Zoi Dimitrakou (188-F-87, agency: Josep and Nicolas), belongs to the new generation of Greek, young and talented basketball players. She is currently showing her talents in France and we will try to get to know her, a little bit better.
Hey Zoi, tell us some things about yourself? In which team you are in France and since when? How come you decided to go to France and play? You'll be there next year, too?
Zoi: 'This season I am playing for, FCB Charleville-Mezieres.Persy. Last year I was also in France, but a little southern, in Aix en Provence. My agent told me about this team, a few years ago, when I was 21 years old. I was back then, the top scorer of the A1 league. As for next year, I have lots of offers from many teams, not only from France. I dont know yet what to decide, but I am happy here, for sure'.
Which is the style of basketball, you like playing the most and what is your 'deadliest' moves in the court?
Zoi: 'I like the quick play, the transition game. I love the fast breaks and I try to be creative, all the time. The ideal situation for me is, stealing the ball in defense and make an easy penetration in the other teams basket, when we attack. My strongest move is definitely the penetration, cause most of the times I am taller from the other guards who playing defense on me. So I can easily put them in my back, in the low post'.
How is your life in France? In a personal level and in the level of playing the game you love.
Zoi: 'I have completely adjusted to the French mentality. The level of basketball here is very high and all the people who gets involve, are extremely professionals. Personally, I am double happy cause this year, I have my fiance with me, Corey Belser. Corey, is playing for the mens team of Charleville, L'etoile'.
Which are the goals of the team youre playing?
Zoi: 'We want to be among the 8 first teams of the standings, in the regular season and then, we'll try to conquer a seed which lead to next season's Eurocup'.
You are still very young, only 24 years old. What do you want to succeed, in the rest of your career? Maybe playing in the euroleague sometime or in the WNBA, why not.
Zoi: 'I definitely want to play in the euroleague sometime and I will go for it. As you said, why not in the WNBA too. Generally, I want every year, to succed something more'.
I must ask you about the Greek women national team. There has been an amazing progress. Every year, you getting over yourselves. Are you optimistic for the future? Can this team, establish its participations to the World championships and Eurobaskets?
Zoi: 'It's true that, there has been a great progress, especially if we consider the quality of the Greek championship, which every year, is getting lower and lower. I thing it's very early to talk about constant participations to World championships. But we must keep the mentality we have, to taking things step by step. This year, for example, we have in front of us, the challenge of the qualification to the next Eurobasket. I am optimistic about the national team. It will always be, my favorite team.

Olympiacos are crowned A1 champions. They survived a double-overtime drama against Panathinaikos to post the decisive victory. It all came down to the final seconds in the second overtime. Vassilis Spanoulis stepped up with late heroics for the visitors. He drained a massive three-pointer and carried the Reds to the trophy. The guests trailed by 4 points at the halftime before their 21-15 charge in the third quarter, which allowed them to level things up. Worth to mention a great performance of the former international Vassilis Spanoulis (193-82, agency: BeoBasket) who helped to win the game recording 25 points and 6 assists and Liberian-American power forward Othello Hunter (203-86, college: Ohio St., agency: David Lee Services) who added 14 points and 7 rebounds during the contest. Olympiacos' coach Giannis Sfairopoulos used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. AEK Athens earned the Bronze medals. They defeated Aris to win the consolation final series 3-1. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Aris won fourth quarter 17-16. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Aris was plagued by 28 personal fouls down the stretch. Americans were the main players on the court. The winners were led by swingman Malik Hairston (198-87, college: Oregon) who scored that evening 24 points and 5 assists (on 9-of-11 shooting from the field) and point guard J'Covan Brown (188-90, college: Texas) supported him with 22 points. Even 16 points and 7 rebounds by forward Okaro White (206-92, college: Florida St.) did not help to save the game for Aris. Point guard Dominic Waters (185-86, college: Portland St., agency: Pensack Sports) added 17 points for lost side. Four Aris players scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Icelandic Sigurdur Thorsteinsson (204-C-88) had a very impressive game in the last round for Doxa Pefkon and that's him to receive a Eurobasket.com A2 Player of the Week award for round 30. The 27-year old center had the game-high 18 points adding seven rebounds for Doxa Pefkon in his team's victory, helping them to beat Iraklis (#9, 12-16) 73-66. The game was not the highest importance and did not have significant influence on top of the standings. Doxa Pefkon maintains the 11th position in Greek A2. Doxa Pefkon is rather a weak team placed in lower part in the standings. They need more victories to improve their 11-17 record. It was one of impressive evenings for Thorsteinsson as usually he does not deliver so high stats. Sigurdur Thorsteinsson averages this season 11.9ppg and 7.9rpg.
The second most remarkable performance in last round's games was 30-year old power forward Savvas Manousos (208-F/C-85) of Doxa Lefkadas. Manousos impressed basketball fans with a double-double of 22 points and 11 rebounds. Bad luck as Doxa Lefkadas lost that game 72-78 to the lower-ranked Psyhiko (#8, 14-14). Doxa Lefkadas managed to keep the same 5th spot in the standings. His team lost some distance to top teams. But 16-12 record is not bad and everything may still change. Manousos is a newcomer at Doxa Lefkadas and despite he is not a team leader yet, every game he becomes more reliable player. Hopefully performances like the last one will happen more often.
The third best performed player last round was Dimitris Despos (209-C-76) of Iraklis (#9). Despos showcased his all-around game by recording 13 points, ten rebounds and four assists in the last round. Despite Despos' great performance Iraklis lost 66-73 to slightly lower-ranked Doxa Pefkon (#11, 11-17). But his team cannot count on just a single player as he also needs help of the other teammates. The chances of Iraklis ranking at the top of the league, however are very questionable as they have already lost 16 games, recording just twelve victories. With bigger assistance of his teammates, Despos could help Iraklis to bring them higher in the standings. Despos has a great season in Greece. After 28 games, he made it on the list of the league's leaders in rebounds with 7.3rpg (8th best).
Other top performing players last week: 4. Mihalis Kakiouzis (206-F-76) of Faros - 19 points and 4 rebounds 5. Kostas Totsios (191-G-78) of Ethnikos - 20 points and 3 rebounds 6. Thomas Nikou (185-PG-80) of Psyhiko - 11 points and 8 assists 7. Stavros Toutziarakis (210-C-87) of Kymis - 15 points, 10 rebounds and 2 assists 8. Angelos Tsamis (192-SG-81) of Promitheas - 16 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists 9. Efthimis Kothras (193-G-81) of Iraklis - 13 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists 10. Sakis Karydas (182-G-79) of Doxa Lefkadas - 15 points, 7 rebounds and 8 assists
The Player of the week is chosen based on efficiency calculation, but also including game result, importance of the game, if played recorded double-double/triple-double, etc. The efficiency formula is a combination of various formulas used by different basketball organizations/leagues. We got involved many basketball scouts and journalists to assure it's accuracy. The formula: 1.5*PTS + 3* (REB+AST+ST+BL-TO) - 2*BSAG - 4*PF + 3*PFRV + 4* (2FGPM+3FGPM) + 1.5*FTM - 3* (2FGPA-2FGPM) - 3* (3FGPA-3FGPM) - (FTA-FTM)
