A1 Round 6: Undefeated Panathinaikos lose their first game against Athinaikos - Nov 11, 2012

There was no lack of excitement in the last round games. The round ended with loss of the undefeated team and derby games.

The most crucial game of the last round was the first loss of undefeated Panathinaikos (5-1) in Athens on Saturday night. Visitors were edged by Athinaikos (6-0) 78-75. It ended at the same time the five-game winning streak of Panathinaikos. It was a key game for the top position in the league as both teams had the same 5-0 record before this meeting. It was a great shooting night for Athinaikos especially from behind the arc, where they had solid 66.7 percentage. The former international power forward Afroditi Kosma (187-83) scored 23 points and 6 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners and the former international guard Lolita Lymoura (180-85, agency: LBM Management) chipped in 7 points and 8 assists during the contest. The best for the losing side was American power forward Diana Delva (188-88, college: Hartford) with a double-double by scoring 27 points and 12 rebounds. Undefeated Athinaikos have an impressive six-game winning streak. Defending champion keeps a position of league leader, which they share with AO Ellinikou. Panathinaikos at the other side keeps the third place with one game lost. Athinaikos is looking forward to face Terpsithea (#7) in the next round where they are favorite. Panathinaikos' supporters also look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Athens Panionios.
Important game to mention about took place in Kronos. Eighth ranked Kronos AD (3-3) saved a 2-point derby victory at home edging 6th ranked Terpsithea (3-3) 67-65 in the game for the fifth place. The former international power forward Nena Nikolaidou (190-79) notched a double-double by scoring 21 points, 17 rebounds and 5 assists to lead the effort and Anastasia Gotzi supported her with 11 points and 5 assists. Even a double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds by international forward Anna Spyridopoulou (184-88) did not help to save the game for Terpsithea. Kronos AD moved-up to fifth place, which they share with Aris and Terpsithea. Kronos AD will play against league's leader AO Ellinikou in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Terpsithea will play against the league's second-placed Athinaikos (#2) in Athens and hopes to get back on the winning track.
Another interesting game was a derby match between two local teams from Thessaloniki: PAOK (#5) and Aris (#4). PAOK (4-2) smashed visiting Aris (3-3) by 34 points 70-36. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Aris. The best player for the winners was Anna Stamolamprou who scored 18 points. At the other side the best for losing team was Aleksandra Begenisic who recorded 16 points and 8 rebounds. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. PAOK moved-up to fourth place. Loser Aris dropped to the fifth position with three games lost. They share it with Kronos AD and Terpsithea. PAOK will meet Asteras (#10) in the next round where they are favorite. Aris will play against GAC Eunikos (#11) in Liosa and hope to secure a win.

It was a good game for Breanna Brock who led her team to a victory with 20 points and 7 rebounds. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Undefeated AO Ellinikou have an impressive six-game winning streak. Newly promoted AO Ellinikou maintains first position with 6-0 record, which they share with Athinaikos. GAC Eunikos at the other side still closes the standings with six games lost. AO Ellinikou's next round opponent will be Kronos AD (#5) at home. GAC Eunikos will play against Aris (#6) in Thessaloniki and hopes to get finally their first victory.

In the last game of round 6 Asteras lost to Ikaros Kalitheas on the opponent's court 59-74.
The most impressive stats of the last round was 35 points (!!!), 17 rebounds and 5 blocks by Jasmine Erving of Ikaros Kalitheas.



Panionios - Olympiakos 49-57

Bottom-ranked Panionios (0-6) is still winless. This time they could not use their home court advantage losing their sixth consecutive match to tenth ranked Olympiakos (2-4) 57-49 on Sunday evening. The guests trailed by 1 point at the halftime before their 29-20 charge in the second half, which allowed them to win the game. Olympiakos forced 24 Panionios turnovers and outrebounded them 37-22 including 28 on the defensive glass. The former international forward Niki Zerva (183-79) had a double-double by scoring 21 points and 11 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners and guard Rafaela Soultani (172-91) chipped in 16 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists during the contest. The best for the losing side was forward Enisa Semaniakou (183-88) with 15 points and 6 rebounds and forward Zafiria Giabani (185-92) scored 12 points and 5 rebounds. Olympiakos moved-up to eighth place, which they share with Asteras and Ikaros Kalitheas. Loser Panionios still closes the standings with six games lost. Olympiakos will face Ikaros Kalitheas (#8) in Glyfada in the next round. The best player for the winners was point guard Anna Stamolamprou (171-95) who scored 18 points. The former international guard Nafsika Stavridou (182-86) chipped in 13 points and 5 assists. At the other side the best for losing team was Bosnian center Aleksandra Begenisic (193-89) who recorded 16 points and 8 rebounds and guard Roula Mouli (177-85) added 3 points and 4 assists respectively. There was a minor upset in Glyfada where 7th ranked Asteras (2-4) was defeated by ninth ranked Ikaros Kalitheas (2-4) 74-59 on Saturday. American center Jasmine Erving (187-90, college: CS Northridge) had a double-double by scoring 35 points (!!!), 17 rebounds and 5 blocks to lead the charge for the winners and the former international guard Theoni Tzegianaki (162-85) chipped in 17 points, 6 rebounds and 11 assists during the contest. Ikaros Kalitheas' coach Giorgos Leivadis used a ten-player rotation and allowed the starting five to rest. The best for the losing side was center Katerina Glyniadaki (196-86, college: Cal-Riverside) with a double-double by scoring 10 points and 14 rebounds and American forward Katerina Deli (168, college: Scranton) scored 14 points and 4 assists. Ikaros Kalitheas moved-up to eighth place, which they share with Asteras and Olympiakos. Ikaros Kalitheas will face Olympiakos (#9) in Athens in the next round.

PAOK Thessalonikis (A1) inked 25-year old American center Ondrea Shaw (193-91, college: E.Carolina). She played in the summer at SC Rip in Australian QBL. In 17 games she recorded 6.9ppg, 8.8rpg, 1.0apg and 2.6bpg. Among other achievements Shaw's team made it to the AAC Tournament Semifinals in 2015.
