Kostas
Papanikolaou
LIVE from OAKA: Hellas - Romania 102-57
The first official game of the new Hellenic NT took place in the Olympic stadium arena this afternoon. Jonas Kazlauskas present the newly established Hellenic NT over nearly 5,000 fans being at the beginning quite suspicious of what they going to see in an NT without Diamantidis, Tsartsaris, Vassilopoulos and Papaloukas. The result was magnificent as they saw an amazing duet in the center position with the newly shaped Shortsianitis being amazing and the massive and full of passion, Kosta Koufos (213-F/C-89, college: Ohio St.) showing that he is more mature in his game than ever, while the young Nick Kalathis (200-G-89) and Kostas Papanikolaou (203-F/G-90) can play and help the NT for many years to come, lastly the older Kostas Kaimakoglou (206-C/F-83) and Giannis Kalambokis (195-G-78) performed an amazing and solid game against the very weak team of Romania. It is most certain that the opponent was not really to be judged a lot but the Hellene players showed that the new Hellenic NT will have more speed, more fast breaks, less defense and more fight in the paint, these are facts that came out to the game this afternoon. The basic body of the NT meaning Bourousis, Fotsis, Zisis, and Spanoulis presented a more solid and mature game by guiding also all the youngsters in this new era of the Hellenic NT. Top scorer of the game in this first open doors game was Kosta Koufos with 15 followed by Spanoulis and Schortsianitis with 10 and 13 respectevely while Giannis Kalambokis and Nick Kalathis scored 8 and 7 respectively with the Greek-American adding 8 assists. It is worth mentioned that the debut of the young Kostas Papanikolaou was 100% sucessfull as he scored 9 points, 3 rebounds and 2 block shots in less than 15 minutes! The quarters were: 24-13, 56-18, 72-37, and 102-57
So the new elements of the Hellenic NT comes from Nick Kalathis (speed), Big Sofo and Kosta Koufos (power in the paint), maturity and good organization by Giannis Kalambokis, Spanoulis, and Zzisis) very good balance in the position 3 (Kostas Kaimakoglou, Perperoglou and Fotsis) and tough defense when needed (Printezis, Kostas Papanikolaou, Schortsianitis and Kosta Koufos)
