Here is the weekly review of the top performing Greek players, who play currently abroad.

   #1. This week's number one is an international swingman Kostas Vasiliadis (200-84, agency: FCM, currently plays in Spain), who plays in the Spanish ACB. He could not help Gescrap BB (10-6) in their last game. Despite Vasiliadis' very good performance Gescrap BB was edged in an overtime 113-111 on the road by the higher-ranked (#3) Valencia Basket. He was the top scorer with 27 points (made all of his eleven free throws !!!) in 38 minutes on the court. Vasiliadis is currently sixth on the list of top scorers with 14.9ppg. He also averaged so far 3.1rpg, 2.1apg, 1.1spg, 2FGP: 54.7%, 3FGP: 38.0% and FT: 90.5%(57-63) in the 16 games he played so far. Vasiliadis is currently a member of the Greek senior national team.

Loukas Mavrokefalidis

   #2. Second place goes to former international center Loukas Mavrokefalidis (207-84, currently plays in Eurocup), who plays in Russia. He was not able to help Spartak St.Petersburg (0-1) in their last game on Wednesday. Despite Mavrokefalidis' very good performance the fourth-placed Spartak St.Petersburg was defeated 84-70 in Kuban by the leading Lokomotiv in the group K of Eurocup. He was the top scorer with 20 points. Mavrokefalidis also added 9 rebounds. Mavrokefalidis has relatively good stats this season: 13.7ppg, 5.9rpg, 1.7apg, 2FGP: 52.0% and FT: 69.2%. He played for the Greek national team in 2011.

   #3. The Greek player who performed third best last week abroad was former international center Kostas Koufos (213-89, college: Ohio St., currently plays in NBA), who plays in the NBA. Koufos was not able to secure a victory for the Denver Nuggets (21-16) in their last game. Despite his very good performance the Denver Nuggets lost 97-101 in Minnesota to the Timberwolves. Koufos was the top scorer with 16 points. He also added 7 rebounds and 2 blocks in 26 minutes. This year Koufos has relatively solid stats: 7.5ppg, 6.4rpg, 1.7bpg, 2FGP: 58.6%(123-210) and FT: 55.6% in the 36 games. He is a naturalized American. Koufos played for the Greek national team two years ago. Strangely he has never played in Greece.

Nick Calathes

   #4. Point guard Nick Calathes (198-89, college: Florida, currently plays in VTB United League), who plays in Russia couldn't help Lokomotiv (6-4) in their last game. Despite Calathes' very good performance Lokomotiv (#4) lost 81-89 in Kaunas to the leading Zalgiris in the group B of VTB United League. He was the second best scorer with 17 points. Calathes also added 9 assists and 3 steals in 37 minutes. It's Calathes' first season with the team. Calathes belongs to league's top scorers (ranked #4) and also on the list of best passers (second place). He has individually a very good year with high stats. Calathes averages: 15.2ppg, 4.1rpg, 6.1apg and 1.8spg in the 10 games. He is a naturalized American. Calathes is also Greek national team player. He used to play for 3-year contract with Panathinaikos Athens in Greek league.

Ian Vougioukas

   #5. International power forward Ian Vougioukas (212-85, college: St.Louis, currently plays in Eurocup) was the major contributor in an Unics Kazan's victory against the fourth-ranked Galatasaray (0-1) 80-74 in the Eurocup on Wednesday night. Vougioukas recorded 17 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Unics Kazan (1-0) is placed first in group L. This season Vougioukas has very high stats. He averages: 16.6ppg, 6.1rpg and 1.6apg. Vougioukas plays currently for the Greek national team.

   #6. Guard Nikolaos Zisis (197-83, currently plays in Spain) is a teammate of previously mentioned Kostas Vasiliadis and both played together in the last Spanish ACB game. Zisis, who plays in the Spanish ACB couldn't help Gescrap BB (10-6) in their last game. Despite his good performance Gescrap BB was edged in an overtime 113-111 in Valencia by the higher-ranked (#3) Basket. Zisis recorded 11 points and added 4 passes in 30 minutes. This year Zisis' overall stats are: 7.5ppg, 2.0rpg and 3.8apg in the 16 games. He is an international player who is currently on the senior Greek National Team roster.

   #7. International power forward Kostas Kaimakoglou (206-83, currently plays in VTB United League) is a teammate of previously mentioned Ian Vougioukas. But that was another game of his team in VTB United League which we would like to mention. Kaimakoglou led his Russian team Unics Kazan to a victory against the seventh-ranked BC Donetsk (4-6) 74-63. He recorded 15 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Unics Kazan (8-2) is placed first in group A. It was his team's fifth consecutive victory in a row. Kaimakoglou has reliable stats this season: 14.4ppg, 6.3rpg, 1.9apg and 1.8spg. He is also Greek national team player.

   #8. An experienced point guard Theodoros Papaloukas (200-77, also represented by FCM, currently plays in VTB United League) managed to help CSKA Moscow in a victory against the ninth-ranked Neptunas (1-9) crushing them 79-57 in the VTB United League on Sunday night. Papaloukas recorded only 1 points and added 3 passes in 12 minutes. It was his first game for CSKA Moscow this season. His team is placed second in group B. It was his team's sixth consecutive victory in a row. Papaloukas used to play for the Greek national team back in 2008.

   #9. Former international forward Christos Tapoutos (203-82, currently plays in Turkey) couldn't help Olin Edirne (3-11) in their game against Tofas (6-8) in the Turkish TBL. Despite his very good performance in Saturday night's game He was the second best scorer with 19 points. Tapoutos also added 6 rebounds. Tapoutos' total stats this season are: 9.7ppg and 4.6rpg. He used to play for the Greek national team eight years ago.

   #10. Forward Nikos Barlos (203-79, currently plays in Italy) contributed to an easy victory against the league leader Sigma Barcellona (10-4) crushing them 101-69 in the Italian Lega2 (second division) last Sunday. Barlos scored 19 points and grabbed 8 rebounds in 26 minutes. Centrale del Latte Brescia (7-6) is placed sixth in the Lega2. Barlos' stats this year are: 11.8ppg, 5.8rpg, 1.1apg and 1.8spg in the 13 games. He is a former international player as eight years ago he still played for the Greek senior national team.

   #11. Former University international center Giorgos Galiotos (213-86, agency: Interperformances, currently plays in Bulgaria) couldn't help Euroins Cherno More in their game against Beroe in the Bulgarian NBL. Despite his very good performance on Sunday night Galiotos was the second best scorer with 14 points. He also added 9 rebounds and dished 4 assists. Galiotos belongs to league's best rebounders and is ranked #5. His total stats this season are: 9.0ppg and 8.4rpg. Galiotos used to play for the Greek university national team four years ago.

   #12. Former U20 international small forward Dusan Sakota (209-86, agency: Beo Basket, currently plays in Italy) contributed to a Cimberio Varese's victory against the league outsider VL Pesaro 82-69 in the Italian SerieA on Sunday night. Sakota scored only 3 points in 14 minutes. This year Sakota's total stats are: 6.3ppg and 2.5rpg in the 13 games. He used to play for the Greek U20 national team back in 2006.

   #13. Former U20 international center Stavros Toutziarakis (210-87, another player represented by FCM, currently plays in Sweden) helped Solna Vikings win their game against the closely-ranked LF Basket 84-75 in the Swedish Basketligan in Tuesday night's game. Toutziarakis scored 11 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in a mere 19 minutes. Toutziarakis is ranked sixth on the list of the best rebounders in the league with 8.0rpg. He also averaged so far 12.4ppg and 1.3apg in the 20 games. Toutziarakis used to play for the Greek U20 national team six years ago.

   #14. Former U18 international forward Fotios Lampropoulos (206-83, currently plays in Spain) helped CB Canarias win their game against the closely-ranked UCAM Murcia 80-68 in the Spanish ACB on Saturday night. Lampropoulos recorded 6 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 23 minutes. He has averaged so far 6.7ppg, 3.3rpg and 1.1apg in the 16 games. Lampropoulos used to play for the Greek U18 national team back in 2003.

   #15. International forward Antonis Fotsis (209-81, currently plays in Italy) couldn't help Armani Milano in their game against Cantu in the Italian SerieA. He cannot count Sunday's game as one of the best ones. Fotsis scored only 3 points in 13 minutes. His team lost 76-84. He has averaged so far 7.4ppg and 3.8rpg in the 14 games. Fotsis is also in the roster of the Greek national team.


The list of other players, who all have Greek passport but never been selected to any of Greek national teams:

   #1. Pat Calathes (208-G/F-85, college: St.Joseph's, currently plays in Israel), who plays in the Israeli Winner League could not help Maccabi Haifa (8-4) in their last game on Monday. Despite Calathes' very good performance Maccabi Haifa was defeated 89-84 on the road by the much lower-ranked Hapoel Holon (#10). He recorded a double-double by scoring 21 points and getting 13 rebounds. It's Calathes' first season with the team. Calathes is ranked third on the list of the best rebounders in the league. He has very reliable stats this season: 14.8ppg, 10.0rpg and 2.6apg. Calathes is a naturalized American. He used to play for Costa Cafe Marousi in Greek league.

   #2. Corey Petros (208-F/C-93, currently plays college basketball in the States) led Oakland to a victory against the University of Nebraska at Omaha (1-5) 91-79 in the NCAA in Thursday night's game. He scored 16 points and grabbed 8 rebounds in 28 minutes. The Oakland University has 2-1 conference record this season. This year Petros' total stats are: 9.0ppg and 8.4rpg in the 10 games he played so far. He is a naturalized American. Apparently Petros has never played in Greece.

   #3. Triantafillos Tzakopoulos (187-G-85, currently plays in Germany), who plays in the German ProA (second division) was not able to help Duesseldorf Baskets (10-6) in their last game on Saturday. Despite his very good performance Duesseldorf Baskets was badly defeated 99-79 in Vechta by the second-ranked SC Rasta. Tzakopoulos was the top scorer with 19 points. Tzakopoulos' total stats this season are: 6.6ppg, 1.4rpg and 3.4apg. He has a dual citizenship: Greek and Australian.

   #4. Nicholas Livas (198-G-87, college: Ill.-Springfield, currently plays in Germany) contributed to a 3-point BG Goettingen's victory against the eighth-ranked Science City Jena (8-8) 88-85 in the German ProA (second division) in Saturday night's game. Livas recorded 12 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists. BG Goettingen (13-3) is placed first in the ProA. It was his team's sixth consecutive victory in a row. Livas is ranked seventh on the list of the best rebounders in the league. He has very reliable stats this season: 10.2ppg, 7.6rpg and 3.0apg. Livas is a naturalized American. Apparently he has never played in Greece.

   #5. Dan Mavraides (193-G-88, college: Princeton, currently plays in Italy) contributed to Juvecaserta's surprising victory against the second-ranked Banco di Sardegna Sassari (11-3) 88-81 in the Italian SerieA last Sunday. Mavraides scored 9 points in 16 minutes. JuveCaserta (7-7) is placed ninth in the SerieA. Mavraides has averaged so far 9.8ppg and 1.8rpg in the four games. He is a naturalized American. Mavraides used to play for Aris Thessaloniki in Greek league.

   #6. Alex Hill (196-G-90, college: Cornell, currently plays in Canada), who plays in the Canadian university league CIS was not able to secure a victory for the University of Toronto (5-3) in their last game on Saturday. Despite his very good performance the University of Toronto (#3) was defeated 82-74 in Kingston, ON by the Golden Gaels. Hill was the top scorer with 23 points. Hill is currently fifth on the league's list of top scorers. He has individually a very good season with high stats. Hill averages: 20.7ppg, 5.8rpg, 2.6apg and 1.2spg. He is another player who holds two passports: Greek and Canadian.

   #7. Giannis Demertzis (194-PG-83, currently plays in Cyprus) managed to help Keravnos Strovolou to win against the league outsider Omonia 76-58 in the Cypriot Division A last Wednesday. He scored only 3 points, had 8 rebounds and dished 6 assists. Demertzis is ranked seventh on the list of the best passers in the league. He has averaged so far 4.5ppg, 3.6rpg, 3.5apg and 1.3spg.

   #8. Christian Koutras (189-G-88, college: Cuesta JC, currently plays in Sweden) was the major contributor in Akropol's victory against the third-ranked Taby Basket 87-86 in the Swedish Basketettan (second division) in Saturday night's game. He recorded 20 points, 4 rebounds, 9 assists and 3 steals. This season Koutras has very high stats. He averages: 17.9ppg, 6.6rpg, 10.1apg and 2.7spg. Koutras has both Greek and Swedish nationalities. Despite his Greek passport, Koutras previously played for the Swedish U20 national team and is probably not eligible to play for the Greek team.

   #9. Vassilis Kounas (194-G-84, currently plays in Cyprus), who plays in the Cypriot Division A couldn't help one of league's weakest teams ENAD (3-5) in their last game on Wednesday. Despite his very good performance ENAD was badly defeated 77-61 at home by the higher-ranked AEK (#3). Kounas was the top scorer with 15 points. He also added 5 passes. Kounas averaged so far 10.4ppg, 1.8rpg and 2.8apg. He also holds two passports: Greek and Cypriot.

   #10. Mannos Nakos (179-PG-88, currently plays in Sweden) couldn't help Uppsala Basket in their game against Norrkoping Dolphins in the Swedish Basketligan. Nakos scored 5 points in 20 minutes. His team lost 65-80. He has averaged so far 6.4ppg and 1.8apg in the 20 games. Nakos has dual citizenship: Greek and Swedish.

CEZ Basketball Nymburk (NBL) agreed terms with 27-year old American power forward Kenny Hall (206-104kg-90, college: Tennessee). He started the season at ASA Koroivos Amaliadas in Greek A1 league.
