Athinaikos ends 2011/12 season with perfect record, wins another title - Apr 28, 2012
Finals, Game One: Athinaikos - Panathinaikos 76-69 OT (3-0)
Athinaikos just finished another impressive season in Greece. They grabbed 76-69 OT win against Panathinaikos tonight closing the Finals with perfect 3-0. Athinaikos entered to this series with 2-0 lead thanks to their victories during the regular season and after tonight's game they defended the championship title. This is the fourth straight league title for the club. The hosts trailed by 3 points after first quarter, but they rallied back to get the 5-point lead at the halftime and then Panathinaikos managed to tie the game at the end of regular time. However that was Athinaikos who was better in overtime eventually winning that period 18-11. They dominated on the defensive end, holding Panathinaikos to just 7 points in second quarter. Athinaikos made 17-of-20 free shots (85.0 percent) during the game. Worth to mention a great performance of international forward Katerina Sotiriou (187-F-84, agency: FCM) (187-84, agency: FCM) who helped to win the game recording 24 points and 9 rebounds. International guard Olga Hatzinikolaou (181-81) contributed with a double-double by scoring 15 points and 12 rebounds for the winners. The former international power forward Afroditi Kosma (187-83) answered with a double-double by scoring 15 points and 17 rebounds and American power forward Diana Delva (188-88, college: Hartford) added 19 points and 10 rebounds in the effort for Panathinaikos. Athinaikos was the regular season champion in Greece with perfect 22-0 record. They eliminated Panionios with 3-0 in the Semis. It is important to mention that Athinaikos already won the Greek Cup trophy three weeks ago.
Athinaikos is the 2012 Cup winner in Greece. They outplayed Esperides in the Big Final 57-50 to grab the trophy. The Final Four Tournament was played from April 6-8. Katerina Sotiriou (187-F-84, agency: FCM) led Athinaikos with 19 points and 9 rebounds. Olga Hatzinikolaou (181-G-81) also was great adding 12 points and 9 boards, while Zoi Kechagia (170-G-79) posted 11 points. In Esperides, Latoya Williams (193-C-87, college: Chipola JC) shined with 26 points. Their second player with double-digits in scoring (and at the same time the last one) was Haily Dunham (188-G-87, agency: Merit Sports, college: USC) with 10 pts. Athinaikos eliminated Panathinaikos in the Semifinals 71-61. Esperides was better than Panionios 69-57. Teams will now focus on League Playoffs. The Semifinals start next weekend.
