American forward Deon Thompson (203-F-88) put on an extraordinary performance in the last round for Ikaros Kallitheas, receiving a Eurobasket.com Player of the Week award for round 13. The 22-year old player had a double-double of 21 points and 15 rebounds, while his team edged out Aris (#6, 7-6) 64-62. Ikaros maintains the 9th position in Greek A1. Ikaros is a typical solid league team placed somewhere in the middle or a little bit lower in the standings. They need more victories to improve their 6-7 record. Thompson turned to be Ikaros' top player in his first season with the team. Former University of North Carolina star has very solid stats this year. Thompson is in league's top in rebounds (2nd best: 9.6rpg), assists (3rd best: 0.6apg) and averages impressive 1.5bpg.
The second best player in last round's games was 27-year old American Steven Smith (203-F-83) of Panellinios. Smith had a very good evening with a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds. Bad luck as Panellinios lost that game 73-80 to the higher-ranked Panathinaikos (#2, 12-1). Panellinios is still in a red zone at 13th spot in the standings. 10 lost games are too many comparing to just three victories Panellinios managed to get this year. Smith is a newcomer at Panellinios, but is already one of team's top players. He belongs to the best scorers in the league with 16.8ppg (#3). He also registered 11.2 boards per game.
Third on the list of top players last round was American guard Terell Castle (182-G-72, agency: Court Side) of AEK Athens (#11). Castle scored 23 points and passed eight assists. Despite Castle's great performance AEK lost 75-78 to slightly higher-ranked Panionios (#10, 6-7). But his team cannot count on just a single player as he also needs help of the other teammates. The chances of AEK not to end season at such low position in the league, however are less than slim as they have already lost 8 games, recording just four victories. With bigger assistance of his teammates, Castle could try to bring AEK's a little bit higher in the standings. Castle has a very solid season. In 12 games in Greece he scored 9.3ppg.
Other top performing players last week: 4. David Huertas (196-G-87) of Marousi - 22 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists 5. Jimmy Baxter (198-G-80) of Ilysiakos - 19 points and 6 rebounds 6. He also played 4 games in FIBA Europe Cup where he got 11.8ppg, 1.5rpg and 5.8apg. Ukic also spent pre-season at KK Split in Croatian league that year. In 2005 he was drafted by Toronto Raptors (NBA) in second round (41st overall). Ukic has been also a member of Croatian international program for some years. He has regularly played for Croatian senior team since 2002 and previously for U18 National Team back in 2002. Ukic represented Croatia at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) this year. His stats at that event were 5 games: 5.4ppg, 3.6rpg, 3.2apg, 1.2spg, FGP: 41.2%, 3PT: 28.6%, FT: 50.0%. Ukic is quite experienced player. He has played also professionally in Spain (FC Barcelona and Laboral Kutxa), Turkey (Fenerbahce), NBA (Milwaukee Bucks), Greece (Panathinaikos) and Croatia (Cedevita). Ukic could be described:
very quick point guard, with good court vision and a rare ability to penetrate; needs to add size and a reliable shot, and to mature in defense.
World Championships U18 '03 comments (by Yarone Arbel):
The star of the Croatian team. Led the senior team of Split to an historical championship in the last season. There is so much talent in the hands of Roko-Leni, that can fulfill his dream and make it to the NBA if he keeps developing.
Not another scorer that can lead the ball. Ukic is a true PG that can control the tempo of the game, with the ability to score on his own. Great penetration, his court vision and passing ability is very high, hit the 3 pointer, even under pressure, a clutch player that know how, want and can take the game on himself in the last minutes. Maybe too much sometimes, but in time experience will fix that too. Hard worker on defense and a great stealer, but not a huge defensive player. Still way too weak but talent is just oozing out of him. One big pleasure. Led all players in steals+assists+blocks-turnovers ratio, 4th in points, 5th in assists and 3rd in steals. What more can you ask for?.
19-year old forward Efstratios Kalogerias (203-97). He has played for the last two years at the junior team of Olympiacos in the A1.
