Evanthia Maltsi selected the top Greek playing abroad in last week's games - Nov 22, 2012

  follow us on Facebook Twitter

Traditionally, every week we bring you a list of the top performances of Greeks who are currently playing abroad.

Evanthia Maltsi
Evanthia Maltsi
#1. This week's number one is an experienced international forward Evanthia Maltsi (180-78, agency: Josep and Nicolas, currently plays in Eurocup). She led her Turkish team Kayseri to a victory over the third-ranked Gorizont (1-2) 70-55 in the Eurocup in Thursday night's game. Maltsi was MVP of the game. She recorded 26 points (!!!) and had 4 steals (made all of her six free throws) in 35 minutes on the court. Pankup TED Kayseri Kolejspor (2-1) is placed first in group E. Maltsi's team will play only one more game in the Eurocup Regular Season. And that game will be critical. It's Maltsi's first season with the team. Maltsi is currently first on the list of top scorers with 25.7ppg. She also averaged so far 3.0rpg, 2.0apg, 2.7spg, 3FGP: 41.7% in the three games she played so far. Maltsi is currently a member of the Greek senior national team.

Stefanie Murphy
Stefanie Murphy
#2. Second place goes to former international power forward Stefanie Murphy (192-89, college: Boston Coll., currently plays in Eurocup). She contributed to an easy victory against the third-ranked TED Ankara (2-3) 82-66 in the Eurocup last Thursday. Murphy recorded a double-double by scoring 16 points and getting 10 rebounds. She also added 3 assists and 3 steals; quite an impressive performance considering it's only Murphy's second season in pro basketball. Union Saint-Amand Porte du Hainaut (4-0) is placed first in group B. So far her team won all four games in the Regular Season. There are only two games left until the end of the Eurocup Regular Season. So now every game is very crucial. Murphy has relatively good stats this season: 14.3ppg, 9.0rpg, 2.0apg, 2FGP: 58.1%(25-43). She is a naturalized American. Murphy played for the Greek national team in 2010. Strangely she has never played in Greece.

Peli Papamichail
Peli Papamichail
#3. The Greek player who performed third best last week abroad was an international power forward Peli Papamichail (189-86, also represented by Josep and Nicolas, currently plays in Italy). Papamichail contributed to an easy victory against the 13th-ranked Siena (0-8) crushing them 79-44 in the Italian A2 (12th division) on Sunday night. She had a double-double by scoring 14 points and getting 17 rebounds. Papamichail also added 2 blocks and 4 steals in 29 minutes. Passalacqua Spedizioni Ragusa (8-0) is placed first in South group. So far her team won all eight games in the Regular Season. This year Papamichail has relatively solid stats: 12.1ppg, 8.8rpg, 1.3spg, 2FGP: 62.5%(40-64) and FT: 85.0% in the eight games. She is also a member of the Greek senior national team.

Katerina Sotiriou
Katerina Sotiriou
#4. Forward Katerina Sotiriou (186-84, agency: FCM, currently plays in Spain), who plays in the Spanish LFB could not help Navarra Pamplona (3-2) to beat Caja Rural (3-3). Sotiriou scored 8 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Navarra Pamplona was defeated 75-63 on the road by the lower-ranked Caja Rural (#6). But this is still an early stage of the season and everything may happen. Sotiriou's overall stats this year are: 6.6ppg, 5.6rpg and 1.2apg. She is also Greek national team player.

Olga Chatzinikolaou
Olga Chatzinikolaou
#5. International swingman Olga Chatzinikolaou (181-81, currently plays in Spain) faced previously mentioned Katerina Sotiriou in the Spanish LFB last game. Chatzinikolaou managed to help Tintos de Toro Caja Rural Zamora in a victory against the closely-ranked Navarra Pamplona (3-2) 75-63. She scored only 4 points, had 6 rebounds and dished 4 assists in 34 minutes. But the season just started, so everything may happen. This year Chatzinikolaou's overall stats are: 9.2ppg, 6.3rpg, 2.2apg and 2.3spg in the six games. She plays currently for the Greek national team.

One more player who has never been selected to any of national teams, but has Greek passport:

#1. Vicky Volonaki (179-F-80, currently plays in Sweden), who plays in the Swedish Damligan could not help Solna Vikings (5-4) in their last game on Sunday. Despite Volonaki's very good performance Solna Vikings was defeated 80-74 at home by the lower-ranked Norrkoping Dolphins (#4). She scored 15 points. It was his first game for Solna Vikings this season.
