We bring you last week's top performances from Greeks who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.

   #1. This week's number one is an international point guard Nick Calathes (198-89, college: Florida, currently plays in Russia). He led Lokomotiv to a victory over the seventh-ranked Triumph Lyubertsy (4-7) 89-78 in the Russian PBL in Sunday night's game. Calathes was MVP of the game. He recorded 19 points, 8 rebounds, 8 assists and 4 steals in 32 minutes on the court. Lokomotiv Kuban (7-5) is placed third in the PBL. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. It's Calathes' first season with the team. Calathes is currently fifth on the list of best passers with 3.9apg. He also averaged so far 13.4ppg, 5.0rpg, 2FGP: 56.5%(39-69), 3FGP: 38.9% and FT: 51.2% in the nine games he played so far. Calathes is a naturalized American. He is currently a member of the Greek senior national team. Calathes used to play for 3-year contract with Panathinaikos Athens in Greek league.

   #2. Second place goes to an international forward Antonis Fotsis (209-81, currently plays in Italy). He was the main contributor in a Armani Milano's victory against the closely-ranked Lottomatica Roma (12-7) 79-66 in the Italian SerieA last Sunday. Fotsis was the best player in that game. He recorded 21 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. EA7 Emporio Armani Milano (12-7) is placed fifth in the SerieA. It was his team's fifth consecutive victory in a row. This season Fotsis averages: 8.0ppg, 4.2rpg, 2FGP: 55.8%(24-43), 3FGP: 47.8%(32-67) and FT: 66.7%. He is in the roster of the Greek senior national team.

   #3. The Greek player who performed third best last week abroad was former international center Loukas Mavrokefalidis (207-84, currently plays in Eurocup), who plays in Russia. Mavrokefalidis could not help Spartak St.Petersburg (3-3) in their last game. Despite his very good performance the second-placed Spartak St.Petersburg was edged 68-66 on the road by the lower-ranked (#4) Cajasol in the group K of Eurocup. Mavrokefalidis was the top scorer with 19 points. He also added 5 rebounds in 30 minutes. The Top 16 already ended in the Eurocup. Mavrokefalidis has relatively good stats this year: 13.8ppg, 5.4rpg, 1.6apg, 2FGP: 53.0%, 3FGP: 44.4% and FT: 76.3% in the 12 games. He played for the Greek national team two years ago.

Guard Nikolaos Zisis (197-83, currently plays in Spain) was the major contributor in a Gescrap BB's victory against the ninth-ranked FIATC Joventut (10-11) 81-70 in the Spanish ACB in Sunday night's game. Zisis scored 14 points and added 6 assists. Gescrap Bizkaia Bilbao Basket (13-8) is placed fourth in the ACB. Zisis' overall stats this season are: 7.7ppg, 1.8rpg and 3.5apg. He is also Greek national team player.

   #5. International swingman Kostas Vasiliadis (200-84, agency: FCM, currently plays in Eurocup) is a teammate of previously mentioned Nikolaos Zisis. But that was another game of his team in Eurocup which we would like to mention. Vasiliadis contributed to a Gescrap BB's victory against the fourth-ranked CEZ Nymburk (1-5) 83-69. He scored 17 points (was perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line) in 27 minutes. Gescrap Bizkaia Bilbao Basket (4-2) is placed first in group J. It was his team's fourth consecutive victory in a row. This year Vasiliadis has relatively solid stats: 14.3ppg, 3.2rpg, 1.6apg and 1.2spg in the 10 games. He plays currently for the Greek national team.

   #6. Center Kostas Koufos (213-89, college: Ohio St., currently plays in NBA) was not able to help the Denver Nuggets (34-21) in their game against the Toronto Raptors (22-33) in the NBA. Koufos scored 8 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. The Denver Nuggets were edged 109-108 in Toronto by the Raptors. It was Nuggets' third consecutive loss in a row. Koufos has reliable stats this season: 8.0ppg, 6.5rpg and 1.4bpg. He is a naturalized American. Koufos is a former international player as he played for the Greek senior team two years ago. Strangely he has never played in Greece.

International power forward Ian Vougioukas (212-85, college: St.Louis, currently plays in Eurocup) helped his Russian team Unics Kazan edge the closely-ranked ratiopharm Ulm (3-3) 79-77 in the Eurocup in Tuesday night's game. Vougioukas scored 12 points and grabbed 9 rebounds in a mere 19 minutes. It was the game of the round between two top 2 ranked teams in group L. Unics Kazan (4-2) is placed first. The Top 16 already ended in the Eurocup. Vougioukas' stats this year are: 14.0ppg, 6.2rpg and 1.5apg in the 11 games. He is also Greek national team player.

Small forward Dusan Sakota (209-86, agency: Beo Basket, currently plays in Italy) helped Cimberio Varese win their game against the 11th-ranked SAIE3 BO (7-12) 78-61 in the Italian SerieA on Sunday night. Sakota recorded 11 points in 20 minutes. Cimberio Varese (16-3) is placed first in the SerieA. This year Sakota's overall stats are: 6.7ppg and 2.4rpg in the 18 games. He used to play for the Greek U20 national team back in 2006.

However that was another game of his team in Eurocup which brought him to that list. Kaimakoglou helped his Russian team Unics Kazan win their game against the third-ranked Galatasaray (3-3) 64-57. He scored 10 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Unics Kazan (4-2) is placed first in group L. Kaimakoglou averaged so far 12.1ppg, 5.2rpg and 2.8apg. He is also in the roster of the Greek national team.

   #10. Forward Christos Tapoutos (203-82, currently plays in Turkey) helped Olin Edirne win their game against the league outsider Hacettepe (3-15) 70-62 in the Turkish TBL last Saturday. Tapoutos was the top player that evening. He scored 19 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in 33 minutes. Olin Edirne Basketball (4-14) is placed 14th in the TBL. They ended the series of eight consecutive loses. Tapoutos averaged so far 10.8ppg and 4.3rpg in the 15 games. He is a former international player as eight years ago he still played for the Greek senior national team.

   #11. Former international power forward Dimitris Haritopoulos (205-83, agency: Interperformances, currently plays in Bulgaria) helped Lukoil Academik win their game against the closely-ranked Balkan 82-71 in the Bulgarian NBL on Saturday night. Haritopoulos scored 11 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. It was his first game for Lukoil Academik this season. Haritopoulos used to play for the Greek national team eight years ago.

   #12. Former U20 international center Stavros Toutziarakis (210-87, also represented by FCM, currently plays in Sweden) helped Solna Vikings win their game against the league outsider Eco Orebro 81-67 in the Swedish Basketligan in Friday night's game. He was the top player that evening. Toutziarakis recorded 19 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 23 minutes. Toutziarakis averaged so far 12.6ppg, 7.5rpg and 1.2apg in the 28 games. He used to play for the Greek U20 national team back in 2007.

   #13. An experienced former international forward Nikos Barlos (203-79, currently plays in Italy), who plays in the Italian Lega2 (second division) was not able to secure a victory for one of league's weakest teams C.de Latte BRE (11-7) in their last game. Despite his very good performance C.de Latte BRE lost 87-91 in Casale to the higher-ranked (#3) Novipiu. Barlos was the second best scorer with 16 points. He also added 6 rebounds (made all of his six free throws) in 28 minutes. Barlos averaged so far 11.3ppg, 5.4rpg and 1.8spg in the 17 games. He used to play for the Greek national team eight years ago.

   #14. Former University international center Giorgos Galiotos (213-86, another player represented by Interperformances, currently plays in Bulgaria) helped Euroins Cherno More win their game against the league outsider U20 crushing them 84-55 in the Bulgarian NBL in Friday night's game. Galiotos recorded a double-double by scoring 12 points and getting 18 rebounds. He also added 4 blocks. Galiotos is currently second on the list of best rebounders. His total stats this season are: 9.2ppg and 9.5rpg. Galiotos used to play for the Greek university national team back in 2009.

   #15. U18 international swingman Ioannis Papapetrou (203-94, currently plays college basketball in the States) helped Texas win their n overtime game against the Iowa State University 89-86 in the NCAA last Wednesday. He scored 14 points and grabbed 8 rebounds in 43 minutes. This year Papapetrou's total stats are: 9.2ppg and 9.5rpg in the 13 games. He is also in the roster of the Greek U18 national team.


The list of other players, who all have Greek passport but never been selected to any of Greek national teams:

   #1. Pat Calathes (208-G/F-85, college: St.Joseph's, currently plays in Israel) led Maccabi Haifa to a victory against the closely-ranked GreenTops Netanya (9-8) 79-68 in the Israeli Winner League last Monday. Calathes recorded a double-double by scoring 11 points and getting 13 rebounds. He also added 4 assists and 2 blocks. Maccabi Bazan Haifa (10-7) is placed fourth in the Winner League. Calathes is currently sixth on the list of best rebounders. He has very reliable stats this season: 14.6ppg, 9.6rpg and 2.4apg. Calathes is a naturalized American. He used to play for Costa Cafe Marousi in Greek league.

   #2. Corey Petros (208-F/C-93, currently plays college basketball in the States) contributed to a 1-point Oakland's victory against the University of South Dakota (4-10) 76-75 in the NCAA last Thursday. Petros recorded a double-double by scoring 17 points and getting 13 rebounds. He also added 3 assists. The Oakland University has a solid 10-4 conference record this season. It was his team's seventh consecutive victory in a row. There are only two games left until the end of the NCAA Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. Petros averaged so far 12.6ppg, 7.5rpg and 1.2apg. He is a naturalized American. Apparently Petros has never played in Greece.

   #3. Angelo Tsagarakis (190-G-84, currently plays in France) contributed to Chalons-Reims' victory against the closely-ranked ALM Evreux (17-6) 81-74 in the French ProB (second division) in Tuesday night's game. Tsagarakis scored 13 points and added 6 assists in 28 minutes. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Chalons-Reims (15-8) is placed fourth in the ProB. It was his team's first victory after three consecutive loses. Tsagarakis averaged so far 13.5ppg, 2.0rpg and 1.6apg in the 23 games he played so far. He has a dual citizenship: Greek and French. Despite Tsagarakis' Greek passport, he previously played for the French U20 national team and is probably not eligible to play for the Greek team.

   #4. Peter Pappageorge (183-G, currently studies in the States) contributed to an easy victory against the California State University, Fullerton (5-8) crushing them 85-65 in the NCAA last Wednesday. He scored 11 points in 21 minutes. Uppsala Basket (21-8) is placed second in the Basketligan. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. There are only four games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be important. Nakos has been at the team for four years. Nakos has averaged so far 6.6ppg and 1.6apg in the 28 games. He is another player who holds two passports: Greek and Swedish.

   #6. Sten-Timmu Sokk (181-PG-89, currently plays in Georgia) contributed to an easy victory against the ninth-ranked Batumi crushing them 105-66 in the Georgian Superleague in Friday night's game. Sokk scored 8 points, made 3 passes and 3 steals. He is ranked fourth on the list of the best passers in the league. Sokk has averaged so far 9.5ppg, 3.1rpg, 5.9apg and 1.2spg. He has both Greek and Estonian nationalities.

   #7. Nick Paulos (201-G/F-91, is currently at the American university), who plays in the NCAA could not help the NC-Greensboro (5-8) in their last game on Thursday. Despite Paulos' very good performance the NC-Greensboro (#6) was edged 70-68 at home by the Western Carolina University. He scored 16 points. Paulos has averaged so far 9.5ppg, 3.1rpg, 5.9apg and 1.2spg. He is a naturalized American. Apparently Paulos has never played in Greece.

   #8. Giannis Demertzis (194-PG-83, currently plays in Cyprus) contributed to Keravnos' victory against the league outsider Omonia 89-84 in the Cypriot Division A in Friday night's game. He scored 8 points in 21 minutes. Demertzis is currently sixth on the league's list of best passers with 3.4apg. He also averaged so far 5.5ppg, 3.1rpg and 1.4spg in the 16 games.

   #9. Experienced Alexey Savrasenko (215-C-79, currently plays in Eurocup) was not able to help Lokomotiv in their game against Stelmet ZG in the Eurocup. Savrasenko cannot count Wednesday's game as one of the best ones. He scored only 2 points. His team was defeated 94-88. Savrasenko has averaged so far 1.6ppg and 2.0rpg. He also holds two passports: Greek and Russian.

   #10. Alex Hill (196-G-90, college: Cornell, currently plays in Canada) was the major contributor in an University of Toronto's victory against the Rams 67-61 in a derby game in the Canadian university league CIS in Friday night's game. Hill recorded 15 points and added 3 passes. He has individually a very good season with high stats. Hill averages: 18.1ppg, 4.6rpg, 2.6apg and 1.3spg. He has dual citizenship: Greek and Canadian.

Bad news for AEK and Michael Dixon. The talented American point guard of AEK BC who performs pretty well this season was involved in a fatal car accident in Athens on Friday morning, which caused the death of a waste collector.It currently seems that Dixon violated a STOP road sign and crushed with an other vehicle which was driven by a 47-year-old woman the death of the 64 year-old man. AE Doxa Lefkadas (A1) signed 32-year old American power forward Kevin Johnson (201-84, college: Humboldt State). He has played for the last two seasons at Polfarmex Kutno in Polish TBL league. Eric Buckner (208-C/F-90, college: Georgia St., agency: David Lee Services) was injured in the game of Aris for the basketball champions league against AS Monaco Basket (29/11). Today he underwent and MRI that confirmed what the doctors were afraid of. The American player suffered a bone edema in the ankle and he is expected to be back to the courts after three months.
