Greece and especially Greek basketball has a new representative in the Guinness book of records. Sony Athinaikos got an easy win against Kronos Agiou Dimitriou 61:82 recording their 91th consecutive win in the Greek league. This achievement gives them the first place in the list of the teams with biggest winning streaks, as they overcame the previous one of 90 games which held the UConn women team so far.

The team from Athens has been unbeaten since 2008, when they lost for the last round of the A1 league against Paghiakos. From the beginning of the season 2008-09 up to now, they have not lost a single game in the league, showing their superiority and winning the national championship without great effort.

This great success belongs to everyone in the team beginning from all the coaches that guided the team, Georgios Dikeoulakos (agency: FCM ), Ioannis Ktistakis and Giorgos Zeugolis , up to all the players that participated even in at least one game. Though, the biggest credit should be given to Dimitra Kalentzou (174-G-78), Olga Hatzinikolaou (181-G-81), Lolita Lymoura (180-G-85, agency: LBM Management), Zoi Kechagia (170-G-79), Katerina Chalikia (185-F-79), Afroditi Kosma (187-F/C-83) and the American LaToya Davis (even if the two last ones are not in the team any more), as they played in the majority of those games.

Last but not least, the person that deserves all the felicitations for this is the owner and President of the club Mr. Nikolaos Hardalias, a person that during a very tough financially period not only for Greek basketball but the whole country, keeps this team at such a high level.

Athinaikos will not stop after this accomplishment. They are determined to also win this year's championship without losing and keep this record going as far as possible. And this is something that they have proved to be more than capable of!

A1 Round 7: Panathinaikos beat Dafni Agioy in a derby game - 2 days ago

Panathinaikos dominated down low during the game scoring 42 of its points in the paint compared to Dafni Agioy's 22. Am...   [read more]

Artemis Spanou selected the top Greek playing abroad in last week's games - 6 days ago

We bring you last week's top performances from Greeks who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level. This week's number one is an international forward Artemis Spanou (188-93). She could not help one of league's weakest teams Argon Uni Girona (9-1) in their last game. Despite Spanou's good performance Argon Uni Girona lost 76-85 on the road to the leading Perfumerias Avenida.    [read more]
