A1 Round 13: Kronos AD beats higher ranked PAOK - Jan 20, 2013

The game with biggest difference of round 13 in A1 was host Kronos AD's (6-7) victory at home over 4th placed PAOK (9-4) 58-53 on Saturday evening. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But PAOK won third quarter 13-12. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. The former international power forward Nena Nikolaidou (190-79) fired 13 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists for the winners. American guard Jasmine Smith (172, college: St.Mary's, CA) chipped in 14 points. American center Caila Desroches (193, college: Chicago St.) produced a double-double by scoring 16 points and 10 rebounds for lost side. Kronos AD moved-up to fifth place, which they share with Ikaros Kalitheas and Aris. PAOK at the other side keeps the fourth position with four games lost. Kronos AD is looking forward to face bottom-ranked GAC Eunikos (#12) in Liosa in the next round and are hoping to win another game. PAOK will play at home against the league's second-placed Athinaikos (#2) in Athens and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Leader Panathinaikos delivered the twelfth victory. This time they beat bottom-ranked GAC Eunikos (0-13) 62-45 in Liosa. Worth to mention a great performance of international guard Dimitra Kalentzou (174-78) who helped to win the game recording 17 points and 6 rebounds. Aristea Maglara contributed with 7 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners. Panathinaikos' coach used entire bench which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Nikolina Ioannidou (174-94) answered with 12 points for GAC Eunikos. Panathinaikos (12-1) have an impressive series of seven victories in a row. They maintain first place, which they share with Athinaikos and AO Ellinikou. GAC Eunikos at the other side still closes the standings with 13 games lost. Panathinaikos' supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Athens to the arena Asteras.
The game in Thessaloniki was also quite interesting. 7th ranked Asteras (5-8) played at the court of eighth ranked Aris (6-7). Aris defeated Asteras 73-61 on Sunday. Roula Mouli stepped up with a double-double by scoring 22 points and 13 rebounds for the winners. At the losing side Theodora Panteli responded with a double-double by scoring 15 points and 16 rebounds. Both coaches used bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Aris moved-up to fifth place, which they share with Ikaros Kalitheas and Kronos AD. Loser Asteras dropped to the eighth position with eight games lost. They share it with Terpsithea. Aris will meet Olympiakos (#10) in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Asteras' supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Athens Panathinaikos.
We should mention about the upset which took place in Glyfadas, where higher ranked Terpsithea (5-8) lost at home to eleventh ranked Panionios (2-11) 60-68. Zafiria Giabani nailed a double-double by scoring 20 points and 14 rebounds for the winning side. Panionios maintains eleventh place with 2-11 record. Newly promoted Terpsithea dropped to the eighth position with eight games lost. Panionios' next round opponent will be higher ranked AO Ellinikou (#3) at home and it will be quite challenging to get another victory.

The victory was the third consecutive win for AO Ellinikou. They keep a position of league leader, which they share with Panathinaikos and Athinaikos. Olympiakos lost their fourth game in a row. Olympiakos at the other side, also newcomer in the league, keeps the tenth place with ten games lost. AO Ellinikou will face Panionios (#11) in Athens in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Olympiakos will play at home against Aris in Thessaloniki.

In the last game of round 13 Ikaros Kalitheas was defeated by Athinaikos in Athens 70-53.


Athinaikos - Ikaros Kalitheas 70-53

There was no surprise in Athens where 5th ranked Ikaros Kalitheas (6-7) was defeated by third ranked Athinaikos (12-1) 70-53 on Sunday. Athinaikos dominated on the defensive end, holding Ikaros Kalitheas to just 6 points in fourth quarter. Athinaikos had a 28-17 advantage in offensive rebounds. The former international power forward Afroditi Kosma (187-83) fired a double-double by scoring 20 points and 14 rebounds for the winners. Guard Zoi Kechagia (170-79) chipped in 14 points. Athinaikos' coach used an eleven-player rotation saving starting five for next games. American center Jasmine Erving (187-90, college: CS Northridge) produced a double-double by scoring 19 points and 10 rebounds and guard Roula Kalogirou (172-81) added 5 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists respectively for lost side. The victory was the fifth consecutive win for Athinaikos. Defending champion keeps a position of league leader, which they share with Panathinaikos and AO Ellinikou. Loser Ikaros Kalitheas keeps the fifth place with seven games lost. Athinaikos will face PAOK (#4) in Thessaloniki in the next round. Ikaros Kalitheas will play at home against Terpsithea in Glyfadas.

Experienced Chinasa-Cynthia Ezedja (188-F/C) put on an amazing game in the last round for Panathinaikos and that's her to receive a Eurobasket.com Player of the Week award for round 22.
