for being able to perform so well?

I think my summer with the national team really helped prepare me for the BBL. It gave me a chance to play some top levels players and figure out what I needed to do to have success against them. In the Olympic qualifying tournament I had some pretty good moments and some bad moments so I just wanted to come into this season and show that I belonged at the highest level.

Do you feel like you could be even more efficient in the 27 minutes that you play per game? How do you feel can you get even better on the court with your play?

I just need to be more consistent with my shooting.

The next game is against top team Alba Berlin. How confident are you that the Giessen 46ers will be able to perform as well as they did against a Bamberg or Munich?

I am confident we can compete with everyone when we are at home. I don't know much about Berlin but I am sure they are a great team and we're going to have to be ready. Even though their record isn't as great as Bambergs or Bayerns if we prepare for them like they are that type of team we'll be fine.

Kevin Garnett has retired. Where do you rank him with the all-time best in the NBA at the power forward position?

I am not big on ranking guys all-time but since I have payed attention to the NBA he's easily a top 3 PF.

Do you see the Golden State Warriors going on a big winning streak soon or after the allstar break or where do you see the fate of this team?

They're losing in the first round.

What was the last movie that you saw?

I haven't seen a new movie since Captain America: Civil War in the summer.

Thanks Tommy For the chat.
