A1 Round 8: AO Ellinikou hands first defeat to Athinaikos - Nov 25, 2012

The most crucial game of the last round was the first loss of undefeated Athinaikos (7-1) in Athens on Saturday night. Hosts were edged by AO Ellinikou (8-0) 68-65. It ended at the same time the seven-game winning streak of Athinaikos. It was a key game for the top position in the league as both teams had the same 7-0 record before this meeting. Athinaikos trailed by 12 points after 3 quarters before a 17-8 run in the last quarter cut the deficit to 65-68 at the end of the game. The best player for the winners was American forward Breanna Brock (187-90, college: Missouri) who had a double-double by scoring 23 points and 19 rebounds. The former international forward Evina Stamati (180-84) chipped in 15 points. The former international power forward Afroditi Kosma (187-83) produced a double-double by scoring 24 points and 13 rebounds for the hosts. Athinaikos' coach rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Undefeated AO Ellinikou have an impressive eight-game winning streak. Newly promoted AO Ellinikou maintains first position with 8-0 record. Defending champion Athinaikos keeps the second place with one game lost. They share the position with Panathinaikos. AO Ellinikou are looking forward to face Terpsithea (#9) in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Athinaikos will play against Aris (#5) in Thessaloniki and is hoping to prove to their fans that this time they can win.
Bottom-ranked Panionios (0-8) tried to put together a comeback for its first victory of the season, but they fell short in the 75-54 loss to seventh ranked Ikaros Kalitheas (4-4) in Glyfada. American center Jasmine Erving (187-90, college: CS Northridge) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 36 points (!!!) and 13 rebounds. Theoni Tzegianaki contributed with 16 points, 8 assists and 6 steals for the winners. Forward Zafiria Giabani (185-92) replied with a double-double by scoring 13 points and 10 rebounds for Panionios. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Ikaros Kalitheas have a solid three-game winning streak. They moved-up to sixth place. Panionios at the other side still closes the standings with eight games lost. They share the position with GAC Eunikos. Ikaros Kalitheas will play against higher ranked Panathinaikos (#3) in Athens in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Panionios will play at home against PAOK (#4) in Thessaloniki and hopes to get finally their first victory.
Bottom-ranked GAC Eunikos (0-8) tried to put together a comeback for its first victory of the season, but they fell short in the 56-49 loss to tenth ranked Asteras (3-5) in Liosa on Saturday evening. Worth to mention a great performance of Katerina Glyniadaki who helped to win the game recording 11 points and 9 rebounds. Stefania Sideri responded with 13 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Asteras moved-up to seventh place, which they share with Kronos AD and Terpsithea. Loser GAC Eunikos still closes the standings with eight games lost. They share the position with Panionios. Asteras will meet at home Kronos AD (#7) in the next round. GAC Eunikos will play against Olympiakos (#10) in Athens and looks forward to get finally their first victory.

The winners were led by Diana Delva who had that evening a double-double by scoring 17 points and 18 rebounds. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Panathinaikos moved-up to second place, which they share with Athinaikos. Terpsithea lost third consecutive game. Newly promoted team dropped to the seventh position with five games lost. Panathinaikos' next round opponent will be Ikaros Kalitheas (#6) in Glyfada. Terpsithea will play against the league's leader AO Ellinikou.
The game in Kronos was also quite interesting. Fifth ranked Aris (5-3) played at the court of 6th ranked Kronos AD (3-5). Aris managed to secure a 7-point victory 60-53 on Saturday. The best player for the winners was Roula Mouli who scored 22 points and 6 rebounds. Aris maintains fifth position with 5-3 record. Loser Kronos AD dropped to the seventh place with five games lost. Aris will face league's second-placed Athinaikos in Athens in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Kronos AD will play on the road against Asteras (#8) in Athens and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

In the last game of round 8 Olympiakos was crushed by PAOK in Thessaloniki 83-52.



PAOK - Olympiakos 83-52

There was no surprise in Thessaloniki where 9th ranked Olympiakos (2-6) was crushed by fourth ranked PAOK (6-2) 83-52 on Sunday. The game was mostly controlled by PAOK. Olympiakos was better in third quarter 17-12. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They dominated on the defensive end, holding Olympiakos to just 7 points in second quarter. They outrebounded Olympiakos 47-24 including a 17-5 advantage in offensive rebounds. PAOK looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. The best player for the winners was Canadian forward Kayla Dykstra (188-87) who had a double-double by scoring 19 points and 16 rebounds. The former international forward Dimitra Giannopoulou (184-84) chipped in 16 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists. Four PAOK players scored in double figures. PAOK's coach felt very confident using entire bench and allowed the starting five to rest. The former international forward Niki Zerva (183-79) produced 23 points and 8 rebounds and Dimitra Chavale added 13 points and 5 rebounds respectively for the guests. PAOK have a solid three-game winning streak. They maintain fourth position with 6-2 record. Newly promoted Olympiakos dropped to the tenth place with six games lost. PAOK will face bottom-ranked Panionios (#12) in Athens in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Olympiakos will play at home against GAC Eunikos in Liosa and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Panionios was ahead by 13 points at the halftime before a 48-14 second half run of Ikaros Kalitheas. They dominated on the defensive end, holding Panionios to just 5 points in fourth quarter and to 14 points in second half. Ikaros Kalitheas forced 33 Panionios turnovers. GAC Eunikos - Asteras 49-56

Bottom-ranked GAC Eunikos (0-8) tried to put together a comeback for its first victory of the season, but they fell short in the 56-49 loss to tenth ranked Asteras (3-5) in Liosa on Saturday evening. The guests took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But GAC Eunikos won third quarter 16-13. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Asteras made 22-of-29 free shots (75.9 percent) during the game, while GAC Eunikos only scored four points from the stripe. Asteras forced 21 GAC Eunikos turnovers and outrebounded them 47-29 including 32 on the defensive glass. Worth to mention a great performance of center Katerina Glyniadaki (196-86, college: Cal-Riverside) who helped to win the game recording 11 points and 9 rebounds and forward Sotiria Marinou (173) who added 13 points during the contest. Guard Stefania Sideri (178-94) responded with 13 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists and Nikolina Ioannidou (174-94) scored 13 points and 5 rebounds. Hatay Bsb (KBSL) signed 33-year old Greek point guard Aristea Maglara (168-83). She moved there from GS Kronos Agiou Dimitriou in Greek A1 league where she played this season. In 18 games she had 5.8ppg, 2.3rpg and 2.7apg. The last season Maglara played at Olympiacos Pireus (A1) in Greece. In 20 games she recorded just 2.7ppg, 1.5rpg and 1.8apg.
