Here is the weekly review of the top performing Greek players, who play currently abroad.


Nick Calathes

   #1. This week's number one is an international point guard Nick Calathes (198-89, college: Florida, currently plays in Russia), who plays in the Russian PBL. He could not help Lokomotiv (4-5) in their last game. Despite Calathes' very good performance Lokomotiv lost 100-104 on the road to the second-ranked Khimky. He had a double-double by scoring 33 points and making 10 passes in 38 minutes on the court. It's Calathes' first season with the team. Calathes belongs to league's best passers and is ranked #5 with 4.0apg. He also averaged so far 12.6ppg, 4.9rpg, 2FGP: 53.8%, 3FGP: 33.3% and FT: 47.2% in the seven games he played so far. Calathes is a naturalized American. He is currently a member of the Greek senior national team. Calathes used to play for 3-year contract with Panathinaikos Athens in Greek league.

Kostas Koufos

   #2. Second place goes to an international center Kostas Koufos (213-89, college: Ohio St., currently plays in NBA), who plays in the NBA. He was not able to help the Denver Nuggets (16-14) in their last game on Tuesday. Despite Koufos' very good performance the Denver Nuggets were defeated 112-100 in Los Angeles by the Clippers. He recorded a double-double by scoring 16 points and getting 10 rebounds. Koufos has relatively good stats this season: 7.6ppg, 6.3rpg, 1.8bpg, 2FGP: 59.8%(98-164) and FT: 58.5%. He is a naturalized American. Koufos played for the Greek national team in 2011. Strangely he has never played in Greece.

   #3. The Greek player who performed third best last week abroad was an international swingman Kostas Vasiliadis (200-84, agency: FCM, currently plays in Spain). Vasiliadis led Gescrap BB to an easy victory against the 12th-ranked UCAM Murcia (6-8) crushing them 98-75 in the Spanish ACB in Wednesday night's game. He recorded 16 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. Gescrap Bizkaia Bilbao Basket (10-4) is placed fourth in the ACB. This season Vasiliadis has relatively solid stats: 14.2ppg, 3.1rpg, 2.1apg, 2FGP: 54.3%, 3FGP: 38.9% and FT: 88.0%. He is also a member of the Greek senior national team.

   #4. Guard Nikolaos Zisis (197-83, currently plays in Spain) is a teammate of previously mentioned Kostas Vasiliadis and both played together in the last Spanish ACB game. Zisis led Gescrap BB to an easy victory against the 12th-ranked UCAM Murcia (6-8) crushing them 98-75. He recorded 11 points and added 6 assists in 30 minutes. Zisis is currently fifth on the league's list of best passers with 3.9apg. This year he also averages: 7.2ppg and 2.0rpg in the 14 games. Zisis is also Greek national team player.

International power forward Ian Vougioukas (212-85, college: St.Louis, currently plays in Russia) was the major contributor in an Unics Kazan's victory against the closely-ranked Triumph Lyubertsy (3-6) crushing them 93-68 in the Russian PBL on Friday night. He scored 18 points, had 5 rebounds, passed 3 assists and added 2 blocks. Unics Kazan (3-4) is placed sixth in the PBL. But this is still an early stage of the season and everything may happen. Vougioukas is the league's best blocker. He has very reliable stats this season: 12.0ppg, 4.3rpg, 1.3apg and 1.3bpg. Vougioukas plays currently for the Greek national team.

   #6. Power forward Kostas Kaimakoglou (206-83, currently plays in Russia) is a teammate of previously mentioned Ian Vougioukas and both played together in the last Russian PBL game. Kaimakoglou led Unics Kazan to a victory over the closely-ranked Triumph Lyubertsy (3-6) crushing them 93-68. He was MVP of the game. Kaimakoglou scored 19 points and added 3 assists in only a mere 14 minutes. Kaimakoglou is ranked fifth on the list of the top scorers in the league and also on the list of best rebounders (seventh place). This year he has very good stats: 14.8ppg, 6.3rpg, 1.5apg and 1.3spg in the four games. Kaimakoglou is an international player who is currently on the senior Greek National Team roster.

Loukas Mavrokefalidis

   #7. International center Loukas Mavrokefalidis (207-84, currently plays in Russia) was the main contributor in a 1-point Spartak St.Petersburg's victory against one of league's weakest teams BC Nizhny Novgorod (2-6) 68-67 in the Russian PBL last Sunday. He was the best player in that game. Mavrokefalidis recorded 11 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. Spartak St.Petersburg (6-3) is placed third in the PBL. Mavrokefalidis' overall stats this season are: 9.8ppg, 4.7rpg, 1.8apg and 1.2bpg. He used to play for the Greek national team last year.

   #8. Center Stavros Toutziarakis (210-87, also represented by FCM, currently plays in Sweden) contributed to an easy victory against one of league's weakest teams Eco Orebro (3-15) 90-73 in the Swedish Basketligan on Friday night. Toutziarakis was the top player that evening. He scored 23 points and added 3 passes in 27 minutes. Solna Vikings (11-7) is placed fifth in the Basketligan. It was his team's fourth consecutive victory in a row. Toutziarakis belongs to league's best rebounders and is ranked #6 with 8.2rpg. This year his other stats are: 12.6ppg and 1.2apg in the 17 games. Toutziarakis used to play for the Greek U20 national team back in 2007.

   #9. International forward Antonis Fotsis (209-81, currently plays in Italy) was not able to secure a victory for Armani Milano (6-6) in their game against Cimberio Varese (11-1) in the Italian SerieA. He scored 8 points, had 6 rebounds and dished 3 assists. Armani Milano was defeated 83-77 in Varese by the leading Cimberio. Fotsis' overall stats this season are: 7.7ppg and 4.0rpg. He is also in the roster of the Greek national team.

   #10. An experienced forward Nikos Barlos (203-79, currently plays in Italy), who plays in the Italian Lega2 (second division) couldn't help C.de Latte BRE (6-5) in their last game. Despite Barlos' good performance C.de Latte BRE lost 93-97 at home to the lower-ranked (#9) LeGamberi Foods Forlì. He had a double-double by scoring 14 points and getting 11 rebounds. Barlos also added 3 assists and 4 steals in 34 minutes. Barlos has reliable stats this year: 11.5ppg, 5.5rpg and 1.9spg in the 11 games. He is a former international player as seven years ago he still played for the Greek senior national team.

   #11. Former U18 international forward Fotios Lampropoulos (206-83, currently plays in Spain) couldn't help CB Canarias in their game against Caja Laboral in the Spanish ACB. He scored 6 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in 23 minutes. His team was badly defeated by 19 points 81-62. This year Lampropoulos' overall stats are: 7.2ppg, 3.4rpg and 1.1apg in the 14 games. He used to play for the Greek U18 national team nine years ago.

   #12. U18 international swingman Ioannis Papapetrou (203-94, currently plays college basketball in the States) contributed to an Texas' surprising victory against the University of North Carolina 85-67 in the NCAA in Wednesday night's game. Papapetrou recorded a double-double by scoring 10 points and getting the same number of rebounds. Papapetrou averaged so far 13.5ppg and 1.9rpg. He is also in the roster of the Greek U18 national team.

   #13. Former international guard Emmanouil Papamakarios (192-80, currently plays in Spain) couldn't help Lagun Aro GBC in their game against Real Madrid in the Spanish ACB. Papamakarios cannot count Sunday's game as one of the best ones. He scored only 3 points, grabbed 4 rebounds and dished 3 assists. His team was defeated 85-71. Papamakarios' total stats this season are: 2.7ppg, 1.8rpg and 1.4apg. He used to play for the Greek national team seven years ago.

   #14. Former international forward Christos Tapoutos (203-82, currently plays in Turkey) couldn't help Olin Edirne in their game against Besiktas in the Turkish TBL. Tapoutos cannot count Sunday's game as one of the best ones. He scored only 3 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 22 minutes. His team was badly defeated by 16 points 83-67. This year Tapoutos' total stats are: 8.0ppg and 4.1rpg in the nine games. He used to play for the Greek national team back in 2005.

   #15. Former U18 international swingman John Sinis (206-91, currently studies in the States) couldn't help the San Diego in their game against the Oregon State University in the NCAA. Sinis scored 9 points in 20 minutes. His team lost 79-86. He has averaged so far 6.5ppg, 2.2rpg and 3.0apg in the 12 games. Sinis used to play for the Greek U18 national team three years ago.


The list of other players, who all have Greek passport but never been selected to any of Greek national teams:

   #1. Pat Calathes (208-G/F-85, college: St.Joseph's, currently plays in Israel) led Maccabi Haifa to a victory over the eighth-ranked Ironi Ashkelon (4-6) 111-94 in the Israeli Winner League on Sunday night. Calathes was MVP of the game. He had a double-double by scoring 27 points and getting 12 rebounds. Calathes also added 3 assists in 34 minutes. Maccabi Bazan Haifa (7-3) is placed third in the Winner League. Calathes is currently fifth on the list of best rebounders with 9.6rpg. This year his other stats are: 14.5ppg and 2.6apg in the 10 games he played so far. Calathes is a naturalized American. He used to play for Costa Cafe Marousi in Greek league.

   #2. Sten-Timmu Sokk (181-PG-89, currently plays in Georgia) contributed to an easy victory against the league outsider STU (0-10) crushing them 96-75 in a derby game in the Georgian Superleague on Wednesday night. Sokk recorded 14 points, 4 rebounds and 5 assists. Olimpi Tbilisi (8-2) is placed third in the Superleague. It was his team's fourth consecutive victory in a row. The Regular Season already ended. Sokk is currently second on the league's list of best passers. His overall stats this season are: 9.2ppg, 3.4rpg, 6.6apg and 1.1spg. Sokk has a dual citizenship: Greek and Estonian.

   #3. Mannos Nakos (179-PG-88, currently plays in Sweden) contributed to an easy victory against the league outsider Nassjo (3-15) crushing them 95-71 in the Swedish Basketligan last Friday. Nakos scored 10 points and added 3 passes. Uppsala Basket (13-5) is placed second in the Basketligan. Nakos has been at the team for four years. His total stats this season are: 6.1ppg and 1.8apg. Nakos is another player who holds two passports: Greek and Swedish.

   #4. Angelo Tsagarakis (190-G-84, currently plays in France) contributed to Chalons-Reims' victory against the closely-ranked Nantes (8-6) 73-66 in the French ProB (second division) on Wednesday night. He recorded 14 points in 28 minutes. Chalons-Reims (11-5) is placed fourth in the ProB. Tsagarakis' stats this year are: 13.5ppg and 1.9rpg in the 16 games. He has both Greek and French nationalities. Despite Tsagarakis' Greek passport, he previously played for the French U20 national team and is probably not eligible to play for the Greek team.

   #5. Experienced Alexey Savrasenko (215-C-79, currently plays in Russia), who plays in the Russian PBL could not help Lokomotiv (4-5) to beat Khimky (6-2). Savrasenko cannot count Sunday's game as one of the best ones. He recorded only 2 points in 16 minutes. Lokomotiv lost 100-104 on the road to the second-ranked Khimky. This year Savrasenko's total stats are: 1.3ppg and 1.1rpg in the seven games. He also holds two passports: Greek and Russian.

   #6. Nick Paulos (201-G/F-91, currently plays college basketball in the States) was not able to help the NC-Greensboro in their game against the Univ. of N.Carolina-Wilmington in the NCAA. Paulos scored 8 points. His team was defeated 87-73. Paulos' total stats this season are: 1.3ppg and 1.1rpg. He is a naturalized American. Apparently Paulos has never played in Greece.

   #7. Corey Petros (208-F/C-93, currently studies in the States), who plays in the NCAA was not able to secure a victory for the Oakland in their last game. Despite his good performance the Oakland lost 71-76 in Morgantown, WV to the West Virginia University. Petros scored 14 points and grabbed 8 rebounds in 38 minutes. This year Petros' total stats are: 1.3ppg and 1.1rpg in the seven games. He is a naturalized American. Apparently Petros has never played in Greece.

   #8. Nicholas Livas (198-G-87, college: Ill.-Springfield, currently plays in Germany) contributed to an easy victory against one of league's weakest teams Kirchheim Knights 89-74 in the German ProA (second division) last Saturday. He scored 8 points. Livas belongs to league's best rebounders and is ranked #6. His total stats this season are: 10.0ppg, 7.7rpg, 2.7apg and 1.1spg. Livas is a naturalized American. Apparently he has never played in Greece.

   #9. Dan Mavraides (193-G-88, college: Princeton, currently plays in Italy) couldn't help one of league's weakest teams Juvecaserta in their game against Umana Venezia in the Italian SerieA. Mavraides scored only 4 points in 22 minutes. His team lost in an overtime 77-83. This year his total stats are: 8.0ppg, 2.0rpg and 2.0spg in the two games. Mavraides is a naturalized American. He used to play for Aris Thessaloniki in Greek league.

   #10. Angelos Tsamis (192-G-81, currently plays in France) couldn't help Limoges CSP Elite in their game against Chalon/Saor in the French ProA. Tsamis scored only 4 points and added 3 passes. His team was defeated 83-77. He has averaged so far 6.5ppg, 2.2rpg and 3.0apg.

AS Karditsas (B) agreed terms with 23-year old point guard Thomas Amparas (190-94) from Koropi. Quite impressive season as he was named to Eurobasket.com All-Greek B League Honorable Mention.

Aries Trikalla BC (A1) inked American swingman Lamond Murray Jr. (196-91kg). Murray Jr. just graduated from Pepperdine (NCAA). He has played there for the last four years. In 30 games he averaged impressive 21.3ppg, 5.6rpg, 1.2apg and 1.2spg last season. A very good year in his career as he was selected to All-WCC 1st Team. Hyeres-Toulon Var Basket (ProA) added to their roster 29-year old American forward Robert Arnold (198-85kg-88, college: Boise State, agency: SportsVision-Service).
