Hello everyone! Thank you for coming to eurobasket.com to check out my blog about my travels and basketball here in europe. This is my first blog and im excited to share my stories on my life and basketball with everyone. I am currently playing in Athens, Greece on a team named Illysiakos. Ill come back to my team here but I first want to give you a breif history on previous experiences in Europe and how my career has brought me here. After leaving University of Illinois where I had the best 4 years of my life! I went undrafted in the 2007 NBA draft but landed a spot on the Dallas Mavericks summer league. Unable to travel to Vegas due to fractures in my knee I signed the first contract offered to me to be a professional basketball player. Multu Selcuk in Konya, Turkey was the club and believe me thats where the craziest off the court situations happened. Had a great season there which moved me to what is considered the best league in Euorpe (Spain) for Cajsol in Sevilla. We struggled as a team there so we decided to part ways and from there I went to Ventspils, Latvia (BK Ventspils) where I came in and everything just clicked and I had a great end to what started out to be a frustrating season and won a championship. Winning comes first to me no matter what situation im in and I believe every true athlete feels this way. Have won a couple championships from high school to college and it felt amazing to win one in a differnt country. Got a new agent who wanted me to pursue the NBA more and I got invited to the Knicks summerleague played well enough there to get asked to camp but didnt quit finish the job. Once released from the Knicks I signed to play in what is also a great league in Europe (Greece). Alright, now that the boring history less is over. This is my 3rd year playing in Europe so I guess im a vet to the game now since ive lived in what is currently my 4th country. Hooping here compared to at home is a complete differnt mentality to approaching the game. Yes, its still basketball the rims still sit at 10ft but everything from the style of play to the fans is differnt and sometimes takes an adjustment period. Now I can only speak for the countries ive played in but the fans, especially in turkey and greece are way more riot prone. Not in a bad way but the fans associate themselves with the team and its a matter of pride. Die Hard fans especially are willing to fight for what they believe in. Nothing wrong with that in my book just dont throw any chairs at me please. I actually had a situation here in Greece, well more than one but this was the biggest one. Anyway we are playing AEK and our fans got into it. So we come out at half time blechers are basically empty got a couple of bloody faced men in our training room women and men screaming and shouting is all you can hear. Crazy right?! It fuels you to fight for your team when your fans are literally fighting because of how much they believe in you. And im not even on one of the top teams here so it was maybe a couple 100 people instead of what could potenitially be 1,000s of people which you see on the news in sports a lot here. Along with the fans playing the game, adjusting to the no offensive goaltending, the slower style, differnt philosphies, language barriers all took patience and love of the game to get comfortable with. My current head coach doesnt speak any english which is a first for me even over here but ive adjusted to it with the best of my ability. Our club was in A2 last year here in Greece and the main priority for the team is to remain in the top division A1. It has been a fun yet challenging year for me trying to help the team to accomplish this goal while dealing with younger players who've never played against top competition or even with american players before, coach who doesnt speak english, and we've also had serious injuries to key players that has made it difficult as well. All that being said its has taught me better leadership skills and im a people person so I always enjoy my teammates and getting to know them on and off the court for every country ive played in. We have 4 games left and the bottom 2 teams drop we are 1/2 game back so im excited to finish the season and hopefully help keep this club remain in the top division. Im currently 15th in the league for scoring 13.5ppg and 5th for rebs at 7 rbs. Individual stats dont matter as much to me without winning. However given the goals of the team im on I knew the year would be tough just because of my mind frame of wanting to win every game but we are still in position to reach our goal which is important to me as well. Im starving and have already lost about 5kg (11lbs) since being here so I better not make it worse its already hard enough trying to keep this big dudes out the line with no 3 seconds ever being called here. Thanks for reading my first blog again I look forward to sharing my story with my fans and letting you all get to know me better. Until next week...
